  1. This looks interesting! I may need to look into this! Thanks for the post! :)
  2. My dd, just turned 11, is a chemistry kid--she loves it! This year we did Christian Kids Explore Chemistry. Next year we're doing NOEO Chem. II. We already received the NOEO Chem. products, and she says she likes the variety of books and things and can hardly wait to begin! OOOPS! I sent this up before you put up your second post. So Never mind! :)
  3. We used the Old Testament pack from http://www.timelinesetc.com/ It starts in the Garden of Eden I think and moves on from there. We did a timeline on a hall wall with Biblical stuff on the top of the time line, and ancient history not in the Bible on the bottom of the line. Timelines, etc. has the figures to put on the timelines. It was a fascinating study, my dc and I LOVED it! the stuff is fairly inexpensive as well, which is nice!
  4. Yeah, if she doesn't need lots of review, I'd go with Singapore. If she does need some, then Saxon or Rod & Staff maths are good. Just one word of caution: My ds (now 14) was a bright little guy too (well, he still is bright, but he's not so little anymore! ). He ran through the A Beka math K and 1 in no time. By January of his K year, he was ready for more. We started him on the 2nd grade math that same year! At 5th grade level (we had done Horizons, he hit a wall, and slowed WAY down! So we had to find a program that didn't overwhelm him at the sight of it (Horizons hasd 2 huge books that scared the bejeebees out of him. He couldn't get past the size of the books)! We ended up with Life Pacs, because he they look smaller and he could get the accomplishment of finishing up each book. So, just saying that so that if this does happen to your dd, it's OK. Just work with her through it and keep moving forward as you can.
  5. I'm not sure they build on each other neccessarily. I'm going to say something different than the other two. SOTW 4 is recommended for 4th grade, so I would go ahead and do 4 next year when he's in the 4th grade. It seemed just right for my dd when she was in 4th. They do summaries and things in 4th that may be good for him. We had already spent 2 years in SOTW 1. There was so much to learn about and delve into that we couldn't help ourselves! :) Then, because dd was going into 4th grade, we went to Vol. 4. It was a good move for us, she had absolutely no problems with it. Then she was on the rotation suggested, and we did a bit more Ancient, just as a review, then went into Vol. 2. Just an experience of someone who HAS done that....
  6. Have you looked at Jensen's Grammar? I haven't used it (another R&S user here), but I've heard good reviews about it. Here's one website that has info. on it: http://www.timberdoodle.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=491
  7. Thankyou again! My dh looked through the site, discussed it with ds14, and they decided to try using LoF Geometry! Hope it works out well!
  8. Well, this is just personal opinion and what happened to us, but we didn't care for A Beka math after about 3rd grade. You may want to look at R&S math. I'm not sure what grade she's in, so it's hard to know what else to recommend. Singapore is also a good one for self-learners.
  9. Thanks for the comments, these are very helpful! I soooo want to try this for ds for Geometry! But I need to run it by dh first, since he's the math man. So do you all think this can be done fairly independently?
  10. R&S has brought us out of the Grammar doldrums to the point where my kids ENJOY it! Before it was painful for all of us! I'm sooo happy we found it and started it (just 2 years ago)! I'll probably do as some of the others have said and use it through 8th, then switch to something else.
  11. I saved that, thanks! If we drive about 3 minutes from our house, we can see the Olympics, Cascades, Mt. Baker and Mt. Ranier---We're surrounded! I LOVE it here! This will go great with what dd is doing next year for science!
  12. Geography Matters has Trail Guides to World, Bible, and US Geography. They're fun to use, and not "heavy" at all! My dd11 does them independently mostly. The lesson plans are included inside the books! You might want to check them out: http://www.geomatters.com/ I also got the Student Notebook cd.
  13. I second the TT or LoF suggestions. Those make it easier. I know you can take placement tests to see what level she tests into. This is really good advice! It really doesn't matter what others elsewhere are doing. Work with your dd on the level she is at to strengthen her skills and help her have a strong base! She AND you will be happier in the long-run that way, I'm sure! My dd is doing TT Pre-Algebra and some Singapore. It's working out well!
  14. Just saw this site recently. I haven't looked around on it yet. Not sure if it's anything you're looking for but here it is anyway: http://www.mssscrafts.com/oldtestament/commandments.htm
  15. My dd is fairly mathy. I chose the 8 because she's doing the TT Pre-Algebra now. I think the R&S 8 will be deeper than the TT Pre-Alg and I noticed it covered some other things, so I picked that. But, I've 2nd guessed myself and wonder if I should have picked 7? I guess I'll find out when I get it and see how she does. For English/Language/Grammar, we struggled with A Beka, mainly probably, because I felt they didn't have good teacher support, which I need in English. We finally settled on the R&S Grammar, and it's made a world of difference for my kids and me! I LOVE the Teacher books, they're great! But my kids both started out 2 grade levels below their actual grade to get to the place they felt comfortable going forward in. So in math my dd is a little ahead, but in English she's a little behind. I think it depends on the child's interests and abilities and the background of what they've used and how it worked, and what they learned!
  16. Thanks LaJuana! That is very helpful. I may use it for both my kids that I'm homeschooling! (I have a 16yo that is in a great private school this year. I'm also hsing my 11yo dd). I'm using another grammar that I'm very happy with as well, so was just interested in these two books.
  17. I can't find threads about this, so I thought I'd start one. Has anyone used these? I'm thinking of them for my ds14. He's sloppy with punctuation, and I'm wondering if the J Vocab is decent for SAT prep material? Thanks for any thoughts and ideas you may offer!
  18. I just bought the R&S 8th grade math for my dd11. She's doing TT Pre Algebra right now, but is not confident in her abilities (though she does very well!). So I will have her work through this book to get a broader base and gain confidence. Then probably go into Algebra 1 after that.
  19. I can see how Gail could be turned off with an experience like that! I got the NOEO Science Chem II for my dd, now 11, to do next year. I'm hoping for a way better experience! :) My dd LOVES Chemistry and asked specifically for a Chemistry program. She's looked at the books already and says she can hardly wait to get going with it! Maybe the Level II's are more in-depth and more engaing? I hope so! Oh, Ava, I just read your post. Now THAT'S what I'm hoping for! :)
  20. This is what I have planned for my dd who will be in 7th next year: Lightning Lit. Rod & Staff Eng/Grammar Art With A Purpose Finish up TT Pre Algebra, work in Rod & Staff Math 8, some review with Singapore All American History Trail Guide to US History to go along with the AA History Getty-Dubay Handwriting on her own as she wants to Sign Language and/or Spanish English From the Roots Up (1 day a week)--that is, if I ever getting around to doing this! NOEO Science--Chemistry Music: Piano Lessons. She practices 1 hour a day by her choice (I was going to have her practice 45 minutes a day). Bible--Bible Memorization, and NOT SURE YET for a base program Logic--Since I haven't done this with her yet, I'm starting her out easy with the Dandylion Series
