  1. Okay, my question is...how do you organize your day? What order do you do the different "boxes"? Just curious...what does YOUR schedule look like? We prefer to NOT spread it out over the course of the day (ie..back-to-back w/ snack, potty, recess, lunch break woven in :)) ONLY post your schedule if you are using this ONE guide, please. I just have my two youngest homeschooling and they are both in the same book and it probably will just confuse me if you give me a complicated schedule with 4 other kids! LOL.....even though I USED to be one of you;). Gettin' too old for that and down to my last two now....ahhh........ Thanks so much!! Blessings, Denise
  2. PLUS...plenty of extra TIME...precious TIME for exploring, reading, building, science experimenting, art, cooking, nature study, family math and family writing, games, pretend play, etc. etc. etc. I hope I am just as positive about it 8 months from now!! ;) LOL
  3. #20:lol:??.....Contact Us - bottom of page
  4. I FINALLY found it!! It was of course on one of my many rabbit trails. It was on a blog from a blog LOL! Here 'ya go.... http://jimmiescollage.com/2009/10/learning-x8-facts/ and here is the page I originally linked you to: http://mathlearnnc.sharpschool.com/c...pageId=5048438 jimmiescollage blog is really cool too:o! I REALLY like it too! Blessings, Denise :leaving:I'm goin' to bed! :tongue_smilie:WHEWWWWW....LOL!
  5. Here are some. Just google it. I loved that book as a kid!! That might be the place to start? Amazon has a couple really good literature guides, too. Hope you find what you're looking for! One more thing, I'm sure you've probably heard of the game, Worst Case Scenario? Survival game...either a board game or you can get a card game. http://www.teachervision.fen.com/life-skills/printable/46312.html http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=1487_type=Book_typeId=2343 http://ethemes.missouri.edu/themes/1622
  6. Thank you, Sara! Actually, I almost (and should have) said there are probably more positive reviews than negative. The negative ones that are out there were the ones that scared me..."certified math phobe"...away from the program. I read about: no teacher's manual, that the program went too fast without enough review to check for mastery, and that the measuring was all metrics (something of a nightmare for me in 4th grade :tongue_smilie:). I am encouraged though that the lessons are short, because I have several resources I would like to implement for my boys: hands-on math with math literature, math games, and real-life math activities that would hopefully provide that "missing" review. I also like that HOD includes enrichment activities to go with the Singapore lessons. I just think I also need a "spine" of-sorts to keep me "flowing" and on track. I tend to be a "tangent junkie" if not reigned in or better yet coralled from the very start LOL!! I have also found a website to hopefully use to periodically check for mastery. I was seriously considering Bob Jones or Math on the Level (really scared off by that one...at least for now). Bob Jones apparently takes around 30-45 minutes a day. Don't think my guys could take 30+ m. of one program...every day. Thanks again! I think I will look at Singapore a little closer now.:001_smile: Blessings, Denise
  7. Yes, I should have done that! Sorry. I will try to track it down.:001_smile:
  8. Thank you, Rosie! I will check it out. Someone else posted this one and it also looks really good. http://mathlearnnc.sharpschool.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=4507283&pageId=5048438 It looks like it might be a good "spine" to build on/add to.
  9. Is there time to add games or math literature/activities? Are certain days' lessons shorter/quicker than others? AND any other Singapore math advice. I have been fearful to try this for years because of all the negative I have read about lack of review and lack of TM, European measurement, etc. I have no idea how much these things have changed. I did see that Singapore has new versions out and Mrs. Austin (HOD) said she actually prefers the older ones. Thanks. Blessings, Denise:bigear:
  10. Prepare And Pray! and Blessed Assurance! We used P&P with my oldest two....right before Y2K :glare: Feel free to ask questions. Blessings, Denise
  11. How long would you say an average lesson takes per day? That is, if using the teacher manual and program basically as it is set up? :001_smile:Thanks so much! Blessings, Denise
  12. Again, I wanted to be free and easy with math but I couldn't do it with MOTL as my main program. I can't just run wild; I need stability to help me run a little wild. Singapore is my stability. I run wild with Miquon and living math. We play math games and read math books every day. What I'm learning through Singapore and Miquon helps me see things in real life that I can point out to the kids. ________ Yes...yes...yes! That's exactly what I want! SO.... with Singapore, the lessons must not be that long if you are ADDING "fun stuff"?? Ironically, it's the security blanket of a formal program that helps me be less formal. Does that make sense? ________ THAT makes TOTAL sense to me! ;) Or buy BJU for you and add to it what they need, the hands-on and stories. ________ BJU is "almost scripted", is hands-on and workbook, AND has stories built into each lesson...with themed characters. There is also a cartoon dvd with an African American little boy (like my boys :)) that goes w/ the lessons. Puppets, also. Not sure how long a lesson takes to teach. I have seen a couple comments like 20-30m. This is probably the only thing holding me back, because I WANT to have TIME to do games, math lit., etc... Hmm...guess I'll go ask the BJU'ers how long their lessons take!! They always want to do what's too easy though. Who doesn't like to show off for Mommy? _________ Doesn't it then make it sort of wasted time....doing lessons they've already mastered? Just wondered. Trying to piece this all together. I love the idea of the pages in a 3-ring, though. Maybe the concepst mastered could be "pulled out" and put at the back behind a "mastered" tab? Sorry, just thinkin'...hmmm.....in "type" LOL! Good luck! Math was the absolute hardest thing for me to settle on. _________ I'm with ya on that one!! ALSOOO.... a question for you.... How DID you do the grey boxed "quotes" in your message back to me?? LOL...ahhh....the worker bee status......not a lowly larvae anymore, but still very much a newbie in certain areas! LOL! :)THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!! Blessings, Denise
  13. Thank you, Dina! Would love for you to keep me posted if you think about it. I had to laugh, because we are also going to use All About Spelling. You and I sound pretty similar :001_smile: Thanks again! Blessings, Denise
  14. Still haven't figured out how to answer all of you collectively. So....I'm just going to hope this posts so you all see it and say THANK YOU!!! You ALL are GREAT and have been SO helpful!!! Hmmm....I think it was Kristina? We sound a lot alike! I am definitely NOT "mathy" either. Thank you for sharing. Your comments have really helped me. I'm still not quite sure what I'm going to do. I may jump on the yahoo board and see what's up. I'd like to at least learn the method and the "gist" of the program if I don't end up using it exclusively. I think my boys are going to need real life math. But I'm wondering if one of the hands-on math and literature guides I'm considering would fit the bill. I actually was curious about doing those alongside a more formal math that has short daily lessons, like Excel math. I keep hearing about MEP but don't even know what that stands for yet LOL! I'll have to check that darn abbreviations sticky again! I also want to check out a book called Teach Your Child Math and someone else mentioned Ray's arithmetic.-??? It's all just so darn frustrating and confusing sometimes. I almost bought Bob Jones...3rd edition the other day. I still like what I saw with that. I have always had a phobia for Math U See and for Miquon....and Singapore for that matter....not sure WHY! LOL I'm curious how you use Singapore with Miquon. I actually had ORIGINALLY purchased Making Math Meaningful...I have level one. idk.....I am about to the point of writing all the different math curriculum ideas on slips of paper, praying, and drawing one out of a hat!!! LOL....JK.......;)I think! Thank you again all of you for taking the time out of your busy lives to share and help me!!!:grouphug: Blessings, Denise:)
  15. I Really like the looks of this but am...... :crying:  HESITANT!!!!:tongue_smilie: Need some votes of confindence! The only threads I've seen are from an Empress Bee named Trivium Academy who talked of future reviews on it but apparently never actually got to try it out? :ack2: Anywaaaaaaaaay...... will keep praying and searching for the elusive perfect math program for my rambunctious little guys. TIA Blessings, Denise
  16. Hmmm... I think I'd write directly to her. She used to have them on her old website, I think. Since she is redoing it, I don't think there are any "out there" anymore. I'm not sure, though. Also, I think I saw somewhere that the new ones might all be for older kids...4th grade and up? Not sure. Did you see that? When I sent that to you, I didn't realize the new ones also have pages for notebooking. Can't remember if the old ones do? Yep, this looks like it's gonna be a keeper when "the word gets out" (and she gets them finished) :o Glad to help! Hope you find samples! I'm assuming you already googled for them? Blessings, Denise P.S. Sorry this post is so disjointed! Randomly writing down thoughts...in a hurry! LOL!! Have a good one!:D
  17. Check out this site :001_smile: Not sure if this is close enough to what you are looking for? There is a sample unit. There are MORE coming. They look great. http://www.livinglearningbooks.com/newllb/topics.php http://www.livinglearningbooks.com/newllb/overview.php These are the original guides before the updating (still a work in progress) http://www.livinglearningbooks.com/newllb/units/firstedition/level1.php http://www.livinglearningbooks.com/newllb/units/firstedition/level2.php http://www.livinglearningbooks.com/newllb/units/firstedition/level3.php Here is a very good review/description of the original guides: http://thehomeschoolmagazine.com/Homeschool_Reviews/reviews.php?rid=901
  18. love--love--love them!!! Hurry....GO buy them! :auto: Age appropriate reader, science, reading comprehension, and Godly lessons all in one..and they're inexpensive! My kids have really enjoyed them. I would read the comprehension questions to them BEFORE they read the chapter, then we'd talk about it afterwards. Sometimes, I didn't know the answer to some of the questions and I'd have them read it, so I could find out the answer (me, acting VERY excited about wanting to know that...whatever it was ;)). They loved learning things I didn't even know and found it really fun to "educate" me! There are actually really inexpensive answer key booklets to those questions if you want them, too. The answers expand on the question a bit and come in handy if your kids can't find the answer or don't remember it. These readers also work very well for teaching beginning narration. Also loved the Pathway Readers for this and having the kids read aloud to me. Also, some of the pictures in the books are perfect to blow up for coloring pages and my kids quite often used them as guides for drawing in their nature notebooks (closeup drawings of flies, earthworms, spiders, dragonflies, etc.). The pictures could also be photocopied and glued onto nature book pages as well. Anywaaay....in my opinion, they are worth every penny! We also liked a little devotional book that goes super with them, called God's Amazing Creatures & Me! and we used this book through the years as well: Bible Animals (Bible Discovery Collection) :001_smile: There is also a fairly new book out now that would be awesome as your kids got older, called Animals In The Bible Study Guide: Powerful Lessons From God's Amazing Creatures.(You can click on the green words to look at them.) Blessings, Denise
  19. Anyone using MATH ON THE LEVEL successfully?? Would love to hear from those with young dc, especially. thanks. Denise:)
  20. We have never had success with R & S 1-3, in fact I am STILL looking for an elementary program that we like, that works for my youngest two. :tongue_smilie: BUT...3 dc through Rod and Staff's 4th-7th. Then right into Teaching Textbooks algebra. All dc did very well this way. I have two friends that had the very same experience with R&S, but started the kids in at 4th grade and it was smooth sailing after that. I can't say the same with the upper grades of Saxon. However, I think you could easily do Saxon 1-3 and then switch to Rod and Staff if you wanted to. I just think they(R&S) do a better job than Saxon (jmho). For my youngest two (boys), we may actually go with the newest version of Bob Jones for K-3. I am really liking what I see. Also, have you looked at CLE? Your dd may like that as well. Our dd liked it and did well with it. I just don't think it would be a good fit for my boys. They love stories, colors, hands-on, and need a mastery program with built-in review (BJU). If I don't do BJU, I'm looking into some hands-on/literature math programs (sorry....TMI? lol!) Blessings, Denise:)
  21. EDITED: Never mind....I'm pretty sure I answered my own questions! LOL Hi. I thought I'd go right to a veteran Bob Joneser! LOL I hope you don't mind! I *think* I've FINALLY narrowed it down to BJU Math. I like the stories, the mastery-type program, the colors, the built-in review, the use of manipulatives, the user-friendly "almost scripted" TE, and the fact that NOW...in the future, I can have them do it online (when they are a little older). Now for my questions: Just wondered if I should get the whole kit (level 1) and if I should get the newer version (third edition)...like on cbd? I like the "looks" of the new one. Also, are there two editions...homeschool and private school? One more question: Is level one grade one? Thanks so much! Blessings, Denise
  22. Developmental Math Horizons (about midway into 2nd grade) Saxon 1 - SLOWWW I am STILL on the quest! Now for my youngest and last two...boys :) All three of my older dc used Rod and Staff from grade 4 on with great success. They all did only the odd or even problems according to the lesson #, and the problems where there was only "one" (whether odd or even). They also always did ALL of the story problems. If they missed two or more, they had to go back and do the rest of the problems. I also let them take the first chapter's test at the beginning of the year or the review chapters' tests. Often, they would test out of it because they had retained it all from the previous year. The teacher's notes and "pre-lesson" teaching, I think is very important. I know some skip it. Especially the mental math. Blessings, Denise
  23. Every time I check the abbreviations sticky for one I don't know, they aren't there! Grrr:confused1:. Thanks! Denise
