  1. OMG! i have THE EXACT the same son as you!! I am also thinking about sending him to K next fall and he is doing 1st grade with me. He turned 5 in Sept and finished K level reading within 2 months and now in the middle of 1st grade for reading and math. I am thinking if K doesn't challenge him enough then I might just wake him up an hour earlier and do home school work with him on HIS level :) So understanding he might have little challenge in real K i still promote him to 1st grade at home because it will just be waste of time on my part and his part to repeat K. I would love to get in touch with you more because we have similar situation :) Do you have yahoo IM for me to add you?
  2. Instead of buying books i want to try to find some printable sheets on-line for our Math Word Problem drill. Do you have any fave sites?
  3. When DS5 turned 4 i started on Reading A-Z. www.ReadingA-Z.com they have levels from A through Z which A is kindergarten level and Z is 5th grade. There are about 5-7 levels within a grade. Each level is a bit harder than previous. Each level has about 30 books. You pay for the year and download the books to your computer. Each book has comprehension test and some very educational activity relayed to the book. My son (never read before) finished K level in 2 months. We started 1 year ago and now he is in the middle of 1st grade books. I really recommend it. That website (readinga-z) also has some letters sheets and cursive sheets to practice writing. Here is a video of my son from earlier this year - he just started reading on that video. Its a video of the ReadingA-Z books
  4. For me the biggest challenge is to have school time with my DS5 so that my DD2 doesn't know about it. She wants to have school time as well and we do preschool time with her but she wants to do it ALL THE TIME! and When she knows its school time for my 5 year old son she really wants to "participate" and at the end just bothers us. We tried so many things like side by side different activities with her so she can be in our room but that didn't work. So i am doing home school work with my ds5 only when dd2 goes for a nap. Which i wish it was a rest time for all of us including ds5.
  5. Thank you for your reply :) That is also the reason i want to start with level 1. Just for the reviewing everything and keep it fresh in his head.
  6. We do Reading A-Z http://www.readinga-z.com There are about 5 levels in grade and about 30 books in a level. Each book comes with worksheet and some activities, and a multiple choices quiz.
  7. Thank you for the link i would have to check this out :)
  8. DS when he was 4 - "Mommy, I dont like hamburgers because i dont like ham"
  9. Math is a foundation of many things in life like thinking LOGICALLY, finding short solution to a problem, knowing there a lot of choices but you need to pick the right one. Math was my favorite subject when i was little. I am also spending more time on math with my son wanting for him to love math and to know math. Math can be the hardest subject so I teach it young. When you know math it makes things easier :)
  10. How smart is she!!!!!!!!! I loved the part of "boo hoo, boo hoo!" very touchy poem! she did a good job! I would be proud too!
  11. I am "hearing" that I am getting All About Spelling for Christmas this year for my kids :) My in-laws like the idea of giving a gift by parts so on my birthday (a week ago) i got All About Spelling magnets. And i know there would be Teachers book and Student package coming along on Christmas :) So I started reading about this program more and there is a test kids can take to see if they are level 1 or 2 now. My son (he turned 5 last September) took the test (4 sentences) and passed without mistakes - which means he is Level 2 :) But I will still start with Level 1 when the books come :) Just wanted to share :)
  12. My 5 year old son is on 2nd grade for Math as well. I make it as fun as possible. I got him Kumon book to practice the math drills. So this is how i introduced him to addition: 5+2= I always ask him to find a bigger number. Then on top of smaller number he writes the ammount of dots as the number tells - in this case 2 dots goes above 2. So he sees 5 and counts those dots on. I also reward everything with a penny for each correct answer. He did those dots for about 2 days then he realized he can just visualize those dots in his head. So he adds on smaller number in his head. If the problem has all numbers more than 5 then we do different trick 8+7= we do a rectangle - he writes 8 in one corner of ractangle and 2 in another (because 8+2 make 10), so we borrowed that 2 from 7, then he drew lines representing how much left from 7 (which is 5 lines) so he writes 10+5=15 We did this for about 2 weeks now he sees in his head how we split the number so its easier to calculate. At the end of the lesson he counts his pennies and exchanges it for bigger coints like quoter or dime... money counting there too :)
  13. I LOVE kumon books - they now have for 1st and 2nd grade :)
