Is this politically incorrect?
Attila the Honey replied to aggieamy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I am Mohawk, grew up with it being called "Indian style" but I much prefer "cross legged". -
Online Insect Guide?
Attila the Honey replied to happi duck's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don;t know of one, but that would be so awesome. -
Anybody else NOT doing Mother's Day?
Attila the Honey replied to regentrude's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We are very low-key, also. We did go out to lunch to my favorite Indian buffet, but other than that we just spent the day together at home. Dh cleaned the kitchen. :001_tt1: I am probably outing myself as a total weirdo, but my favorite part of Mother's Day is going to the flower warehouse dumpster the following night and getting tons of free roses and potted gerbera daisies. Last year dh went alone and when I woke up the next morning he had put 18 dozen long stemmed roses in every vase and container he could find. I am going tonight with friends! -
What race are you...? Are you sure?

I am Iroquois Indian. I am positive. :D -
Parent Directed or Child Directed Education?
Attila the Honey replied to WIS0320's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Child-directed. My dd is 7.5 and does play pretend a lot, but I think that's a good thing. Besides that she's very into Ancient Egypt, insects and arachnids and anything creepy crawly, and she wants to learn "all the math there is". We went through a few months of parent-led learning and it didn't work for us at all. -
I don't believe things are that much worse now, I believe we just hear more about it from the media. My grandmother was born in 1906 in a tiny village in Germany and told me stories of a neighbor that liked to touch small children. Her father was a police officer that was murdered by a gang of teenage boys. Bad stuff has always been around. My dd is 7.5 and she's fairly free range. She's allowed to ride her scooter around the block with her friends (to be fair I can see her practically the entire time). We live in a quiet neighborhood with a ton of kids and a big park outside our front door. I know the neighbors and they know us, and we all watch out for each other. She's allowed to go in the park or any of her friend's front yards if she checks in once an hour. She has to ask if she goes in any backyards, or inside any homes.

How do I teach dc how to tie their shoes?
Attila the Honey replied to NCJessieRN's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you for asking! My 7yo is trying to learn but it's slow going. Check the library, there are books about tying shoes at ours and they seem to help. -
Is Morning for L/A and Math so crucial?
Attila the Honey replied to WIS0320's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My dd is anything but "sharp" in the morning, so we do most of our subjects after lunch and in the evening. Mornings are reserved for playing. :) Do whatever works for you, that's the beauty of home learning! -
Same with Math Mammoth. I was wondering why they were starting her out with "4.5 inches" and "2.75 inches". :tongue_smilie:

Are Brain Quest workbooks easy for their grade?
Attila the Honey replied to Attila the Honey's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
thank you for the compliment, chiguirre! Unfortunately, we don't have a homeschooling store here. Wow. Such thing exists? I'd be willing ot make a roadtrip to find one. lol She just says they are "fun". One thing I know she loves to do is read a paragraph (or a sentence) and find the misspelled words. Or really any kind of "correcting", and I think BQ contained some of that. One thing I think that helps is there aren't may problems per page and a lot of cute illustrations. It's less overwhelming for her. Honestly, the main thing she might like is just that it's NEW and she's sick of looking at the same books everyday. -
You can see lapbooks in action on youtube, that might help you understand them! Just go to youtube and search "lapbooks".

Dd is doing first grade and she really fights when it is time to do phonics, spelling, and language arts. I picked up a Brain Quest 2nd grade workbook and she blew right through those subjects and said it was fun! I am wondering if she's just bored with 1st grade materials because it's too easy, or if there is just something else about Brain Quest that makes it fun? I am trying to decide if I should ditch the 1st grade spelling and phonics books (that I JUST bought a month ago LOL) and buy 2nd grade supplies?
