  1. Huh, Khan Academy. My dh heard about them and is really interested. So if I want prime time shows, I can use Hulu Plus [we don't have cable/satellite anymore, just Netflix and Amazon Prime]. That's good to know. But no one knows of a way to get news?
  2. We have a Roku. We keep hearing everyone say how much they LOOOOOVE theirs. We stream Netflix thru it--I like that better than streaming it through our Wii--but other than that.... What are we missing? We've looked at Hulu, but they don't seem to have anything that Netflix doesn't have [we haven't tried Plus; we'd rather not pay more for our screen entertainment]. Hubby would like to get news, but we haven't found any news "channels". We originally bought it hoping we'd be able to stream the football play-off games when my family was here in January, but no such luck. What are we missing??
  3. Thanks for posting this. I haven't read it [and aren't there sequels?]. But I was surprised and a bit disappointed to see that my sister gave it 5 stars on GoodReads, but only gave "Code Name Verity" 4. O.o *sigh* She really is quite an intelligent person. I dunno.
  4. Um, would you like to buy some used FB one-sizes? PM me if you want to discuss.
  5. Random thoughts: I can't stand Q. I LOVE the old series. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes the special effects are... horrendous by today's standards. But, oh, Spock. My love for thee shall never end! :lol I've been re-watching the old series on Netflix streaming, and I can't get enough! Troi is weird. And pointless. Esp. since she's not a full empath like her mother, so her "insights" are vague and random. My bro OTOH always liked her cuz she wore practically nothing. :/ Troi's mother is Nurse Chapel from the old days?! OMG, I never knew that! and which computer's voice? I enjoyed the new ST movie. I wasn't sure I was going to. And the "new" Spock is too creepy from his Heroes character. Oh, I remember something else. Uhura. I'm glad Whoopi was inspired by her. But watching the original, all the women are coddled and treated differently and spoken of... even by Spock... in ways that I find offensive. Uhura is/was great, but still when push came to shove, she was shoved behind a rock for her own safety! But still, love love love her. And Trouble with Tribbles is one of my favorites too!
  6. This happens to me too. When I'm thinking clearly, I make comp files instead of paper lists, and make sure to save multiple times. I also started a sort of journal for lists and notes, so that I wouldn't have sticky notes all over my desk. Course, I still have to "rifle" through the book, but at least I know IT'S IN THE BOOK. Usually. :lol I hope you find your list!
  7. I swallow the kids' soft gels. I can't stand the texture of the capsule. I don't see why that would be a problem.... hope not...
  8. Ugh, it's not available to stream on Netflix either!!! :( I was hoping to use them this year. They are available to get on disk from Netflix... Maybe I'll just buy them.
  9. I don't know if this is in your budget at the moment, but I just bought a groupon for $24 that provides 12 months of meal plans [5 meals a week] based on 20 ingredients a week. I JUST bought it, so I haven't actually been able to access it and try them out, but I'm hopeful that it will help me to not waste so much. She claims to plan the meals so that the 20 ingredients are spread out over the week and all used up rather than going to waste in the fridge. And to provide suggestions for leftovers and things. It's this deal: http://www.groupon.com/deals/the-fresh-20-baltimore-1
  10. For a second, I thought you were talking about the other kind of tick! Have fun, Rivka! Maybe next year..... [i keep saying that *sigh*]
  11. Also, I have visions of doing this, but haven't set it up yet. I wanted to link my overview sheet with individual sheets for each week so I could quickly change multiple sheets. I used to know how to do that in Excel, but I need DH to help me set it up in Numbers.
  12. I use Numbers, Mac's version of Excel, but I think this would all be possible in Excel. I have multiple "sheets". The first sheet is an overview of the year. Across the top are the subjects and along the sides are the weeks. I indicate any weeks that will be "vacation" and any weeks where we're likely to need to go light due to birthdays or whatever. I enter the unit or general topic for the week. Then I have other sheets where I plan out the subjects in a bit more detail. A science sheet to plan how I wanted to use Building Foundations for Scientific Understanding. A sheet for implementing MCT. A sheet for the composers and artists I wanted to cover. A sheet with a cumulative book list for all subjects. I don't have individual sheets for every subject. Then I have sheets for each week where I planned out the specifics of what I was going to cover each week. These I did a week or two in advance. Sometimes I'd do a whole month to six weeks, but I'd often have to do a lot of editing as things got delayed or whatever. My weekly planning sheets changed throughout the year. At first I just listed all the activities by subject so my DS could have some choice. But I found he was "saving" all the "boring" stuff til the end: math, spelling, etc. So I rearranged to schedule individual days out in more detail. A couple months ago I started working on next year's worksheet. It's proving tricky though cuz we haven't finished everything I'd planned for this year, and the summer isn't proving to be as productive as I'd hoped [camps, swim lessons, etc], so we'll see.
  13. I sometimes send email from my iPhone which is even smaller than the iPad, and so my tag line is "Sent from my itty-bitty iPhone so please forgive typos" or something like that. ETA: Oh, and I edited the tag line specifically so people would know I left it on there on purpose.
  14. Kara, I noticed you said a couple times that the weight gain was sudden in October. Did something happen then to precipitate this? Perhaps you should be evaluated by an MD? Sudden weight gain can be a sign of several medical problems. My weight gain has been slow but steady over the last 2 years. I know it's related to weaning. I am highlighting these suggestions for my own memory. ;)
  15. Kara, I hear you. I have lost 50+ pounds. Twice. The first I used a software program called DietPower and the second time I used WW. I've gained it back. Again. Well, most of it. I'm up 35 pounds. Once the younger son started really eating, the weight gain started, and over the last 2 years.... :( Nothing fits. I hate how I look and feel. I looked at LoseIt! again yesterday. And I even started entering my food. And then I got to the cookie I had in the afternoon that was a gift from a neighbor, and then dinner which would have meant somehow entering a custom recipe, and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. :/ I don't want to spend the rest of my life weighing and measuring. And I know people tell me to just man up. But it's hard watching my 6'3" DH eat whatever he wants and weigh 10-15 pounds less than me. I thought maybe just a paper and pencil food-diary where I didn't try to worry about figuring out exact calories but just to visually see what I'm eating in a day might be better, and I might try that. Exercise is hard too. I joined the Y, and I enjoy my time there, when I get to go. But they don't have childcare in the afternoons when it seems most convenient. Ok, I guess all this is to say, I feel your pain, but I don't know the answers either. :( :bigear:
  16. Ya'll are funny! I didn't expect 56+ responses! :lol Thanks! This is basically what I do now: hampers in each bedroom, weekly chore that they be carried down to the laundry room, but I do the sorting. :/ And that's where the hang-up is. Then I try to do at least one load a day, more if I've gotten behind. But I'm thinking of having my elder son start doing his own. It would be great if I could just tell him to throw it all in. I do have some of these, and just bought more. Do ya'll use a new one each time? Or do you reuse? My mom too. When we all lived together, she literally sorted BY color: reds & pinks in one load, blues [maybe greens] in another, yellows, whites, etc. I still don't fully understand how she sorts now. Has something to do with weight and color. Ok, thanks everyone! I'm gonna talk to my dh and the kids about this.
  17. Talk to me about this. I've done it once or twice when the laundry mountain became a laundry volcano, but on a regular basis I take the time to sort lights and darks, and then further into hot wash and cold wash [i do undies, hand towels, dishrags, DH's undershirts, that kind of thing in hot], so 4 categories. Plus I usually separate out jeans/sweatshirts just cuz they're so much heavier/take longer to dry. DH does the sheets and bath towels separately, usually once a week, so that is out of the equation. Sorting is a pain, and often a sticking point. If you don't sort, do you do anything in particular to prevent bleeding of colors onto lights? Do you do everything in cold? What about stained or stinky things? [i have two boys who think clothes = napkins/hankies] TIA!
  18. Where is that? I didn't think that kind of place existed. ;) We were lucky here not to lose power for more than a minute or so, but that is the exception not the rule, because we too have overhead lines [bGE not Pepco though]. There are many in my neighborhood who do not have power though. Hubby was inspired to check our generator though and make sure it is ready to go. It's big enough to run the comps and the fridge enough so things won't have to be thrown out, and can run the furnace [which is gas but has an electric starter]. But I think the lessons have having emergency stuff ready and in a designated space is a great idea. Adding it to my to-do list.
  19. I'm so saddened by the 2 that died in their home. How horrible for them and any surviving family. :'( And the looting and trashing TICKS me off to no end. Except I want to use a different word there, but don't want the mod to have to censor me. :(
  20. Is there an app or website that would allow me to do the following: Create assignment/task lists for my son and I [separately]. For his, I want to put his school assignments, his piano practice, his chores, and other things as they come up. Some would need to repeat daily or weekly [and some of the chores, monthly]. I want him to be able to check them off as he completes them [on the comp or the iPad]. It'd be best if they disappeared or moved to the bottom or somehow visually lessened so they don't hide incomplete tasks. If he doesn't complete them I want them to move to the next day [or however I set it up?] Or is there another way to handle this that I'm not thinking of? He seems to respond well to checklists, but it's so easy in a hand-written list for incomplete items to get lost in the shuffle [and also, I'm bad at remembering to write them out]. Google Calendar has the ability to set up events in sorta the way I want, but they aren't "checkable" and so nothing "bad" happens if they aren't done [i don't really mean bad, I just mean there's no accountability; they don't get moved to the next day or anything]. They have a separate task list, but it's just not quite the same thing. I really want the functionality of both a calendar and a to-do list in one. Does anyone make that?
  21. I hadn't heard before ya'll mentioned it that they suspected arson [and the news blurb I heard didn't mention it, which seems weird. How hard is it to say, "The FBI is getting involved in the investigation because they suspect arson", or something]. That's just so sick. :( What kind of person does that? :'(
  22. I just heard on the radio that they FBI was getting involved in investigating? But the radio never said WHY, or explained at all any further. They went on to talk a little about the fire itself or something, but never elaborated on the FBI's involvement. Has anyone else heard this, or know anything about it?
