Bravewriter Boomerang/Arrow?
Lostinabook replied to Lostinabook's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Still need to press "buy", but these are what I'm considering right now: Because dd has to read them next year anyway: Animal Farm The Bronze Bow The Endless Steppe Because I know dd already loves these books: A Wrinkle in Time The Thief Lord Because *I* love these books: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe The Wind in the Willows Because ds loves (or I think he will love) these books: Farmer Boy Ginger Pye The Mouse & the Motorcycle I'm still deciding if I should dump one of the above choices and sub Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.- 41 replies

Grammar for a 6th grader

I hadn't even considered Stewart. The samples look interesting & if it got too hard we could just slow down. Thank you! -
How do you schedule Latin Prep?
Lostinabook replied to TKDmom's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
We just do the next thing. We started in Jan or Feb (?) & went through the first 3 chapters pretty quickly as dd has done Latin before. When we start hitting new information or lots of new vocab we'll slow down. I want to make sure she really KNOWS the vocab and the various verb tenses. -
Grammar for a 6th grader

Thank you for all of the ideas! There are a couple of suggestions I'd forgotten about or hadn't heard of. I'm still trying to decide. I want to do enough, but without overkill. The phrases are where she *really* needs work. -
Science for a 6th/7th grades
Lostinabook replied to Lostinabook's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Thank you all for your input! You are right--I don't *have* to use a textbook, but I thought it might be easier for starting out. I've not been consistent with doing things the WTM way (I've leaned more CM & the narrating/dictations are set up differently) so although dd did do the beta for WWS, she is sort of at a starting point. I didn't even consider using Singapore for outlining as the text seems so simplistic, but it probably would be a straightforward place to start. I can also check our homeschooling group's used sale for super cheap texts. If I don't pay much for them it won't bother me to just use them as a sideline. :D -

Grammar for a 6th grader
Lostinabook replied to Lostinabook's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Rod and Staff hasn't worked in the past for her, but thank you for the suggestion. Much of the grammar instruction in MCTLA is folded into the writing component of the program. My dd is not gifted and needs *way* more explicit instruction than what is provided in Paragraph Town so I'm assuming that Essay Voyage would be far, far beyond her abilities. I wish Grammar Voyage and Practice Voyage contained all of the grammar instruction. Then I'd just buy those & skip the writing part... -

Forgot about GWG--thank you for the reminder!! -
I had my science all planned out & then I read the most recent skills/content thread & am wondering if I should change things around a bit. My original plan was to do the second half of MPH 5/6 in 6th along with a couple of GEMS guides, chemistry (using both McHenry texts, the Mystery of the Periodic Table, Teaching Co. dvds, etc.) in 7th, and then some sort of text in 8th. Now I'm wondering if I should skip straight to the chemistry for next year so that dd can use a text in 7th & have 2 years of getting used to reading and outlining from a science textbook before high school. Has anyone waited until 8th to do any sort of textbook study at all? If so, were you happy with that sequence or would you do things differently if you could?

I am trying to figure out what to use for dd for grammar next year. In 4th grade we tried Rod & Staff with no success. None of it sunk it at all. Every day was like she'd never heard of grammar before. I switched to MCT & that worked wonderfully well so we have done the Island & Town series. I don't want to go on to Voyage though. Right now it appears that my choices are Analytical Grammar, CLE, or continuing to pick up grammar through Latin, diagramming, and some 4 level analysis (I would buy Practice Voyage if we did this). We are doing Killgallon and I have CW-Homer as well as some OOP grammar books. Dd does fine with the basics; she needs more work with phrases and clauses though & I'm not sure how much of that is really covered in 6th grade programs. Any suggestions?

Where did you have your rehearsal dinner?
Lostinabook replied to Teresa in MO's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We had ours at a now closed restaurant. There were a ton of people there b/c inlaws are from out of town & they wanted to invite everyone who had had to come in from elsewhere. For dessert they bought a ton of candy from Fannie May and had it served on huge trays. My brother's was also at a restaurant. My sister's was at the church where she was married. I think we just used one of the large classrooms & bil's parents had pizza brought in from Joanie's in Soulard. -

I've looked at these on & off throughout the years & am considering buying a 10 pack from HSBC since they're 50% off. I *thought* I had bookmarked a post in which someone listed the Arrows they'd purchased & enjoyed vs. the ones that were a disappointment, but I can't find it now! Did anyone else bookmark this? Also, I may just get 10 Boomerangs rather than any Arrows. Were there the same problems with some Boomerangs having very little content or are they all full issues? Thanks!
