  1. MANY years ago, as my younger brother was entering puberty, a male friend had told me to be aware that boys will have these bouts of anger for no apparent reason. He said that when going through puberty that they will have rushes of angry emotions and not know what to do about it or why they feel that way. Now that I have my own children and am having issues with my son, I brought this topic up with my husband. My husband says it's not true. He doesn't remember it happening to him and that this guy was full of poo. Looking at how hormones can affect us women, and my 7yr old daughter, and how we can start crying for no reason (or at least the hormones affect some of us that way :-) ), this "theory" makes sense to me. It does not excuse the actions that result from the anger but I am trying to understand where these episodes are coming from. So my question is to the Dad's -- do you buy into this theory? Did you experience surges of unexplained anger when growing up? Have your sons experienced such? Now for Mom's or H.S. Dad's, myself and a friend both have boys that are 9yrs old. We are both having similar issues with our sons. We live 5 hrs from each other so this is not something the boys are encouraging each other to do. Both of our sons have become very disrespectful and ready to battle at EVERY tiny thing. My son will wake up angry, or some days he's in a fantastic mood, then all of a sudden he's defiant, disrespectful, unruly, ANGRY about everything then 30min later he's calm and kind and has no reason as to why he acted the way he did. I even had him answer a 2 page questionnaire on respect and letting him know he would not get in trouble for any of the answers, I just wanted him to answer them honestly. I asked his definition of respect, how to show it, if he knew we loved him, if he felt we were ever unfair with discipline, why he was disrespectful at times, etc... He knows what respect is, he doesn't know why he is disrespectful or at least his answer was that he didn't know why. Is this a phase? Is this something all boys do? Is he just testing me to see when he can take control of his life? He is getting more and more "mouthy" and it's unacceptable! Sure there is plenty of room for improvement in the area of showing me respect from his father, his example, but my husband shows me more respect than his father EVER showed toward his mother and my husband has ALWAYS been respectful to his mom. When my son gets in the disrespectful moods, he can end up without t.v., computer, bike, skateboard, sugar, every single pleasure for a week within 2 hrs. I will give him a warning and tell him it is unacceptable to speak to me or put his hands on me other than in a loving manner (i.e. hug) and if it is done again he will lose whatever matters most to him that day for a specified amount of time. I start with one item and one day. But his behavior continues and so do the restrictions-- all to no avail. So I want to also hear from those who don't have boys that are mouthy, disrespectful, defiant---please tell me how you did it!Please! And if you think it's the hormones that initiate these angry episodes, how do I curb them. How do you teach your child how to manage his anger? Thank you in advance for all answers/suggestions/ideas Leah
  2. I have not had any experience with Asperger's, however, my children have struggled at various times with their facts. They have also, flipped their letters/numbers. My son, almost 9, has started flipping numbers when adding but I have noticed that he is improving now that we switched our math program. Each one of my kids learns differently, but one math game they all love and that helps them with retaining their facts is "Math Mat." If she has ADHD, she may love this game since she gets to hop around on the mat. Also, this (retention, low comprehension) could be just about her learning style not a disorder. If her letter/number flipping is dyslexia, there are methods now to work through it, so be encouraged. My friend's son, was an avid reader, then in fourth grade he struggled with math and started having problems with his reading. He was eventually diagnosed with dyslexia, so she worked with him daily with different techniques. I'm not sure what all she did but last I talked with her, her son is doing great.
  3. I purchased this years ago but lost the first cd and haven't used it yet, so I cannot comment on the use. However, if you decide to purchase it, it is a lot cheaper on another site. Are we allowed to tell others of sales on other sites? Hmmmm, I just thought of that. I just saw it for $135 and for $75 on another site. Just in case we aren't allowed to say the site on this blog, if you would like to know where pm me and I'll tell you.
  4. We had a very similar situation and tried everything that you did. My husband thought it was the compressor. I am trying to remember now if it ended up being the compressor or something else--- anyhow, my Dad is very handy. So we were able to purchase the part online (much cheaper than the local appliance store and arrived in 2 days) and he switched it out. I think it cost us about $250 vs $1000+ for a new one. It's running like a charm. I wish I could remember if it was actually the compressor. I just remember when he took the unit out, and we compared it to the new one, it was a tiny porcelain piece that was broken, so he just switched it out and put the unit back. He found the spec's for our refer online. If you have anyone handy, I would suggest doing that. Hope this helps.
  5. Oh my goodness, how I can relate with you. I have a friend who is always talking about her migraines and how she has to be outside for fresh air and/or still do daily chores in order to "work" through them-- that being in bed, like I am when I get a migraine, doesn't help at all. I always feel like she's implying I'm a big baby and she's has a high tolerance for pain. I always want to tell her that she's just having a bad headache. One day she finally had a real migraine-- light and sound sensitive, nausea, vomiting, she had to call in to get medicine for the nausea. I felt horrible for her since I knew the pain, yet she still calls them all migraines and proceeds to tell me (20+ yr migraine sufferer) when I am having one. What can you do?! :-) Those of us who truly suffer from them know the difference. My kids even know, when mom has a migraine, they fix a bowl of cereal and put on a movie while taking care of little brother until Dad gets home and try their best to be quiet. They can tell the difference between a migraine and a bad headache. When I have a migraine, they do try their best but for a bad headache-- not so much. :-) The nice thing is we can come here and vent to others who understand. :-)
  6. I have been reading about all the wonderful benefits of eating raw ginger on a daily basis. However, I had tried ginger as a hot tea and I don't find it very palatable (too spicy but I do like it heated in rice.) Does anyone out there eat raw ginger on a daily basis? How? Do you slice it and try to chew and swallow? I've read some posts of people who make smoothies-- are they hot? Has anyone tried it for migraines? Does it really work? Thank you.
  7. So many great responses! Yes, I am a Christian and I will discuss the verse in Romans with him. Thank you for responding, I will definitely heed the advice in the posts. Thanks again!
  8. This evening as my son and I were leaving the grocery store and entering our vehicle, I was approached by a woman for money. This is the third time I have seen this woman around town, and the second time she has asked me for money. Both times she had the same story. The first time she approached me, I was with my youngest daughter, and she came at me with a hoody over her head and in the late evening. She looked homeless, and very messed up. The second time I saw her she was in the E.R. waiting room, but she did not approach me for money. Tonight when she approached me, I saw her husband standing by their truck with groceries in hand. She had a cigarette in her mouth and asked for money because they were out of gas and needed to get home. Things are very tight for us, and if I felt she was truly in need I would have given her whatever I had, knowing that God would provide for us. However, seeing that cigarette in hand and hearing the same exact story, all I could think of was that she was taking money that I needed to feed my children. Now, as I write this I should have told her I needed what we had to feed my kids but at the time I just said I didn't have any cash. My son was there and I knew he probably knew I had some cash, so as soon as we backed out I told him I was wrong in lying. That this woman had approached me before and that she was not really in need. Oh, as I drove out of the lot, she and her husband drove away. My ds is 8.5yrs old and he has been lying a lot lately. I have been stressing to him that it breaks our trust every time he lies. I feel like I just set us back by doing this today. I don't know how to remedy this. What do you do when someone approaches you for money that you feel really isn't in need but is just scamming/using you? Now what do I do with my son? I am supposed to be the example and in his eyes I have just told him that lying is ok when it suits us.
  9. My poor dd has smelly pits already. It seems too young to me. I am wondering if it's her diet or just genetics. Has anyone else had this problem so young? Did you find out the cause? I don't want to start her on deodorant, I am going to try having her wipe her pits with vinegar after bathing but I wish I could figure out the cause. I have read articles regarding soy, that it is causing young girls to enter puberty earlier. She was drinking a lot of soy milk in her early years but since reading the articles I have stopped that. Some days are worse than others, and I have not made a correlation to any foods. However, it's all been mental, I haven't kept a food diary which I know I need to start. But until then, has anyone else found out that certain foods have caused their child to start smelling so early? My ds doesn't even smell yet and he's almost 9.
  10. My husband loves planes, so for his 40th I arranged for him and 2 of his closest friends to go flying in a biplane. Does your husband have anything he's always wanted to do? Or what about a sports event? Is his favorite team playing on his bday? Can you get tickets for him and then surprise him with a "special" night with just the two of you? Maybe you could set up the evening with "clues" to receive his gift(s)--- If you don't want to go to the sports event send him a text with "meet me at 123 something st at 5pm" then have his friend be waiting at the gate with the tickets, when the event is over have the friend give him a note and with another clue as to where to meet you for your "special" rendezvous. Hope this helps or at least sparks some ideas. Good luck.
  11. uuuuggh! It's such a helpless feeling to see your children so sick and not know why or what to do. Did he eat anything today? We had a similar virus last year, one by one we all started vomiting. As long as we stayed away from food the vomiting slowed down. But it was a couple of days. I think I would take him in tomorrow, and just comfort him and only give small sips of electrolyte fluids until he's seen.
  12. The great thing about posting on a homeschooling site is that most homeschoolers are Christians and we can all pray. We've all heard the testimonies of people who wouldn't be where they are, as adults, in their Christian walk if it weren't for the prayers of their mothers. We, mothers, can all pray for your son. God knows what your son needs, and who will be a true friend to him. I have started making prayer cards for my prayer time (since my memory is unreliable anymore :-) ) so I will add a card for your son and you. I have read a lot of good suggestions with small youth groups, and mission trips. What about a pen pal? I know that it's not the same as having a friend close by but maybe it will open doors to get togethers at homeschool camps or vacations. Meanwhile, he would have someone his age he could confide in. It sounds like there are several moms on this site that have sons his age, maybe the boys would be interested in starting a pen pal relationship via e-mail. My heart goes out to you. I will be praying for you and your son.:grouphug:
  13. We used to heat the cheerio's up in a pot with butter-- similar to how you make rice krispie treats but without the marshmallows. Tastes a lot like popcorn.
  14. I would definitely call the police, and let you neighbors know that you did so. As all the other people have stated, do not let your dc go over there alone. If it were me, I would only have my husband go over to feed. I also would ask the police what they think you should do about feeding the cat when someone has been there twice already.
