  1. I bought a used copy of Rudginsky's How to Teach Spelling. Is there any great value to having the workbooks? If so, is there any value to buying the lower level workbook (like, lots more work on these things) or does each level contain ALL the same info as the lower ones plus new stuff? And finally, if I have the How to Teach book, do I need the teaching manuals for the workbooks? I can't tell based on Rainbow Resource's few sample pages -- the only ones I found online. Thank you.
  2. Hi -- I'm new to this forum. I have browsed and lurked through the years, finding answers and ideas, but I'm really stuck now. I'm intentionally switching to a rules based program for spelling and I've ordered How To Teach Spelling and How to Spell 2 workbook, but I just can't figure out what we're supposed to do as daily lessons :confused: In the beginning, do we... Do we start with Sound Sheet 1 and memorize those rules? Do I just make up reinforcement activities to go with learning the rules? Do I choose Dictation Words from pg 6 of HTTS for her spelling words or do we forget "spelling words" all together for a while until we learn the rules? What is HTTS referring to when it says "Lesson"? A chapter in HTTS? A page in the workbook? I just feel like I'm missing some big part of this to have a structured, systematic spelling program.   3. I am switching spelling programs in a month or two and this program seems to fit the bill but I can't seem to find many reviews on it. I am looking for an inexpensive, easy to use (i.e. pretty much open and go) rule based program that presents the rule, gives the child some practice, has some dictation and then moves on. I don't need a bunch of manipulatives or bells and whistles. I just want to get the job done as painlessly as possible. My son is workbook averse, but will tolerate a little bit of book work once in a while. I'm hoping this program is not super workbook-y, if it is then it won't work for us. Also, my DS will have completed AAS level 2 before moving into this program, is HTS 2 a good place to start? I appreciate any feedback, both positive or negative! TIA :)
  4. I bought the HTTS book and Level 2 of the How to Spell book. I am confused on how to use it. Do I just go by the How to Spell book and refer to the HTTS manual as needed? Do I use a notebook in addition to the HTS book? The manual gives a sample of what the student page should look like but there is nothing like that in the workbook. To further confuse me, the manual is divided by chapters but the workbook is not. If anyone has used this can you please lay it all out for me? I have tried searching for the answer on here and on the web but haven't found anything that has cleared this up for me. Thanks in advance!
  5. Dd9 recently wrote a 3 page story for fun. It was the first long piece of composition that she ever produced. I wasn't correcting or grading it, but looking through it made me realize that she isn't going to be a natural speller. I had planned on just going over words as they came up in her writing, but now I'm considering using a program. I really like the looks of HtTS, but it's been really hard to get a good sense of how the program flows. I specifically want to know how teacher intensive it is, what does a day look like, how much time per day, and if you progress to the next workbook once you've completed one. (I know she would start with workbook 3 but once she's completed it would she move to workbook 4?) Thanks!
  6. I'm wondering what the differences are in these workbook-based programs. I know HtTS is said to be a lot like AAS but in workbook format. Do the workbooks spell the content of each daily lesson out more clearly than the TM? Also, Ellie mentioned once that if forced to make a workbook recommendation for folks who insist on it, Rod & Staff Spelling by Sound & Structure would be her choice. Ellie, if you don't mind, can you share what you like better about this than SWO? I've never seen R&S Spelling before; only a quick peek at online samples. As for SWO & AAS - That's what I have, so I'm wondering how the other 2 above compare. I like what AAS teaches, and I like SWO's format. Can you offer any comparison of HtTS or R&S spelling to eachother or to SWO or AAS? :bigear:
  7. Can anyone tell me about these two spelling programs? Are they similar to each other and/or to AAS? If you have used them, what did you like and what didn't you like? Anything else you can tell me about them?
  8. I just read a post from someone stating that HTTS is a workbook version of AAS. I looked for reviews and only found a couple on amazon. Do you know where I can find other reviews? If you have used both programs, can you compare and contrast them? I like the price of HTTS but I like the reviews of AAS. I am torn. If you have used or are using HTTS, can you tell me the strengths and weaknesses of the program? Who do you think this would work for? Who would this not work for? :bigear:

  10. I will be adding spelling to the summer school studies this summer for my fifth grade son. His spelling is pretty awful, everything is spelled the way it sounds. Can anyone recommend a workbook that covers phonics based spelling? I am not interested in a complicated program, as this will just be for summer school, so a workbook or online is best. Thanks y'all.
  11. Can anyone tell me about this program? I'm looking for something new for my 4th grader. I recently dropped Spelling Power b/c I was frustrated with the fact that it didn't teach the "why's" of spelling. I decided to take dd through the spelling portion of Phonics Road 1 (which I'm using with my boys), but the words are way too easy for her. After working through the first half of the program in the last 3 weeks, she has a good understanding of the phonograms and how to mark them. Now she's ready to move on to some more challenging words. Is HTTS/HTS an O-G program? Does it use phonograms that would be similar to PR? If I bought level 3 would that be about the right level for 5th grade?
  12. I am looking at both AAS and how to teach spelling. I have a a 6 year old that will start spelling in the fall and a 7 year old that has done one year of spelling, but is really struggling with it. What is the best program for that age? I've seen a couple of posts in the forum that lead me to believe that How to teach spelling might be for a little older child. Is that true. Is there any other curriculum out there that I'm missing. I'm ready for a change, just can't figure out what I want to change to. TIA
  13. For those of you who use How to Teach Spelling by EPS (Rodginsky), what are your day to day lessons/weekly progressions like? I've looked at some samples, but I still can't wrap my head around what will be done in each lesson and what is accomplished in a given week.   14. I just bought How to Teach Spelling and How To Spell Workbook 3 but I'm confused as to how to start. I will be using it with a 4th grader who is a terrible speller (I swear spelling is heriditary and he gets it from his father, lol).
  15. My 13 yo dd really wants to use AAS. The only thing is I would prefer that she be working on a little bit more advanced level at the same time. We are starting with Level 1 of AAS, as recommended. I do love the program, but thought it might be a bit of a confidence booster for her to work in Megawords also...more on her level, kwim?
  16. I've got SWR and AAS, but i'm so tired of the constant work involved in spelling. We've been doing SWR for about 2 solid years and my son still has horrible spelling. He starts 5th grade this year. He loves the program (swr) b/c he enjoys spending the time w/me. However, I have two other children to teach (trying to use AAS w/them, but I'm finding there is NO time after the SWR and writing, and other subjects my oldest is doing) and have to cut down on the 'one on one' time at some point. Also, what I seem to be finding is that he understands the logic behind the rules for spelling, but he doesn't seem to know or understand how to apply them to his writing. The other day he spelled 'get', 'git'! He's in 5th grade!!! There are some slight LD issues, but I have complete faith that he can spell better than what I am witnessing. I think part of his problem is that I see that he struggles in many language arts areas and I don't push him or require all that much of him. Well, now, I am finding that I have a 5th grader that thinks EVERYTHING is FAR TOO HARD for him! :glare: I find that at this age/year; I would love to require more responsibility from HIM instead of ME! :glare: So, to the question at hand. How to teach spelling was mentioned on here the other day and it peaked my curiosity. So, I've been looking into it and love that it's based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. I love that it's very similar in style to what he's already been taught- spelling rules/phonograms, etc. But, i'm loving what appears to be a more independent approach to spelling. It seems less teacher intensive. Am I correct in assuming that? I appreciate any insight you ladies can give! Thanks, Bethany

I did a search for my last comments about HTTS so that I could admit to everyone that I found AAS very cheap used and bought it. :D I have no doubts that it is based on HTTS, but it has some incremental steps that HTTS is missing, probably pulled from an OG reading program. DD was balking at sounding out and learning phonograms and basically anything phonetic about spelling. Having AAS is worth it for me because I am absolutely confident that I am teaching it the correct way, and that I am not making her do something she isn't ready for, or missing any steps. I need that confidence to stand up to DDs bad attitude. I will probably switch back to HTTS after this first level of AAS because then I can implement their methods with HTTS, plus the beginning steps are already taken care of. I have been recommending HTTS instead of AAS all over. I have egg on my face. :tongue_smilie:
