I am wondering how others teach punctuation?

Is it included in your grammar program? Do you teach it as it comes along?

 

I have just begun 'The Sentence Family' with my daughter & would like a formal approach to teaching punctuation, capitalisation etc.

We have a huge blackboard, so will use this the way the blogger uses the whiteboard.

 

I am still a little undecided - the out of order history sentences is throwing me a little, too.

I am a huge fan of memory work. I have just finished reading 'The Core' & adored it.

 

Having looked at the CC website, I have more questions than when I began!

Following the CC program is not an option for me, but I am very interested in the memory work (which seems to be the main thrust of CC? is that correct?)

I downloaded a PDF for the Cycle 1 flashcards (grog / history / grammar / latin / maths / science) & I am wondering how CC advocates they are taught? - are they supposed to be taught with lessons covering those topics? or does CC have kids memorise facts they will learn later in their education?

 

I am really interested in this program & I am mulling over how to implement this is my home.

We choose memorization depending on what is important to US. That's things like family names, addresses, and numbers, geography (world, country, and state), Bible (verses, books, apostles), math facts (including measurements and calendar here), and great poetry and famous quotes.

 

Goodness - we have done geography too! I usually feel like I am not doing enough, but we seem to be doing ok in the memory work dept!

 

I like your idea of quotes - something I hadn't really thought of before. That would tie in really nicely with many different subjects too.

I forgot to add that my eldest is beginning with Latin this year, so this will add to our memory work, plus we already have done a *very* small amount of French vocab.

My children enjoy memory work. So far we have memorised scriptures, poetry, maths facts, our address/phone no. birth dates etc.

 

This year I will be doing more memory work in history & science. (This is something I 'missed' on my first couple of readings of WTM :) )

 

I am considering Roman Emperors for this year.

I was surprised at the diversity of the forums when I first came across them. I was expecting a group of people who followed WTM, or used other ideas for Classical education.

From my (non existent) knowledge I was under the impression that the more well known Latin phrases were pronounced as ecclesiastic phrases.

My daughter is just embarking on the lively book of Latin. I have tried to find out which style of pronunciation is used in the UK, should she take her studies to a higher level, but have so far drawn a blank.

Is this because Latin is all written in our exam system? Or am I just not researching well enough?

What pronunciation do you use? I had planned ecclesiastic as it seems 'prettier' ;)

I am looking for a writing program for my 9 yo daughter.

The only writing she has done so far is copy work & dictation.

She has been very slow to learn how to read & does not yet read at grade level.

I am wondering where would be best to start her with writing strands? Is it best to 'begin at the beginning' with L2? or should we go to L3?

she fidgets, shows low attention, it can be hard because hse is making our day take longer & longer. I already use short lessons, I *try* to incorporate movement.

We do skills in the morning 9-12 (in which time she gets 2 or 3 15 min breaks)

from 12-1 we eat lunch whilst I read to them (this is usually ok - once she has done eating, she can colour / play quietly & she is usually engaged in the story)

mon & tues afternoon we work - monday is science - hands on. then we have poetry tea time (no problems here)

tues is geography, reading, cutting, sticking, finding places on the globe, outside activities (last week we drew a compass on the path with chalk) by this point she has made us run so late, she is fed up.

The point is she delays us so much with her faffing about

I started back to school with my 9 yo & 7 yo. I feel utterly exhausted :lol:

 

She has only been doing formal school since she was six, but that is a year. I keep our lessons quite short - 15 mins per day for copy work, spelling etc, maths takes 1/2 hour

I read to her over lunch time, which they both enjoy. 2 afternoons per week are lessons (geog & science)

lessons do not go on for ever & the science & geog involve moving about type activities.

Her attention span (I feel) is low. She exhausts me.

 

Thoughts & suggestions/ideas *PLEASE*!
