  1. We kept going and spent a few minutes each day. DH also made up a multiplication board game and played it at night with DS. We'll do the same for DD. The torture of me making them "count by ___" each time they didn't know the fact seemed to be enough motivation. Bwaahaahaa...
  2. It feels like this conversation, which has been reasonable until now, is becoming mean. This isn't directed at any particular person.
  3. What an inspiration!!! Part 2 of the 60 Minutes segment is .
  4. Thanks. I was thinking how much craziness it would be if it applied this school year. I should have just looked it up.
  5. Realistically I would never consider owning one, but I left it open in case one of those solar flares takes out the power grid and/or one of my kids takes up shooting as an actual sport. Oh, and if I move to a more remote area with bears. :D
  6. I believe so. It was called a philosophical exemption. That didn't mean the daycare had to take you, though. That's my understanding anyway.
  7. Yeah, I figured he would but he'd been silent on the matter so I wasn't sure. Is there a one-time delay in it for rising K'ers and 7th graders? Is it in effect immediately or is their a grace period? It's July tomorrow and school starts in August. Doctors are already super busy in the summer with camp and sports physicals and giving kids their regularly scheduled vaccines without spending appointments on unvaccinated kids. I wonder how this will all work. :confused1: My parents had summers off (academia) and we used to travel for 4-6 weeks in the summer sometimes. I wonder if those types of kids will have to get multiple shots on the same day.
  8. Oh I love her writing. Somehow I didn't put it together that she was 78, although that would be obvious if I'd thought about it. I loved her no-nonsense, no BS, hardworking attitude. The education community (and I count homeschoolers in that) owes her a debt of gratitude. RIP.
  9. I think that's true. Assuming Brown signs the bill in the next 11 days, and I think he will, kids who are unvaccinated and are due to start 7th grade in August are in for a slew of vaccines in a short time period. Unless there's some one-year delay in the bill for kids who are currently rising 7th graders that I don't know about.
  10. It's difficult to say without more family info. It would depend on the number and spacing of shots and their boosters, where the family lives, how much they travel abroad, what diseases they have already had, and if there's a family history of problems with a particular vaccine. As others have said, it's best to work with their family doctor or pediatrician.
  11. Colorado Court Rules Use of Public Funds for Private Schools Is Unconstitutional The Colorado Supreme court, obviously. One of the most interesting paragraphs:
  12. I read the relevant statutes for my state and I agree with you. I don't know about other states but I'll defer to you. It's a topic I don't really know anything about. :)
  13. Welcome! :seeya: Low carb and low fat is really difficult. I saw that in your other thread. :grouphug: It takes a while to get into the well-being and euphoria phase. In the meantime you're in the "not enough glucose, not enough ketone usage" phase. Not fun! Your brain is used to using glucose to run and you're body's enzymes are all set up to break down sugars and transport them to the brains to use. When you stop eating carbs, your body suddenly has to turn on its mechanism for using ketones for energy and create enough enzymes for breaking down fat instead of storing it. The body is very efficient; it won't keep these things around if you don't use them. The time to change your factory from using glucose as input to ketones is usually in the range of 4-10 weeks. I don't think you did it that long, did you? Also during that time you'll lose a lot of water so electrolytes are very important or you'll feel sub-optimal. For the taste in your mouth, usually it means you should drink more water. But for social situations, people often use breath strips or Altoid Smalls, which are sugar-free.
  14. Yeah, I think this is right. "By the power vested in me by the state of _____, I now declare you _______ and _________."
  15. I agree it's a thread for another day, but seriously, how many Americans would see this and know it's the flag of ISIS, especially if someone wanted it on a cake?
  16. Yes. I tend to give more weight to the person who says they feel hurt than the person who says their words were not hurtful. Yes, although I haven't always seen it in the U.S. For example, I've seen hatred against the Jews in general in the U.S., but the only place I've seen hatred specifically against Orthodox Jews was in other countries. Until I joined this board I didn't know there was such a modern-day chasm between the Protestants and Catholics and Mormons, I thought of all as simply Christians. I have seen hurtful caricatures of these groups. Yes, I think it can have an effect on their communities. Somewhere a thousand posts ago I said something about how 9/11 impacted my behavior as a Muslim, but not my personal faith. I suggested that people try to understand that the vagaries of the world may change their behavior but not their faith, love, and marriages. I don't understand what you're asking in your last sentence.
  17. I agree. I support the right of the KKK's free speech while simultaneously not denying that it has an effect on the many people and communities they rally against. I believe the victims of the KKK's speech when they say those words are hurtful and harmful. I support the right of anti-gay marriage people's free speech while simultaneously not denying (ahem) that it has an effect on the many people and communities they rally against. I believe gay people and their friends/family when they say those words are hurtful and harmful.
  18. What are you saying, then? Because it sounded like you said your daughter has a legal right to make a choice, which you don't approve of because it's a sin, but gay people do not have a legal right because it's a sin. Or did I misunderstand and you support gay marriage? Maybe I'm missing something. :confused1: I love reading your posts on WTM and I don't want to offend.
  19. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  20. But you seem to agree it would be her decision to make, not yours, even if you believe it's a sin. You can't make that decision for another consenting adult of sound mind. (And would you really want to be able to make that decision for her and have others make that decision for you?) So why do you want to make it for gay people who want to be married? Unless you're against them having a literal license or the benefits associated with being spouses, it sounds like you're opposed to this freedom to make their own decisions because they're gay, not because it's a sin.
  21. Maybe I'm missing something, but what doe this have to do with the right of non-Christians right to get married? I feel like we're off-track or I've lost the thread of ideas somehow. And what about my earlier post about celibate marriages? What do you think of those?
  22. Directing the conversation to CPS is a red herring. I was replying to your quote about "love as a force that is not all about acceptance and tolerance." The government doesn't act out of deep love. My specific question was that while we are able to act out of deep love for our children when we tell them what they're doing is wrong, are we, as private citizens, going to make progress entering other people's homes and telling their children as well? Would it be effective? How do you think people would react? As for the second paragraph I quoted above, when in the world has there ever been a law or ruling in the U.S. that was presented as being representative of all people? The highest national support I've ever seen for anything was maybe 65%. But it is representative of a majority. The June 8 Pew poll showed 57% in favor of gay marriage, 39% against. Even more than a quarter of white evangelicals are in favor. I think dissidents should stop trying to make "decided by 5 unelected people against the will of the populace!!!" happen. It's not going to happen.
  23. nm. Just saw you don't want the Illustrated Guides.
