  1. OP, I guess you just need to investigate the specific department :001_rolleyes:
  2. English will drive her crazy if she is not into lit. I was the same way, so I changed. FWIW, I do love lit, I just preferred the historical, factual aspect of it. I second my suggestion to look into History or Political Science.
  3. The experiences I gained in my History degree and my Editing & Publishing minor were vastly different. History taught me to think and research, while technical writing taught me how to correct errors and "write pretty." Long winded History majors often have a hard time with clarity, while clarity and succinctness are the mantra of technical writers. I agree with others who have said that Communications is a worthless degree. I switched from English to History because I wasn't interested in figuring out what the feminists thought about literature written before their time. I cared about what the author meant, so history was a natural choice for me. I actually took many poli sci courses and enjoyed those as much or more that the history courses. Internships are invaluable in these fields, and can set your student apart from the rest. Many of my fellow graduates have pursued employment or further schooling as a direct result of their undergraduate internship. All of these majors are looking at an M.A if one wants to stay in the field. I ended up teaching Rhetoric this year, which utilized both my major and my minor, but I will primarily use my education in teaching homeschoolers.
  4. Let her try Anne if she wants to. I read them at 8, and though I skipped Anne of Windy Poplars, I loved the series. E. Nesbit books are definitely a higher reading level, but it sounds like she might enjoy them. What about the Dear America and Royal Diaries? I read dozens of those and loved them. Actually, the Royal Diaries really helped cement my knowledge of the royal dynasties :-)
  5. I had a horrible experience with it. I took it as an anti-malarial for a missions trip a few summers ago. I felt awful when on it, and continued to have side effects months after it. I also had a lot of mental/emotional side effects that I think were caused by the havoc it was wreaking in my gut. I had terrible anxiety, insomnia, "feelings of impending doom" etc. At one point, I was so sick ( physically and emotionally) that I could hardly eat that I lost about 30 lbs in one semester. I have to run, but I'll check back later if you have any questions.
  6. I haven't read everything on your list, but I would definitely emphasize the Federalist and Anti-federalist papers. Providing good background on those is helpful, such as who wrote what, and how else that author figured in the Constitutional Convention, etc., because many students don't have that background when they go to college. I read The Last of the Mohicans in the 9th grade, and I believe I read Johnny Tremain before that. Johnny Tremain might be light for an 11th, grader, but it is still a good read, and I loved it.
  7. Thanks for these thoughts. Obviously, I can't cover every base, and my background is not in ed psych, but I'm hoping I might be able to help a few high schools with a subject that is sometimes hard to tackle. Anyone else?
  8. Thanks! I will check out that thread. I'm still hoping someone will chime in about using it for high school...
  9. I think 3 or 4 small assignments, or the suggestions for a PPT or term paper are sufficient. I really wish I had become more proficient in PPT before college. The small assignments could be less than 5 pages. They could be anything from compare/ contrast essays, book reports, creative dialogue, an analysis of a famous speech...
  10. I'm a homeschool graduate and I'm currently teaching Rhetoric in a homeschool program. I'm planning to stay home with my baby next year, but I would love to do some tutoring or teach a small class from my home. What would you look for in a small, individualized high school writing course? What are some things that would make this appealing to you? I've had one parent contact me about working on scholarship and college admissions essays, but I'd love to have expand on that. Thanks for your help!
  11. I do some things with colored pens and highlighters. For me, where the notes are in space really helps me remember. For a Constitutional Law class, a friend and I spread all of our notecards (upwards of 50) on the floor in a very specific pattern, organizing them according to relationship :-)
  12. Of course. My husband is a math professor and he would agree with you. You will find a lot more variance within the Humanities.
  13. Absolutely! Sermons are very good practice. I had a huge number of college classes that had no visuals at all (and I just graduated in 2012). I had several professors who sat at a table and faced us, and did almost no writing on the board, let alone use a power point. In fact, most of these classes depended on extensive notes. I always have to go back and reorganize my notes, and they are not in outline form, but they helped me and I was often asked to share them with other students. In college, almost all of my notes were taken on my laptop. Actually, visuals can sometimes hinder note taking because the student thinks that only the PPT is important. The students I tutored often had this problem. I think Mom used some IEW with us in jr. high....
  14. I had a car on campus for the primary reason of coming home on weekends and commuting over an hour to church. My sister and I shared the car for a while, and now she definitely uses it for off-campus clinicals. The only things within walking distance of our school were an overpriced convenience store, a few local eateries, and a small pharmacy. Getting out for basic necessities was crucial. A lot of people had cars by senior year, but freshmen year I did feel a bit "mooched off of" for rides to Walmart etc. Especially the girl who was mad at me because I went to Walmart on Saturday morning and that didn't fit with her sleep schedule...
  15. I don't think you can go wrong. I had a Kitchen Aid on my registry and my MIL was actually going to buy it for us, but someone else bought it first. I'm sure that she will love it if that's what you decide to do. I personally would have loved the family tradition gift from MIL. What about saving the Kitchen Aid for Christmas?
  16. I'm 5' 10'' and I haven't been able to find a single thing at Target, and I keep looking. I've found some things at Motherhood and would buy more, but their sales don't seem as good. My go to place is the Gap. Their sales are great and their stuff fits me pretty well. I'm wearing a new Gap shirt and someone told me I look tiny. It is now my new favorite shirt ;)
  17. I was a bride last summer. I had the most filled out registry on the planet, and I loved it when people got us that stuff. However, from my MIL, the family tradition pancake pan would have been very special. If I was the bride, that's what I would want from you.
  18. If it's already pretty bad, there's not much that I know of. You just have to let it run its course. Not natural or cheap, but Abreva helps my dad. Ice might also help with the pain.
  19. You can caramelize them for salads. I love pecans and I wish I still had access to my grandparents' pecan tree!
  20. I missed seeing the British Museum when I was there. I'd do that. Westminster Abbey was my absolute favorite place to visit...
  21. What is your opinion of Lost Tools of Writing for high school? I've looked over it briefly and drooled :p I'm a writing teacher so I'm exploring options that I might use to teach a class from my home. Thanks!
  22. But they make even us tall women look pregnant, or they're too short! Now, of course, that I am pregnant, I'm going to enjoy a maxi dress for a few weeks :)
  23. Soma! They are like a mature, grown up, doesn't-cater-to thirteen-year-olds, Victoria's Secret. The fittings I've had there have been accurate.
  24. I think there are different kinds of synesthesia. My mom and I don't fit perfectly into the categories, but some of the things don't seem weird to me.
