  1. I am Mohawk, grew up with it being called "Indian style" but I much prefer "cross legged".
  2. I don;t know of one, but that would be so awesome.
  3. We are very low-key, also. We did go out to lunch to my favorite Indian buffet, but other than that we just spent the day together at home. Dh cleaned the kitchen. :001_tt1: I am probably outing myself as a total weirdo, but my favorite part of Mother's Day is going to the flower warehouse dumpster the following night and getting tons of free roses and potted gerbera daisies. Last year dh went alone and when I woke up the next morning he had put 18 dozen long stemmed roses in every vase and container he could find. I am going tonight with friends!
  4. Child-directed. My dd is 7.5 and does play pretend a lot, but I think that's a good thing. Besides that she's very into Ancient Egypt, insects and arachnids and anything creepy crawly, and she wants to learn "all the math there is". We went through a few months of parent-led learning and it didn't work for us at all.
  5. I don't believe things are that much worse now, I believe we just hear more about it from the media. My grandmother was born in 1906 in a tiny village in Germany and told me stories of a neighbor that liked to touch small children. Her father was a police officer that was murdered by a gang of teenage boys. Bad stuff has always been around. My dd is 7.5 and she's fairly free range. She's allowed to ride her scooter around the block with her friends (to be fair I can see her practically the entire time). We live in a quiet neighborhood with a ton of kids and a big park outside our front door. I know the neighbors and they know us, and we all watch out for each other. She's allowed to go in the park or any of her friend's front yards if she checks in once an hour. She has to ask if she goes in any backyards, or inside any homes.
  6. Do you have a favorite art website? I am looking for both creating art and art history. It seems like there must be a million, but I am not finding what I need. THanks!
  7. I joined 5 days ago! Good luck to everyone. :grouphug: Just to reiterate - the calculator won't tell you how many pts dh can eat. Have him go to a free 1st meeting and get the materials.
  8. Thank you for asking! My 7yo is trying to learn but it's slow going. Check the library, there are books about tying shoes at ours and they seem to help.
  9. My dd is anything but "sharp" in the morning, so we do most of our subjects after lunch and in the evening. Mornings are reserved for playing. :) Do whatever works for you, that's the beauty of home learning!
  10. Same with Math Mammoth. I was wondering why they were starting her out with "4.5 inches" and "2.75 inches". :tongue_smilie:
  11. thank you for the compliment, chiguirre! Unfortunately, we don't have a homeschooling store here. Wow. Such thing exists? I'd be willing ot make a roadtrip to find one. lol She just says they are "fun". One thing I know she loves to do is read a paragraph (or a sentence) and find the misspelled words. Or really any kind of "correcting", and I think BQ contained some of that. One thing I think that helps is there aren't may problems per page and a lot of cute illustrations. It's less overwhelming for her. Honestly, the main thing she might like is just that it's NEW and she's sick of looking at the same books everyday.
  12. You can see lapbooks in action on youtube, that might help you understand them! Just go to youtube and search "lapbooks".
  13. Dd is doing first grade and she really fights when it is time to do phonics, spelling, and language arts. I picked up a Brain Quest 2nd grade workbook and she blew right through those subjects and said it was fun! I am wondering if she's just bored with 1st grade materials because it's too easy, or if there is just something else about Brain Quest that makes it fun? I am trying to decide if I should ditch the 1st grade spelling and phonics books (that I JUST bought a month ago LOL) and buy 2nd grade supplies?

  15. Mine is simple. I took a binder and put printer paper in it and drew a line across each page. I started at 5000BC and went to 400AD in 100 year increments on each page. Then, as dd and I read about ancient people we add them to the correct page in the binder. You can either use short written biographies and insert them in the correct place in the binder, or write the name on the correct page. We do both.
  16. Thank you so much, this is exactly what I wanted!
  17. newbie question: Can someone explain the difference between 'spiral' and 'mastery'? I really like MM, mostly because it's afforable and my dd is doing really well with it. I agree that sometimes there are too many problems on a page, in which case we skip that which is unnecessary.
  18. We did a lapbook for SOTW chapter 4, The Old Kingdom of Egypt, and dd loved it. Now we are on chapter 5 and I want to make another lapbook with her but there just aren't many 7 yo friendly resources on Sumer and the Akkadians out there! Has anyone made a lapbook of that chapter, or does anyone know of a good online resource where I can get images and topics to print out?
  19. Another vote for Math Mammoth, at least for Time. We haven't done the other topics yet but we will be soon and we will be using MM.
  20. A tote for all our non-book school supplies like pencils, erasers, the pencil sharpener, crayons, markers, scissors, glue. After spending too much time gathering our supplies every morning I finally got smart and put them all together in a tote that only comes out when we homeschool!
  21. That is really adorable. Sounds like he's doing great!
  22. I am also a fan of FLL. Before we started I thought I'd skip the memorization because I wasn't convinced it was worthwhile, but dd LOVES the poems. I am so glad we don't skip those lessons now because it's so precious to hear her in her room saying, "Brown and furry..." to her pet cat. ;)
  23. We do seatwork for about 2 hours, reading on the couch for about an hour and a half throughout the day, and our science labs and Story of the World activities about 2 hours a couple times a week.
