  1. I was fortunate to have an awesome driver's ed teacher who showed us how. It really is just following a formula. Works every time. I've impressed many passengers with my skills. ETA: I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I need to parallel park on the left, so I don't know if that would be harder. I imagine it might take some getting used to.
  2. I see now I wasn't clear. He didn't buy pointe shoes. Just those shoes that have all the toes separated out, like this. I guess they're called FiveFinger shoes. Thanks for the concern though. :)
  3. So dh came home from a yard sale. He bought a giant box of books - some of which we already own, some we both really wanted, and then a Necronomicon. He also bought toe shoes for our daughter. But then he bought a BARITONE HORN for me (I played one as a teen, but haven't since). And as I was razzing him for his thoughtfulness, he dared me to start a thread. So what weird/random things did your spouse buy from a yard sale when you weren't looking? (or what weird/random things did YOU buy?)

    Board History

Hmm, maybe this wasn't meant to be. I just went searching for some of these threads, and it appears many were deleted. Possibly because many of them were riddled with celebrity kilt pictures that they had to be taken down for copyright reasons. Or maybe we're just not supposed to bring up some of the unpleasant past. But I'm sure there are some epic threads out there that didn't get nasty or post celebrity pictures. And I still don't know who Phred is. Maybe I will never know.
  5. Is there a board history thread out there? It seems like a group of classical educators ought to understand the importance of preserving history. :) If there is one, where? If not, could we start one please? All you who are familiar with board history could post links of epic threads. I've been around here for years now, but on another thread Phred was mentioned, and I didn't recognize that one. Who is Phred? Were those threads deleted, or could somebody post them? I'm on a tablet now, but later, if there is interest, I'll dig up the threads I remember most, like the cupcakes, shopping carts, or crockpots. And of course the Great Kerfluffle. Maybe even the one where the mom kept getting run of the sidewalk by a stroller lady. I don't remember if Carol from IL's entertaining threads were deleted, I'll have to check. Those would be worth posting too. But in the meantime, who is Phred?
  6. After SOTW....something meatier? Maybe ham? Or steak? Honestly, I don't know how you got SOTW down in the first place (maybe a lot of bbq sauce?), and I see why you are craving meat now.
  7. Thank you! I'm going to go look at that camera now. Do you remember titles of any particularly helpful books?
  8. My phone is fairly new, but also on the cheap side. I think it's a Motorola, but I don't know what kind. It doesn't seem to have a flash, so only outdoor pictures turn out well. Though that just could be that I don't know how to use it properly yet. My camera and phone knowledge is lacking. I have no good reason, but I'd rather not have a fancier phone. I didn't really want a smart phone at all, but for other reasons have one. Anyway, thanks for the camera advice!
  9. It is time again to get a new camera. The old one broke. My phone is not cutting it. I know nothing beyond point-and-shoot photography. I would really like my photos to look at least somewhat nice. Not blurry or grainy or badly colored, even when involving some motion or low light. (Yes I do touch them up a little with my computer, but I'm not an expert, and there is only so much touching up I can do.) So what do I look for in a camera? Any suggestions of a particular camera that someone with little experience can use that won't break the bank? And what about my photography skills. Anywhere I can find basic, helpful information on taking good pictures? Thanks :)
  10. I haven't read it in a while, but I thought he wanted to, but she got away. Hmm, maybe I ought to reread it.
  11. We like going out for breakfast on their first day.
  12. No More Discovering Mathematics!!! Good luck enforcing that! I think mathematics will continue to be discovered no matter what rules you give the mathematicians. I would think a classical educator would encourage discovering mathematics in their own home rather than outlawing it.
  13. I forgot about that! I did it a few times as a kid, but usually couldn't be bothered with the extra step and just suffered with wet socks all day. Some of my friends always did though. That or plastic newspaper bags.
  14. Dumb question about hair cuts, gasoline and kids in college. I know college kids can be dumb sometimes, but I hope they know better than to try the gasoline (and presumably fire) method of cutting hair.
  15. I had a good friend who came from an arranged marriage culture that immigrated to the US. She told me that about half her friends and family married for love and the other half had arranged marriages. She was one who dated and married for love. She said that with her friends and family, the happiness in marriages and rates of divorce were pretty much the same for both groups. I know it was only anecdotal evidence, but I found her observation interesting.
  16. post c25k day 1 done. :) I wasn't feeling too motivated to keep going, but last week I started an audiobook that I only let myself listen to when working out. It's getting interesting, so now I want to jog every day. :)
  17. Last February we went to Disneyland. It was wonderful. If you don't count visiting family out of state, tagging along with dh for distant job interviews, or the occasional camping trip, that was our only vacation ever. Dh and I didn't even go on a honeymoon.
  18. I just got back from w9d3! I can't believe I finished! Keep it up if you haven't finished yet. You can do it!
  19. I did a 5K on August 1, and I think that'll be good enough for me this year. I'm just happy that I can jog for 30 minutes without stopping. Though with school starting up it's going to be hard to find time. I'm putting my big kids in public school this year, so nobody will be home to babysit the little ones, and I really don't like waking up early or staying up late to jog. Oh well, I'll figure something out.
  20. My mom came to visit last week, so I didn't run. Week 9 day 1 done today.
  21. I didn't know airplanes aligned! I'll go look into that. :)
  22. I've seen some credit cards that can be used on any airline. Are the ones tied to specific airlines better? The problem is that I'm not quite sure which airline we'll be flying on the most. And due to our location, it's likely we'll be taking different airlines for different legs of the trip. If it works just as well, a card that works for any airline would be lovely. BUT I don't know enough to know if those cards are somehow not as good as the others.
  23. We recently moved across the country from family. It would take us 3-4 days to drive to see them, so we now need to start navigating the world of airline discounts. Are airline miles really useful? If so, what's the best way to get them? I did a few google searches, and it looks like there are several credit cards with airline points. Would it be a good idea to get one, use it for all our regular shopping, and pay the balance every month? (We're good at budgeting, no worries about getting into debt from something like this). If so, what should I look for? Obviously no annual fee, but is there anything else to watch for when picking a good one? Or is there a better way to save money on airfare?
  24. Not EO either, but this is almost exactly what I believe. Thank you for expressing it. Maybe I just don't get into enough discussions of Christian theology, but I was under the impression that this was a fairly universal view of Christ's sacrifice. Until this thread I'd never heard of God killing Jesus, but always Jesus conquering death through willingly giving up his own life.
