  1. Yeah, I was afraid of that. I have dropped pursuing AP USH because I found the exam questions to not fit with my idea of what a US history knowledge base would entail. Probably going to have to drop the idea of this course as well.
  2. Digging this thread up from the dust bin. :D I am starting to plan a geography course for next year. In googling the title of one text, I found this thread. I would like to see if anyone has any more opinions. I have read that the Rubenstein book is a Common Core Cscope book, so it is very liberal. That leaves the other two as contenders. I really want to maintain a conservative worldview.
  3. That's it. It's SACS, AdvancED, CASI, and TEA accredited. http://www.thebridgeschool.net/accreditation That alone appeals to me. They offer AP French Language, which I'm having trouble finding. Here are their AP course listings. http://www.thebridgeschool.net/ap-advanced-placement-course-listing Anyone have experience with them?
  4. Has anyone used The bridge school? They are accredited, so it looks promising. I am interested in the French courses, specifically. However, they have many, many others, including APs.
  5. I thought that one required a team. I couldn't find an individual entry option. Also, they all look like projects to make/do/build. Did I not find the right thing? http://www.soinc.org/home
  6. DD would like to participate in a science contest where you answer questions, not build something. She wants it to be independent, not a team. Any suggestions?
  7. Is it quality? Do you think it is secure and safe? camptremblant.com
  8. Thanks, ladies! We are unsure at this point if we will let dd graduate early. If we do not, then we don't want to lose an AP. It's only one, but still! Some of you mentioned SATs. She took the SAT in 7th grade for Duke TIP and qualified for state recognition. Do I need to keep that score on the record? Is there a different way to show that without requesting that score remain? I'm sure she will better the score in the future.
  9. If a student were to take an AP exam at the end of 8th grade, does that count for college admissions? Does it count for the "scholars" level recognition? How does a parent get this to count?
  10. Anyone who has used the BJU geography course, the Mapping the World by Art or Runkle, can you post a comparison? I like Runkle because it teaches physical geography. But, it needs to have supplements with political and social/economic geography.
  11. I like the sneak peeks! I have never used HOD. It looks like this will be the core, which may be more than I need. Can their cores be used just as a course? I also am looking at BJU Cultural Geography. I really like the look of it too! My dd is an avid reader, so I could combine either of these with a literature program (HOD lists BJU, which I like) and add some of the travel readers from Ambleside Online. How would that work with HOD?
  12. Oh, I forgot about the BJU geography course. The Runkle appeals to me because she really hasn't had all that in her studies. General science had a limited study of Earth science. Don't want to hit Govt/Econ. yet.
  13. DD is asking to do something other than "history." Last year she studied American history with a focus on modern times. This year it is Ancients through the Renaissance. She is in angst over doing those again since, "We just did all that." I explained that is all there is to history: ancients, the middle period, and now. LOL! I was thinking of taking a break from our chronological study and having a year of geography. She hasn't had much of that. Yes, we've colored maps every year. But, she's never learned all the other geography stuff. Runkle looks interesting. Mapping the World by Heart looks interesting. It would be nice to include cultural studies from a Christian worldview. It would be nice to have literature match. Separately, I was digging around on Ambleside Online, and their Year 8 term 2 and 3 and Year 9 look like history my child hasn't had as much depth with. So, I could probably sell that for history. Would it be overkill to do both geography and AO history/literature?
  14. Thanks everyone. She's excited about this now. It doesn't seem so insurmountable.
  15. What is the hive's thought on Abeka chemistry? This will be a course that will be followed in a couple of years by AP Chemistry. The student will have only algebra 1 as a math background and will be taking geometry concurrently.
  16. My dd would like to create an electronic device for a science fair project. She needs to learn how to build a small electronics box. Is there an elective course we can use to learn that? She also will probably have to program it with code. What can we use to learn that? Thanks
  17. Wow, that quote was mine. Does that make me famous??? LOL! :coolgleamA: After looking at that study guide, I decided I am not going to pursue AP USH. I haven't looked at World or European History yet, but I suspect I'll have the same issues. Starting next year, what I am planning instead is: Omnibus II in 8th; WTTW from IEW Omnibus III in 9th; Am Lit from IEW Omnibus V in 10th (yes I'm skipping ancients); British Lit from IEW Omnibus VI in 11th; Something for AP Language or Literature (or both????) BJU World History in 12th; World Lit from BJU That will give my dd two credits each of Western Civilization and American History the way I expect American history to be taught. sheesh! One credit of World History. 4 English credits since I won't count the 8th grade English. I plan to include .25 credit in geog. and .25 in art history each year to total 1 each in geography and art. I could easily drop 1 credit Western Civ and 1 of Am. Hist and still have the appropriate number of credits: 1 western civ, 1 Am hist, 1 world history, and 1 world geog.
  18. Thank you! I found a long sample on google books. Looks great!
  19. Does such a plan/book exist? I like A Rulebook for Arguments, but I have no idea how to "teach" it.
  20. Thank you for stating this. My 8th grader will take chemistry next year, then biology, AP Chemistry and maybe two years of physics. (Wants to be an engineer.) This helps me think about how to address overlap.
  21. I actually tried to sign up for Oasis on Wednesday. I wanted a sample of only one chapter so I could actually see the text since there are no samples online that I can find. They informed me that they would only sell me a full copy that I could later return if I didn't like it. Hrmp! Homeschoolers do not have the privelege of getting a sample.
