  1. Dear Dyan,

I saw your post in the foreign language thread and I was wondering what is OSU German that you list? I am trying to learn German along with my son and the resources for German seem dismal.

    Thanks for any help,

    Sylvia

  2. Just checking in to see how you are doing. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. :Angel_anim:

  3. Sagira,

Thanks for your message. I couldn't reply privately because your box is full. I'll try and sum up my response here - there is no quoting allowed.

Would you be able to direct me to your plan then? I thought you wrote that it was on the yahoo site, but maybe I'm mistaken.

What a lovely first and second name combination, I just tried it! ;)

I'm glad you wrote what you thought of the program because I'm still a little torn as to which way to go with science and I really want to know from people, is it great or not? (I'm a WTM "true-believer" so it's a little hard for me to depart from the plan as written.) I could tell just from the little snippets that I've read that I would learn a lot from it as well.

Thank you for being specific about your supplements. I'll make note of them.

Your reply did help and there was no wait at all. Thank you for taking the time to help me.

  4. Funny you should ask - it's going great now, but wow was the last month an adventure. We had a scare with my dog (she's my little pal) that she had cancer, she was bleeding and it was just plain terrible because she has heart issues which make anesthesia/surgery dangerous for her. Amazingly, we just found out that the doctor was wrong and she does not have cancer and she's great! What a relief.

Our school year is going very well. I'm planning two weeks at a time, and while that hasn't allowed any leeway for time off, it is going great and we're getting lots of fun things done. Although we're only doing K, I've added in sort of an experimental curriculum that has lots of fun activities and I'm very excited that it is going even better than I'd dared to hope.

We've discovered that KUAppearances is on twice during the weekends!!! Last week she sang at Emmett. Boy that show just never gets old. I hope all is well with you.

  5. Thanks - that was a nice surprise today. I just love seeing that little notification thing! Wasn't that thread a complete crack-up!

  6. Thanks for answering my yogurt question. Sadly, it only did marginally better the second time. (I have one more option for saving it, so I'll see how that goes.) I don't think I adjusted enough for the cold, snowy weather. For some reason, parts of my batches often come out grainy. Appetizing huh! Anyway, thanks again for your help.

  7. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with HWT. I am a "rules follower" so the idea of skipping a book is hard on my little brain. It was nice to read that someone had already done what I am considering. I'll keep an eye on ds's penmanship to help me decide. Where is that crystal ball?... I really want to place my order now!

    Thanks again.

  8. Thanks so much for your post about HWT. Your post reminded me of my dh, he always seems to be able to distill things down to something wonderfully simple whereas I make everything overly complicated. Anyway - I really appreciate it. Have a great weekend.

  9. We watched our first downloaded movie and I've gotta say, it was great. My laptop's monitor is pretty small and I don't have the recommended RAM, but it didn't matter, it played fine. The clarity of the video was incredible. You might check if your library would participate. It's called MyLibraryDV.

Dread factor... I know all about it.

  10. Obviously, I haven't seen a lot of it, but from what I've seen it has the classic Dickens' Good and Bad characters. The bad look really bad but, because it is Dickens, I know it will turn out all right. (I told you before I'm a sucker for a happy ending.) Also, the good are just likable so I want to watch it just so I can keep up on them.

Diet-wise, do you like what you're doing? I'm trying to back into exercise - I've always been into sports but where I live now, Cheyenne, is windy and the weather is really hindering me, so I am trying to either see if I can afford to join something or find something inside my house that I like. I admire that you're exercising so well. I seem to only be able to do it if it's fun!

I found the coolest little toy. My library has enabled us to "checkout" and download movies. I just started it today with Sherlock Holmes. (The ones with Jeremy Brett, another of my favorites) I'm so happy to have access to Poirot!

    Protect those knees!

  11. Ok I'm back - taxes completed and computer revamped. (My hard drive crashed a while back and so now I am a little obsessive about performance and backing-up.)

So how are the munchkins? I also wanted to ask, what "plan" are you following for your weight loss, or is it more just patience after childbirth?

Weird switch-around at our house. My dh (Onslo) has been camped out on Sundays watching the Little Dorit series! I think it's a five-parter so we'll see if he sticks it out. I couldn't watch much of the first few episodes and now that I've seen one I'm bummed that I didn't catch it from the beginning. My poor ds is going to grow up thinking that what we're interested in is normal... he already plays cars using a British accent!

  12. Hi,

Thanks for your messages - you weren't on ignore, my computer has been locking up a lot while we're online and so I've spent this weekend and today trying to roll it all back to a better state. I will write again the computer isn't busy updating.

Congrats on the weight loss. I couldn't tell from your message if you were pleased or not. I hope you are, that's a great (and tough) thing you're doing.

  13. So, once you get the KUA set you'll be all set whenever television hits new lows! I'm thinking that you probably ought to get it sooner rather than later, before they get hard to find. I'm hoping that Onslo completes my Agatha Christie - Miss Marple set. Have you ever watched it? Even if one didn't care for mysteries, the glorious English countryside and thatched roofs are worth every moment. I often wonder, what is it about the Brits and their humor. I don't know if you feel this way, but after watching something like KUA, I see ads for American sitcoms and they look so predictable and just generally terrible that I can't bring myself to watch anything but maybe House.

BTW, love your new avatar. Hope Smarty Pants and Messy Pants are both doing great,

    :seeya:

Just wondering, what are your Group Picts about?

  14. Thanks for getting back to me. I think I'll just keep working with the things I have - I'm always trying to keep things fresh for my son but, oftentimes, it seems that he really doesn't need it anyway.

    Thank you again,

    Sylvia

  15. Cathmom,

I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I saw on one of your posts that you taught German so I thought you might be a good resource. I am looking to see if there are any free online sources of recorded German children's music. As we finish each chapter of our German study I just thought it would be nice to have a little music day.

Thanks for any help and I hope you have a great weekend.

    Sylvia :001_smile:

  16. Stacia,

Thanks so much for trying to help me locate that German resource. It's appreciated.

    Sylvia

  17. So... how was it? Were you constantly comparing "him" to Olivier? On the depression meter, how did it stack up to Tess?

Which was better, that or the Are You Being Served marathon?

    :lurk5:

  18. My Musings...

OK, I finally had a chance to look into Good Neighbors - I am so surprised. I think I mentioned that my Uncle had dated one of the cast of Rosemary & Thyme? Well, she's in your show, Felicity Kendall. Isn't that odd?

RE: Are You Being Served, Does it fit into your curriculum at all? Perhaps you could assign it to your kids so that you will all watch it together? :tongue_smilie: A few Christmases (sp?) ago my husband bought us a DVD set of Miss Marple, sadly though it was only four episodes and I just need more!!

In a way I'm glad that you didn't really like "Tess" either. I felt rather shallow for not liking it. I know I'm a sucker for a good ending but, gracious, how many terrible calamities befalling one character can you shove into a novel? Enough already. I am working through The Well-Educated Mind with a friend of mine and we have just reached Pride & Prejudice. What a contrast to Tess. Perhaps I could just avoid reading any of the really dreadful stories and keep to the "happy ones!"

Good to hear about Smartypants, she's such a cute little girl by her pics. Perhaps at least when she loses her teeth you can have something to balance out the "she's getting bigger" feelings.

Hope you are all feeling better.

  19. Could you tell Richard that we need his help? Onslo needs him to help take away our broken down car, you know, the one that has been sitting in our front yard.

Yes, at the moment there really is a broken-down car in front of my house that needs to be taken away! "Onslo" and I wanted to share that with you.

    Daisy

  20. Thanks for the cute cartoon - made my day. (Haven't had much Hive time so sorry this is way late.)

By the way, I looked up Apiphobic - very funny.

  21. Hi Rhonda,

Thanks anyway for getting back to me. My method seems to actually be working out pretty good - I must say I love HST.

    Happy schooling and Merry Christmas,

    Sylvia

  22. Rhonda,

I saw your thread post about loop scheduling and HST+ and was wondering if you had come up with a way to work them together? I have been trying it and asked for better ideas on the Homeschool Tracker Discussion group and just yesterday there were others asking the same, so I thought I'd try and hunt down anyone doing it. Whenever you have time I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks so much for any ideas.

Here is a link to what I wrote on their board if you are interested.

    Have a great weekend,

    Sylvia

  23. Oh dear how could I have made such a blunder... I was thinking so hard about not typing Daisy that I didn't even picture who Rose was! I'm so ashamed!!! (Does this faux pas make me... Elizabeth?) Perhaps we can still hope that Rose will indeed marry a Greek shipping tycoon and make you proud.

I must also admit to having completely forgotten about the musical bidet. I need to watch more KUA and... you need to get out more. :D

I'll make sure to tune in this week if I can find it.

  24. I'm just itching to know who it was... Sheridan? Your sister, Rose, with the sauna and room for a pony?

A few years ago I had a cable installer come by a few times. I had the hardest time talking with him at first because his name was... Tarquin! He had a British accent so it was all I could do to not laugh whenever he was here.

I was just reading a thread about the tone on the boards for the veterans and I just thought I'd say thanks for our little exchange - it's been nice to feel connected.

    Sylvia
