  1. My son had an eye appt earlier this week, and besides being a bit on the plus side, he checked out ok. Part of his problem is the fact that he doesnt want to put any effort into reading. He says he doesnt want to read even though weve drilled the first 45 phonograms all. year. long. He knows 100+ words on flashcards, words we have sounded out and I've given a phonics lesson on, but he might forget them after a week or so. I tried a new sound out just to break us away from the usual grind. It was /ey/. I told him sometimes it says "long a" and other times it says "long e" I told him to say the sound while he writes it, and of course, he writes "ae" Maybe the program we are using is confusing, I dont know. I can tell it wont be forever but I wonder when it will all click:)
  2. Sorry that I worded this so confusing... I meant your youngest child, that can read....
  3. Yes, your youngest child that can read, how old was he when he read pretty fluently?
  4. I guess I meant youngest reader in your family.. First time poll here...I love polls, but maybe Im not cut out to create them yet, but maybe my next will be better. When I made the poll, I didn't think I wanted multiple answers, so I thought I'd just ask about one child in a person's family, one that was maybe around the same birth order that my son is in (the last born of three) Im not sure if I can edit this, so maybe answer closest to the question and then feel free to talk abt the ages all your children learned to read:)
  5. I guess I could have made this poll for all children and made it so that you could choose multiple answers...oh well! Of course, Id love to hear how old all of your children were when they learned to read. My daughter who is almost 8, and my oldest son both learned to read fluently in Kindergarten at age 5 almost 6.
  6. First time poll here, so here goes... I'm just wondering at what age could your child read most any simple children's book fairly fluently, such as Green Eggs and Ham. We are working on reading with my freshly turned 6 year old, and just havn't turned the corner just yet. Im wondering when it will just click for him. I know every child is different but I'd like to hear what the typical ages are that children learn to read at.
  7. I like both so well that I am alternating them. I do MCT for a few days, then switch to Shurley for a day or two. And all the while, I am doing spelling from the Phonics Road, even though that program has grammar and writing, etc built into it. I like to pick and chose what I like and to try new things as long as Im not confusing my daughter. Shurley became too predictable for her and she knew the answers but didnt really understand what they meant. MCT is helping her understand the context better, instead of just recongizing what answer Im looking for. Its been a challenge, especially since she is in 2nd grade. She is gifted in LA, but these concepts are hard to keep straight. i dont know what next year will bring but I definatly plan on keeping both Shurley and MCT around.
  8. We have 5; but that's only because someone my husband was working for gave them to my daughter, along with a box full of clothes. We don't even know all their names; there's Addy, Kirsten, Molly, Josephina and ?. She got them when she was like 2 and she's just now showing interest in them. She'll be 8 in April.
  9. I had to during my 2nd pregnancy with DD. I never had any side effects from the Lovenox though. I can't remember if I did those twice daily or once, but the pregnancy went fine. I hope hers' is uneventful as well:)
  10. We are doing TOG year 2 this year. We often seem to only have time to read, read, read and discuss what we've read, but havnt had time to do the vocab, the maps after week 10 or so, or any crafts, etc with it. We are in week 20 right now and are reading anything from lower grammar on up to Dialectic. Im thinking that I will do year three next year, but I was thinking about following a spine book and just getting titles from TOG's selections on their site and also other books from the library. But if I get my hands on year 3 cheap, I will do it again next year. I think I just havnt planned my weeks out well enough in advance, and maybe that's why I havnt been following it well.
  11. All I know, from going down the Phonics Road, is that /ea/ can say long e, ea like in bread or short e, or long a, such as in the word great. So Id say /ea/ like long e, but I guess it could make the a sound unless there is a rule stating otherwise that I cant think of. (I might have to break out my WRTR book)
  12. My 7 almost 8 year old second grade daughter did Saxon in K and in 1st grade at public school. She was pretty much reading well by the end of K, and now is reading at a 4/5th grade level. She can read from Charlie and the Chocolate Factoey, Little House in the Big Woods, etc. She still likes Junie B Jones 1st grader books whch are at abt a 3rd grade reading level. I think Saxon did a great job getting her ready to read and I almost kick myself for getting a different LA program in our 1st year homeschooling. I wish I would have kept going in Saxon.
  13. Just wanting to remind those who have read 360 min or 6 hrs to a earn a ticket for both child and teacher a free day at Six Flags, that today is the last day to sign the kids up online, and you have until March 9th to send in your forms....
  14. I ended up ordering from here... http://www.vitacost.com/Referee?wlsrc=rsReferral&ReferralCode=3370773 I got two 54 ounce jars for $40 with free shipping over $49 purchase. Thanks to everyone who replied;I'll keep my eye out for good deals from those sites mentioned in the future. I also signed up for some of their discounts and newsletters too.
  15. I looked into buying from this site...it looks like a great deal, but I couldn't find any free shipping codes. Any chance anyone knows of any? It looks like there charge for shipping is over $10.
  16. It looks like their price went up to $54 for two 54 oz. jars...but I do have Prime, so it would be great to get the free 2 day shipping. When did you get the $39 pricing? I guess they change the price all the time. Hmmm....
  17. Do you guys think this is a good deal... http://www.vitacost.com/Vitacost-Extra-Virgin-Certified-Organic-Coconut-Oil-54-fl-oz It's 54 oz and $20.00, plus free shipping if I buy $50 or more. Does it matter what brand you buy?
  18. I'm looking for at least a 54 ounce bottle of coconut oil and perhaps some 4,000 mg soft capsule coconut oil supplements. I've looked at Vitacost and they are out of the capsules, and I seem to be wasting time googling here. Are there any sources that you buy from that have good prices and great products too?
  19. We are liking the Rainbow and since he is doing science willingly everyday, I thought I'd vote for it for you to try. I like the text because it isn't dry and too texty; it's to the point and explains it in a way that my son retains the information and even likes to explain what he's read to us. Physics has been a fun place to start and a refreshing change of course after spending most of the year doing Earth Science halfheartedly.(I think I lost everybody in the weather chapters in another program) I dont know much about the other two programs though; I know Sonlight has everything laid out for you, so that might be nice too. We are doing a section or two a day in Rainbow and have just ordered the lab manuals and teacher's helper's since we've decided the text is for us. Maybe you could do a wanted ad for what you are looking for and get it for a fraction of the original cost.
  20. The part where the mother says... "I'm just so confused at this moment, thinking should I take my daughter out of this school," Pyles said. "If this is what is going on, I don't like it. It's very scary" was really hard for me to read. I hope she doesnt let her other older daughter go back to this school!
  21. Welcome to my home away from home! (but while I'm home):001_smile:
