  1. Thank you for your words of advice and experience! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  2. I will check out the Facebook group. Also we have dropped Sonlight science. We still have the books! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  3. Thank you for this! So, NL 1 is set to arrive tomorrow! I think we will just go through it rapidly. My Daughter actually enjoys doing work below her level, although I do require much more from her in her main schooling, but she finds it fun. Going through the vocabulary for even level 1, I don't think she can give me the science behind them. I let her look at the word walls for both level 1 and 2. She said she wanted to start with 1. Which is great because that helps my son. That is the highest level he can do right now with writing and reading levels. I hope to get all the levels in before her 8th grade year or during. She will have other science supplements too. But we will see how this all plans out. It seems that NL has a good resale value, am I right? That is, for all the non-consumables, right? I was thinking I would sell all of those items after each level, so that some of those funds can go into purchasing the next level... Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  4. I appreciate all the input and advice though! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  5. So, we bought RS French Levels, b/c my daughter was begging, with glee and excitement over it. And even gave some of her hard earned money in a business she started for it, too. Since it is "only" $199, we did it. Did it fully aware of all its weaknesses! And plans to do more with it too. As in using duolingo, and other resources as needed. I wouldn't have paid more for it though. It is a unique situation that we wavered on for a time then just went for it last night. I know the sale ends tonight at midnight. 6. That is good info, thank you Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  7. We are considering taking the plunge into Rosetts Stone for two languages. The sale is urging us on. BUT How often is the homeschool version on sale? Will another one probably happen before the calendar year is out? Is it every spring? Or what?
  8. I am going to use it levels 1-5 for my current 2nd and 4th graders Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  9. Yes, what lexi said! Level 5 is supposed to be ready for 2017-2018 school year, I was told. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  10. Well! We have decided to go to Nancy Larson Science, having done Sonlight science, and still are finishing up levels A-C. We are staying with Sonlight for their core/literature/history Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  11. That Is what I will do then. Thank you! I should just got with that and move on probably.... Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  12. But! We have not used any part of FLL 4 yet. ;).... Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  13. I have all of them. Haha. That's the problem maybe. Makes it harder to decide. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  14. Thanks guys. Grammar has been quit the stop and switch ride for us. I won't go into the details. Long story. Right now after reading your posts and thinking more I realize we can do several options. Skip 3 and go to 4 because I was thinking she is in 4th, and that maybe I want to fit/wanted to fit that in before grammar 5 (that I already have). But now I'm thinking why do that? Why not just finish the rest of FLL level 3 and finish the rest of Hake 4 and skipped FLL 4 entirely. Sigh. Thoughts either way on that bit? Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  15. This is an old thread...but can someone clarify... are FLL 3 and 4 really the same for the most part? it is a bit confusing it seems someone did mean WWE levels 3 and 4 instead?
  16. we JUST started our school year, we are at about lesson 50 or 60 in FLL 3. Can I skip to FLL 4? Will be following with Hake 5 next year. comments? concerns? good idea? bad idea? or really doesn't matter?
  17. I don't know the difference in the additions but I have referenced this section of the website on several occasions to look at the themes for each book. I put in bold the sixth grade theme below. http://www.hakepublishing.com/grammar-and-writing.html "Students Also Learn History, Literature, Science, and Art Embedded in the examples and exercises is Core Knowledge® content from other subject areas, so that students learn valuable facts while developing their English language skills. Each grade level of the grammar textbook contains age-appropriate references to art, music, literature, poetry, science, history, and geography. In addition to the Core Knowledge® content from multiple subject areas, some of the books also have a special emphasis. For example, the fourth grade book focuses on animals and insects; the fifth grade book concentrates on the unique characteristics of the fifty states of the United States; the sixth grade book mentions a wide variety of Core Knowledge® facts that every American should know; the seventh grade book contains many literary terms in addition to Greek and Latin roots; and the eighth grade book highlights U.S. history and the U.S. Constitution. "
  18. What levels would you use side by side in one with the other? I have questions for my two children: 1. Background for question: I am using both with my, 3/4 done with 3rd grade, daughter. She is almost done with RS 2nd edition level C and she is somewhere in the middle of TT level 4. I keep getting a feeling that she is behind... but maybe she is fine...? she tested at a 4th grade level on her 3rd grade TerraNova test a few months ago, and that was when she was only 1/2 way through 3rd grade. (long story but we had some family emergencies happen this year that got us behind so we have been working through the summer, and will work through next summer as well, on the basics) Also, as of note, that was the weakest area of her testing...all other areas were many years ahead. I'm not complaining...i just know that that was her "weakest area" but still ahead in scores. Question #1: If she stayed at her current pace, moving forward is that a good pairing with levels btwn TT and RS Math? does it matter? does she need to pick up the pace, or do we need to do math 5-6x a week instead of 4x to move farther ahead? I hate that she is still only in level C (considered a 2nd grade program when she is supposed to be starting 4th grade!) Any guidance regarding this would be helpful. Also, I'm finding that 30 minutes for RS every day we do it is sometimes not enough, so we are not always getting to a full lesson. do i need to extend this time or just do more days? These are questions i'm asking myself. 2. Background for question: My son has only used 1/2 of horizons math K and is only 20 or so lessons out from finishing RS 2nd edition level A. He has newly turned 7 and is halfway through 1st grade. He is "supposed" to be beginning 2nd grade this fall, but as i said above, we got behind due to family emergencies. but now that things are settled i want to work to get them gradually to where they need to be... Question #2: Any tips on getting him to a higher level? just work a few days a week more? at what level would YOU begin TT 3 in relation to RS2nd edition levels? Would you not begin TT3 until he was at a certain lesson in RS level B or does it matter? could i begin now at the tail end of RSA? Final comments: I'm trying to rest all of this in my mind so we can work towards our goals each day from a state of rest... My son is young, so it is hard to tell, but he has many signs of being scientifically/mathematically able and strongly interested to go into that sort of field, and i want to give him years to do advanced math at an earlier age, if he is ready. I believe in laying a strong foundation and adding to it when they are ready... i dont' want to push, but i also don't want to linger over a level that can be moved forward. My daughter I want to also give her those same chances if she is inclined and i don't want to remain "behind" if we are... Also, I really like using both RS and TT for at least my daughter but possibly my son too. I like knowing they can still do math daily or consistently even when I may not be able to actively teach them. I want them to be at grade level if not a year or so ahead. I want RS and TT to compliment each other. the conceptual, mental, and vocabulary, as well as the traditional/review and self teaching. I really like how both work together. I know you don't NEEEED both. Lastly, they also both play DreamBox and My daughter us using FlashMaster a few times a week for multiplication facts. TT, DreamBox, etc are also programs that keep them busy while i'm working with the other in RS...so in essence we have our "Math Hour" together. If i do the line up of when my daughter, for example, will reach pre-algebra it doesn't SEEM like she is behind...but the fact that she is about to begin a 3rd grade math level in a program when she is beginning 4th grade FEELS behind...and i either need a strong and lasting assurance that they are not behind and why or a plan to move the rudder of the ship so we are heading in a better direction. Line up for reference: 2nd gr - RSB - TT3 3rd gr - RSC - TT4 4th gr - RSD - TT5 5th gr - RSE - TT6 6th gr - RSF - TT7 7th & 8th gr - taking two years to complete RS Geometry with Pre-Alg TT and/or VideoText? Is that how it works? ETA: Also, at this point i don't HAVE to also include TT for my son... it has just been such a good combo for my daughter too... right now he is doing dreambox learning while i'm doing RS with my daughter. I really like approaching math from different angles but still following a curriculum (as apposed to jumping around too many other options, as I did with my daughter the first few years of her math. And if I do begin TT at a certain point, would it be BAD or negative to learn a certain concept before a certain concept is introduced in RS? My daughter had a different experience, so this possible issue is new to me.
  19. Good to know! Thank you. I am very excited. I'm looking forward to using it with my son, currently entering 2nd.... each day I am loving this curriculum more and more. Surprisingly b/c as a homeschooler in middle school and high school, I HATED Saxon Math...now I have a different opinion. :) Although... maybe I am so drawn to the Grammar and Writing because I was so deficient in grammar growing up and am now wanting to improve my writing and grammar skills as an adult.
  20. Thank you all. I enjoyed reading this thread. Also... hear a year later... any word on Hake 3 coming out? I had emailed them about this last year as well...
  21. This is wonderful to hear! Do you think having a rhythm of doing NL 2-3 days a week in a row, or every other day would be too spars to do only twice a week? I'm wanting to pair it with Sonlight science and wanted to see how doable it would be...
  22. How long do your Nancy Larson Science lessons take? Does it differ with each level?
  23. I know that this is an old thread. Forgive me. We are using Sonlight science A and B and in December will be doing Science C with a 2nd and 4th grader I'm considering doing NL Science 1 quickly followed by 2 with both of them, together, knowing that it may be SUPER easy for my 4th grader...but I am LOVING the idea of the review, vocabulary, and scientific method, but don't want to leave behind SL science.... Do you think one could do both? How long does NC Larson Science take a day? I would want to go for a quicker lesson, for example do the review sheet the next day...unless it is so quick we can fit it in the same day... Ideally we would only spend about 30 mintues or so on science a day 4-6 days a week.... Thanks for any feedback. would love to hear how it has gone with the posters... and what is recommended to move onto after NC Larson science 4th level?
  24. I am curious... what did you end up going with after WWE3?
