  1. Thanks for the suggestions :-) My parents go away to Columbus for a weekend every year, and love it! I'd love Amish Country, but DH might just die. :glare:
  2. I'm thankful to report that things seem to have gone well! Praise God! They will be able to see him soon. Prayers for his recovery are appreciated as well. He's 78 and still a full time pastor. He doesn't know the meaning of "retirement" or "rest." He was convinced that he would be preaching again within a few weeks....
  3. I've done the Airforce Museum and we did Carillion Park ages ago. Have you ever been to Fort Ancient? That's not really Dayton...closer to Morrow/ Lebanon. Piatt Castles sounds neat, too.
  4. Thanks for all the ideas, everyone! I'll share them with DH later and we can pick several things to do. Here's hoping the weather is nice next week!!
  5. This is what I would say. As my college professors told me, and I tell my students, the MLA book does not contain examples of every situation we can find. Sometimes you just have to cobble them together. My only other suggestion would be to check the Purdue Owl.
  6. Haha! I've grown up in Cincy and went to school near Dayton. What's there to do in Dayton anyway??
  7. We would appreciate prayers for my grandfather this morning. He was taking another patient to the hospital for a minor procedure on Monday, but ended up being admitted for chest pains. He is now having triple bi-pass surgery. He does not look like your typical heart patient at all. He's active, a healthy weight, etc, so we are all kind of shocked by this. God's providence through this has been incredible. He's in the best heart hospital in our city, which he would not have gone to had he gone through his regular dr, lots of his family members are on Spring Break, they caught the blockage before it caused any damage, several of our church members work at this hospital and were able to give medical advice, and on and on. This is my mom's dad, if any of you remember Leanna. She doesn't post much since she had her surprise baby in October. Thanks for your prayers.
  8. We're going to Columbus because we live in Cincy and Columbus is not Cincy :-) If we stayed home, we would be too productive, so I want to get away, but not drive for hours (pregnant woman that I am), plus, we've done the Cincy museums and such. I'm ok with some walking, but we'll have to take it a day at a time... Your ideas are great! Thanks so much for putting together so much info. I completely agree with you that Graeter's just about the best, but now I'm intrigued to check out the other place you mentioned. ETA: Ok, I reread your post, and now I definitely have to check out Knights! Anything that can rival Graeter's is worth a stop (or three).
  9. You're welcome. I took classes from Mrs. Howat for three years of high school, and now I'm teaching her class in the same program. Her son, Tyler Howat, was the TA at the time :-) I think I can also recommend Betsy Howard, but again, I don't know what she teaches. She taught at a prestigious classical school in our area for two years, and I worked with her in other capacities.
  10. Mr. Howat or Mrs. Howat are both wonderful. I know them personally. Mallory Musser is an excellent teacher as well, but I'm not sure which courses she teaches.
  11. This. I'm a Cedarville Grad and I took TPS like classes (from Shaunna Howat, in person) and I completely agree about the workload. I think it is all manageable and great prep for college, but you want to enter it gradually, as other posters have said. My brother and sister both took Politics and American Culture and Humanities online from Cedarville and did very well.
  12. This one is great! http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/01/beef-stew-with-beer-and-paprika/
  13. Yes, I've heard about Easton and it's on our short list. Thanks!
  14. DH and I are going away for a few days this month. What are some fun things we could do as a couple? I'm thinking about Cosi one day... For some info, I'll be 25 weeks pregnant; DH is a math/science person; I'm a history person; we're staying near Dublin. Thanks for the help!
  15. Umm, google gives different answers. After watching some DVDs on multiples my mom realized that knowledge has changed since her nursing school days...
  16. My mom's five month old surprise is the darling of the family. He was a late in life surprise, so the kids were all older, but the pregnancy was rough and she was concerned about her age. Now, we can't imagine life without him :-) He and my baby will be just nine months apart!!
  17. I'm throwing around some ideas for a possible class I would teach from my home, so I'm coming to ask for some help from the Hive. I'm thinking about doing a one semester writing and government course. I prefer to teach writing along side history, and choosing government would give families flexibility if they don't all happen to be on the same track for history. The writing assignments would be based on reading assignments. I'd love to incorporate some primary source material as well as a text. We would be able to stop and address interesting current events that come up (i.e. a unique Supreme Court decision or an election). Writing assignments would focus on critical thinking and style. Possible essay topics include: What is government? What is a Biblical view of government? Compare/contrast the U.S. govt, to another system... The course would incorporate revision to hone writing skills. Would this type of class be interesting to you? If your child was taking this class, what would you like to see in it? Thanks for the help!
  18. Our family chiro does this kind of thing. My husband hasn't ever been and he thinks it weird. But for my mom, myself, brother, and now aunt, he has proved to be very accurate. He can usually identify other things wrong with me that I haven't told him. This was also true with my aunt, who has a complicated family history which she did not disclose to him. He correctly pinpointed several things. Not sure about the science behind it, but it has helped me a lot.
  19. I had a similar problem when we got married this summer. I'd start making chili and realize I didn't have cumin or chili powder. We registered for a spice rack for a wedding gift, and while I don't use all the spices, it has been worth it. I also think that I can get free refills for up to five years. I've recently bought spices at Aldi. They have a really good size for 99cents. They don't have an unlimited selection, but they have all the basics.
  20. When I saw this thread title I envisioned a new version of Anne of Green Gables in which Matthew doesn't buy her the dress with puffed sleeves... Glad to know only Wendy has changed, not Anne.
  21. I'm a new bride, and I really appreciated when people bought us things off our registry. I had several people who thought the registry was impersonal and wanted to do something else, but really, I would have preferred the things on our list. That's just me though :-)
