  1. Faithe, I LOVED that book! :D The s*xual abuse was hard, but she really is positive and strong about it. She's the type of person that I would love to have as a friend. She's a riot. :D I keep remembering that part where she calls her dad to warn him about being on Larry King and his hilarious reaction. :tongue_smilie:
  2. Although I haven't read this, we LOVED the movie. Dh read the book. He loved it. :)
  3. Sorry, nope. I read this somewhere and I most often read from credible and reliable sources. I never copy and paste my references. :tongue_smilie: You could google that sentence and see what comes up. Like anything, food is far better than supplements. I do take supplements, but prefer to go for the natural source when I can.
  4. Faithe, been racking my brains today. Can't Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg and most of her books - very sweet and light - and quite funny - I love the protagonist - this book is uplifting The Five People You Meet in Heaven - if you're in the mood for a very, sweet and easy read - as are all of his books - Tuesdays with Morrie - and pretty much any other Mitch Albom book – we even got the DVDs of three of his books and really liked them The Geography of Bliss – non-fiction, very insightful and interesting Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl – best self-help book ever, fabulous Positive Thinking Every Day by Norman Vincent Peale – wonderful book of short daily readings. I read this one every morning with my prayers. HTH. :grouphug:
  5. Here's all the info I have. I need to remember to use it more often. I've been slack lately. CURCUMIN, AKA TURMERIC Powerful antioxidant Anti-aging properties Most powerful natural anti-inflammatory #1 anti-cancer spice To be assimilated by the body, turmeric must be mixed with black pepper and dissolved in olive, canola, or linseed oil. All of us should regularly consume a soupspoon (sounds like a lot) of turmeric every day, with a generous pinch of pepper and olive oil. You can use it in your salad dressings, cooking, vegetables, and soups In store-bought curry mixes, turmeric represents only 20% of the total, so it’s better to obtain turmeric directly Because powdered turmeric is a powerful blood-cleansing herb, don’t overdo it. Research has shown that turmeric in capsules is poorly absorbed by the digestive system. When turmeric is not mixed with pepper or ginger, it does not pass the intestinal barrier. Pepper increases the body’s absorption of turmeric by 2000 percent CAUTION: Some brands of turmeric powder and supplements have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals themselves. Make sure to obtain a high quality brand. ANTI-CANCER PROPERTIES Turmeric is the #1 anti-cancer spice Turmeric and piperine (black pepper) can limit the growth of stem cells for breast cancer -- the cells that conventional treatment have the hardest time eliminating. Has been shown to inhibit growth in a large number of cancers – colon, prostate, lung, liver, stomach, breast, ovarian, brain, and leukemia It inhibits angiogenesis and forces cancer cells to die (through the process of cell suicide known as apoptosis) Indians have much lower cancers overall – despite their exposure to numerous carcinogens in their environment, often on a worse scale than in the West Studies have shown that it can kill off cancer cells, even within 24 hours! CAUTION: Note that it is often safest to avoid turmeric during chemotherapy as well as a three days before and after the treatment. This is because it can – rarely, but it can – interfere with some chemotherapy treatments and reduce their benefits. Turmeric regulates estrogen receptors, and helps the body eliminate carcinogens. ALZHEIMER’S AND COGNITIVE DECLINE May reduce the buildup of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease India consumes the bulk of the turmeric produced in the world. They have one-third the rate of Alzheimer's than does the United States (which affects half of Americans over 85) PROTECTS LIVER Regular consumption of turmeric has been shown to protect against fewer lesions of the liver Turmeric acts specifically on bile and also has significant anti-inflammatory properties FIGHTS TOXIC MATERIALS Other studies have suggested that turmeric may actively fight the toxic effects of heavy metals (such as mercury); certain pesticides (especially those that simulate the effect of estrogens); and several other chemical toxins present in our modern environment. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY Powerful anti-inflammatory Some studies suggest it works to ease the pain of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis It may also help with other inflammatory conditions, such as tendinitis, and it may even protect your heart Effective and healthier alternative to many pain medications – Advil, Motrin, Rx drugs IMPROVES DIGESTION Safe and effective digestive aid TURMERIC blocks the mechanisms that break down bone as you age. Turmeric also prevents arthritis by stopping the action of a protein that triggers joint inflammation.
  6. He's a fabulous writer. :D This is the only one I haven't yet read, I think. My dh has read and loved them all and he's very, very picky about what he reads.
  7. Happy 200th birthday Charles Dickens! THE greatest storyteller ever. :)
  8. Faithe, you're most welcome. Hope it helps. Books, like movies, are so subjective. Hard to recommend them to others. Stacia, I did, and much of it is thanks to you! :grouphug: I loved The Housekeeper & the Professor. Lately, I've been enjoying books far more when my expectations are not too high. Secret to happiness in life, I think. Keep my expectations fairly low. Or at least not too high. Loved all these books and then one I'm reading now (Nothing to Envy), I just want to read all day long. :D Very sad subject matter, but I really like her writing style. Non-fiction - North Korea - but so very interesting.
  9. Faithe, :grouphug:. Okay, to make you laugh ... these have been some of my favorites. Can't Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg and most of her books - very sweet and light - and quite funny - not "funny, funny", but just a sweet and light book overall. This is one of my all-time favorites. Funny in Farsi - if you need a nice laugh as well as her other book Laughing without an Accent Confessions of a Prairie B*tch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated – some painful stuff, very engaging, entertaining, lots of humor – loved this book - but more enjoyable if you liked the TV series Dave Barry books Erma Bombeck books - though I haven't read her books, more her articles, etc. HTH. Hope you get over your reading slump soon.
  10. What do you like? Which books did you love the most?
  11. Dh and I both love Dickens :). He's read pretty much all of them. I've read some. Of all the classics, Dickens is our favorite. We have many of the BBC DVDs as well and love those. This week, I got lots more reading done than usual. Much as I love it and I really enjoyed all the books I read, I joked with dh how I probably can't keep this up all year, since we have to buy all our books! :tongue_smilie: I gave up on One for the Money. It failed my 10% rule. I read more than 10%, but just couldn't get into it at all. I read and absolutely loved all of these: Bel Canto - thank you, Stacia! :D The Housekeeper and the Professor Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Stacia, thank you for this one also, I think it was you, anyway. :) Now, I've just begun and am also really enjoying, even though the subject matter is very sad: Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea
  12. I love all of these. :) You've probably seen this thread. I think I over-posted there. ;) If only these quotes would stick in my head, life would be better. :) Here are some more: Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. - Dr. Seuss I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. ~ Maya Angelou If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals. ~ J.K. Rowling There is always something for which to be thankful. ~ Charles Dickens It's the job that's never started takes longest to finish. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien "Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts." ~ Charles Dickens I used to have so many fabulous ones on pinterest, but all my boards and pins have disappeared. I cannot log on.
  13. Mark Laham: Yin Yoga - Front Line Sequence - Mark Laham is my all-time favorite for yoga :)
  14. Stacia, as you know, I love Geography of Bliss. Raw Shark Texts looks interesting. :)
  15. Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Today I did Callanetics: 10 Hour Challenge. I like these very old workouts.
  16. It's been ages since I read Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Like you. I also preferred Pillars - much more :). WWE was good, but not nearly as good, IMHO. No, Fall of Giants doesn't have any use of sadistic woman. Obviously, there are some jerks, but not as painful as Pillars and WWE. I love Fall of Giants, but I also happen to love Ken Follett. Mind you, Pillars is far better than Fall of Giants. Pillars is probably one of his all-time best books, IMHO.
  17. Weight loss? Every time I'm losing weight, my period is very short.
  18. I'm weird and rather anal-retentive ;). I have lists of everything. I made lists of all my clothes categorized according to fit and weight. So at x pounds, I can bring x number of clothes back out from the linen closet/storage to my regular closet. My motivation is being able to fit into clothes that I haven't been able to fit into in the past several months. I've lost 20 pounds in the past month. I'm now at a definite plateau/stall and I hope to lose about 12 more. Relatively easy to lose. Keeping it off is my struggle and unfortunately, always will be. Health is my other motivator. I want to be healthy.
