  1. My best story...

Ds 1 was 3 years old.  Dh had not worked in several months because of El Nino storms, and I was a full time student. We had no money to buy extras, just the gifts that my mom insisted on helping us buy.  My beloved little sister was visiting from Washington, and we were out picking up something from the market before it closed.  As we drove by the tree lot, she asked what our tree looked like this year.  I explained that we had no tree, no money to get one.

She pulled over to the curb, made a u-turn and headed back to the tree lot in the market parking lot.  The gate was locked, and my sister pulled on the gate to get the man's attention.  He said he was leaving, closing up for the evening.  My sister insisted that she needed a tree for her little nephew.  The man looked at my sister, said "If you can climb the fence, take any tree you want.  I'm out of here."

My sister hiked up her dress, scaled the fence in 3-inch heels, picked out a tree, climbed back over and hauled it to the car.  "Every child needs a Christmas tree."

I got home about midnight that night, and dh figured out a makeshift tree stand, both of crying the entire time.  We decorated with what we could find, lots of candy canes and paper chains that ds had made for the holidays.

The next morning, he walked in, saw the lighted tree with presents, overjoyed.  "Santa still found us.  And he brought me a tree.  It's just what I wanted."  He pointed at every ornament, light, etc. and shouted "I love it!" Ds napped/slept underneath the tree every day until it was time to toss it.  He called it his Santa tree.

This story is one of our best memories of Christmas, simply because of my sister's actions and ds's joy.  My sister passed away 5 years ago, but this is the first story our family always talks about at Christmas dinner.  She was/is one of the most amazing people I know.

  2. We took my mom some food and I was able to get her to eat!  Score!

Dh and I went to the mall (shudder), in and out of Macy's within 30 minutes, got everything we needed.

Dinner smells delicious (Italian beef in crockpot), serving on French rolls, salad, brownies for dessert.

I recorded Hallmark movies to watch while baking this evening.  Still unsure about church...drive wiped dh out.  Need to wrap the gifts we bought...

    Have a blessed evening!

  3. Good Christmas Eve morning!

I just got back from the grocery, no heavy whipping cream.  After coffee, I'm off to find some.

The rain has been non-stop for 24 hours, some debris flooding in some areas.  Dh has offered to drive me in his all terrain vehicle so I can see my mom.  We have always spent Christmas Eve together, last minute shopping, wrapping, baking, listening to Christmas carols.  Dh even offered to brave shopping so the kids have their traditional pajama pants for Christmas.

    To do:

    • shower, dress, coffee
    • visit with my mom
    • shopping
    • gently coax dd to help me make some Christmas goodies for her brothers
    • Italian beef is in the crockpot for sandwiches
    • hopefully watch some Christmas movies, play a game?
    • not sure about Christmas Eve services, may do online

Blessings, and have a great day!

  4. Took 4 hours to get home with the rain and traffic, but I made it!

Sorry about the ingredients, Scout.  I hid mine in a cabinet I know no one looks in this time.  So far, so good.

    Amy, glad you arrived safely!

SKL, yikes!  Hope it's figured out soon.

Hope that everyone has a lovely evening!

  5. Good morning, all!  Amy, praying for safe travels!

I'm off to visit my mom again, hoping to beat the heavy rain.  She is doing okay, but definitely not with it, if you know what I mean. I'm hoping she is able to carry on some conversation today.

    To do:

    • visit with my mom
    • stop and pick up a few more gifts
    • forgot to put pork chops out yesterday, so crock pot bbq pork today
    • try to catch up on some paperwork
    • vacuum
    • read, relax, watch some football?

    Have a great day!

  6. Good morning, all!

My mom's surgery did not go well.  It went from a 2 hours tops procedure to Dr stepping out to call me several times.  Everything they tried to do fell apart, so they went with an alternative that will require lots of extra care.  She is upset, on lots of pain meds, will probably understand more of what happened today.  Dr said she should be able to come home in 2-4 days, given how well she adapts.  In the long run, it is probably the best outcome for her.

    To do today:

    • coffee
    • drive, visit with my mom, possible meeting with team to learn care routine
    • maybe pick up a few gifts on the way home, finish some items for Christmas dinner
    • more coffee, lesson plan
    • pork chops and bbq sauce in the crockpot for dinner...maybe make some cookies
    • read, relax

    Have a great day!

  9. Back home, good visit with mom, surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.  Only slight irritation with siblings, who wanted to know who would care for her when she came home.  Um, us?  Like we have been for 10 years?  Sigh.

Enjoying a quick session with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I, until dh comes home with dinner.  After that, probably football, relax.

    Have a good evening!

  10. Good morning, all!

We will go visit my mom today, so planning to leave earlier to miss traffic.  It took me 2 1/2 hours to get home yesterday.  Part Christmas traffic, part signs urging people to get their booster shot. There was a road sign about every 15 miles.  Sigh...

    To do:

    • visit with my mom
    • maybe find a place with sourdough starter, make a gift basket for dd.  We are trying to find things to get her out of her room.
    • plan Christmas meal, tentative
    • ds comes home today, so might have to do an airport pickup, depending on other ds's work schedule
    • clean kitchen, vacuum, dust
    • pack bag for hospital visit tomorrow for mom's surgery (charge Kindle, load it with books, iPad, notebook for planning, snacks)
    • watch some football, try to relax

    Have a great day!

  11. Good morning, all!  Happy Saturday!

@mom31257. Your family celebration sound like so much fun!  Enjoy yourselves and this special time together.

math teacher, curious about the Christmas stories book...

    To do today:

    • coffee, make more for the drive
    • visit with my mom (I cried when I left yesterday.  She said all of things people say when they think they aren't doing well).  Dr assures me she is just tired from all of the procedures, pain meds, etc.  I might grade while she sleeps, not sure...
    • I'm going to try and pick up a few gifts on the way home as I have done zero shopping between dd, dh, and my mom's medical issues
    • Trader Joe's for some quick meals, a few gifts
    • more coffee
    • clean off dining room table because it is now the designated dumping ground for everything
    • pay bills
    • not sure about dinner, probably something from Trader Joe's, salad, bread for everyone else
    • read, relax

    Have a great day!

  13. Thank you all for the well wishes/prayers.   The surgical team called, cancelled her surgery.  She has some issues going on, and they need to treat an infection before they can operate.  They think Sunday, Monday at the soonest.  She is very tired, on heavy pain meds.  I just don't know what to think right now.

Finals are over, still need to grade, making it my top priority for the next two days.  I think dh will go pick up something for dinner.

  14. Good morning, all!  Today is the last day of finals, so I'm looking forward to focusing my energy to family care over the next week. My mom is still hospitalized, goes in for surgery today.  Our weather is still cooler than normal, actually feels like winter for a change.

    To do:

    • school, finals, straighten classroom
    • hospital to be with my mom
    • pick up dinner on the way home
    • try to sleep

    Have a great day!
