  1. Hi, I purchased this used and I have a question...it is the 2004 edition, are there normally "notes" after each weeks schedule, this only has like 2 pages of notes through out the 36 weeks and it is about Bible Memorization....or public speaking. Just curious..I was thinking the Cores had the weekly schedule followed by a page or two of notes for that week but maybe I am thinking of the LA program. This does come with the History, Read a Loud and Reader study guides. Also...the only thing I am missing are the maps, I believe there should be 2 of them, from Walk the World's Rim...any idea how I can get those or should I just skip it? Thanks a bunch! Kim
  2. Oh wow....sometimes I wonder about myself. I have printed out 2 book of Centuries and had them bound cheap. What on earth am I thinking..it was nearly $45 just for 2 timeline books. Okay...that just saved some $. The older I get...... I found a used IG but it is $50 w/ binder...my goodness!
  3. Thank you everyone, I never thought about just getting the readers schedules! What is the highest level it goes? The readers schedules have some map work also don't they? I was going to get just the IG, consumables, timeline books etc..map, and it was almost $200!! Oh boy.... Kim
  4. Okay..I was all set to do Sonlight Core 3 BUT..it is very expensive to get the IG and books, map, timeline books etc... In looking at ebay the used stuff sells for almost new. I am wanting lots of great books scheduled mainly for a child that struggled learning to read, is doing good now but is not used to reading great books. I know..he may not ever LOVE it but I at least want lots of books scheduled for him, I need a schedule desperately. I do have a "small town" library that is good in Inter Library Loans, if they don't have the books, BUT...when they come in is another story so..the library might be an option to help cut expenses. I keep looking at BF and like the Providential View of History BUT...I can't see the books holding his attention right now..I don't know! I know he, and my daughter, would fit in Core 3 well...I just keep going back and forth. I am wanting to simplify but is Sonlight too time intensive for me, I have 7 kiddos, 2 learning to read, things have gotten hectic. I was thinking about doing Core A w/ the younger two but just as having a guide to read aloud to them etc..not really getting too intense on anything. Oh...boy, if I had $500 laying around just to blow I would jump on Sonlight...just really struggling to figure this out. Thanks! Kim
  5. Did anyone get this coupon? Can you share, I am ready to place an order. Kim
  6. Not to create yet another question but...If I were to do FFL 3 where would I start in WWE. I am not sure I am going to go that route, I have 7 children and right now I just want things simplified, I am trying to get the grammar/composition going as we have struggled there because I am not confident AT ALL in that area, but I also desperately am trying to simplify. Kim
  7. Okay...couple of questions.. So...I could go right into R&S 5? Seriously?....that seems like it would be way too hard. Also...Saxon Grammar looks like it starts out very basic, the Grammar 5, does it do diagramming? I am not a fan of that but..it is probably because I am not a fan of grammar at all and diagramming looks terribly complicated. Thanks for everyone's input. I also have a 4th grader that I would like to do together if possible (should have mentioned that earlier..ha)
  8. If you use Winston what do you use for puncuation etc... Thanks, Kim
  9. Hi, We have not done a lot of formal grammar/writing as it is a really weak area for me. I love the looks of CLE but really don't want to play catch up w/ so many workbooks, this would be for a 5th grade boy who does NOT like to write.. We need something that covers beginning concepts w/out having to go back to 2nd grade workbooks or whatever. I am also using AAS for spelling so I don't "need" spelling. I have looked at samples of WWE but would not know where to start, I like FLL because of it scripted but..again, I can't play 4 years of catch up. I want something easy to follow, doesn't have to be scripted but needs to be very clear as to how to use. I had purchased Easy Grammar Plus but I don't see a lot about Easy Grammar anymore. Please advise. Kim (homeschooling mom of 7)
  10. Thank you so much for your posts...just needed that push in the right direction..ha! I look forward to it. I have also wanted to make reading aloud more apart of our day and w/out a schedule I don't get it done soo...I am looking forward to "enjoying" books more that we are now :) Kim
  11. Thank you so much...I looked back over my post and well...I don't "need" it to be providential, just accurate and have really great books. We would be doing American History 3 then 4 and I am really wanting to give my children a love of books. We are conservative in our beliefs but I want them to love good literature and enjoy it. Kim
  12. Okay...I am getting ready, I think, to order Sonlight, I mainly want to use if for the great books in the lower levels. Oh..not sure how to ask. I like the way BF books does History w/ the Providential approach and the Soverignty of the Lord. Now...my main thing right now, with my children in the lower grades, is to instill a love of learning/reading etc... I, of course, have heard convtroversial things about any program but I am curious as to the accuracy of the History portrayed in the Sonlight program. In American History do they talk about the Pilgrims etc... This is not coming out really great, not sure if this will come across the way I am hoping. I am not really concerned at this point that they remember dates or any of that, I don't need chronological, I just want accuracy w/ great living books. Okay....hope this is too mumbled up! Kim
  13. Hey... Can I ask one more thing..ha~! Okay...should I do Sonlight LA for the youngers or IEW Pal writing etc.. I like the idea of the Sonlight Guides and readers but.....have not heard such great things about the LA. What I have heard is that it is too easy on grammar, not a problem with me. I would like to do more of a CM type learning but I need more structure for myself or stuff doesn't get done that needs to. Kim
  14. Sandra, That helps a LOT.....I have TWSS, it is sitting, ha! I need the lesson plans and had thought about All Things Fun....or whatever it is called so that may just be the way to go. I had also thought of Jr AG so I appreciate it very much.... THANK YOU!! Kim
  15. Sandra, Oh my goodnes...I just typed out a long post and clicked something and it is gone. Thank you for your post! Okay...this is what the plan "might" be, if you all would see what you think. For my younger ones, 5 and 7, I was going to do the Sonlight LA (or IEW's PAL Writing), although we already own and are doing ETC and sonlight would schedule that along w/ the reading of readers, which is what I need...THE SCHEDULE!! Then mainly just use the Core Guide for doing some read a loud and Bible stuff.... For my older two do the Core for History/Geography and Bible. I do not think we could do the LA for that core as we don't ever do formal grammar or anything so I don't think they would be able to do the LA. Maybe Grammar Ace? My son is writing phobic, he does NOT like to so he needs some help. My daughter, 3rd grade, writes a lot more as she writes letters to grandma etc... So..not sure what to do for LA for them. I would also like to use the Core Readers. Would that work if I don't use the LA Guide? Thanks again for helping me work through this!! Kim (homeschooling mom of 7)
  16. Thank you for all the posts... Well...I figure I could do 2 Cores w/ Sonlight. I am not doing Sonlight LA, will probably just do Sonlight LA for the younger ones. I figured core B or A, can't remember what is the same as Core K and then a Core for the Older kids. I do not like having everyone together in one history time period, it just doesn't work here. I want great literature w/ maybe some map work, keeping a timeline book but NOTHING that is horribly time consuming as we also have math etc... Right now everything feels so time consuming w/ several in the process of reading and younger ones that need help w/ math but my two in 3rd and 5th I want to make sure they have a good supply of great books and a schedule that will help me make sure they are getting them read, questions to ask to make sure they are comprehending AND VOCABULARY..forgot about that!! My one that is in 5th grade really has never developed a love of learning to read so I would really like to get a good supply of books for him, to hold his interest a bit, even if he doesn't jump for joy, I at least would like for it to be bearable! :) Kim
  17. Okay... If you were not really wanting an "all in one" program but would love a program that SCHEDULED in the reading of great books for kids in Grades 1-6 or something like that...which would you use? I am not sure I can do an all in one like HOD but really want my kids reading lots of great books and with seven children I feel I have books for some, not for others, I have so many on different reading levels. I need beginning books and books for a 1st, 3rd, 5th. I would love a program that schedules these in w/ daily schedules to check off, that would be one less thing I worry about ...ha! I need to keep lots of books going so they do not get bored. Kim
  18. Hi, I am looking for a curriculum for my son, 13, that focuses on Bible/Character, great literature etc... Definately Christian Kim
  19. Does How To Teach Spelling review words, if using their workbooks, or do you have to do/schedule your own review? I have HTTS manual and workbooks 1 and 2, I think the manual is awesome, I haven't started them yet as I was unsure if this actually had built in reviews?
  20. Okay..when going through the lessons do you have them write and spell also? We are going to be doing AAS but...I want to make sure the phonics end is thorough and I want to do it "right". We are also using Explode the Code along w/ AP so I am not sure they need to write the words and spell the words in AP also.. Thanks, Kim
  21. Do you encounter any problems with the ba/be/bi method, that seems like it would be confusing. What happens when they learn me, we, she etc....will they think those are short vowel sounds? Kim
  22. Hi, If you had a lot of children, one needing remediating for reading/spelling, one that is in the process of learning to read and one wanting to start 5 1/2 years, which program would you use? I am using ETC right now but am getting a bit frustrated w/ book 4 and syllable division, maybe I am making it too hard but there is no answer key. I have one son who needs help w/ longer words, had thought about Rewards Intermediate but am not sure we NEED that. Just would like some opinions on what has worked well.. Kim
  23. Okay...my son is reading on a 4th/5th grade level...I am wanting something to help him stop "guessing"...he tries to read to quickly and leaves out words, although his comprehension is good... He also stumbles on bigger words. I would love something that helps me and him really break words down and look at them. I need something with an answer key. We are doing ETC for "practice" stuff and I sometimes am unsure myself how to break the words into syllables, do the new TE guides have answer keys for this? So...we need to work on fluency, bigger words and spelling. I had thought about doing AAS as I am planning on doing it w/ the older kids but I see it moving way to slow for him and I think he would hate the tiles. Thanks in advance, Kim
