  1. I am struggling with the idea of the difficulty changing from one book to the next as well. I will look into notgrass. A simple spine might be nice. However out of the three I did find it the driest.
  2. So I’m struggling with my oldest. He really thrives with the handholding of heart of dakota (the boxes that tell him exactly what to do). They are using mystery of history in his next guide. What do you have your dd10 do with mystery of history? Read and ?
  3. I’m not sure about either! The samples both appeal to my kids, but they quickly get over things and it’s drudgery again. The audio of 1 might be nice though. Then I would just read aloud books (not just history related). Or I’ll just stick with what I have… ds12 just finished his guide in HOD and I’m not ready with all the books for the next guide. Thought I would reevaluate. I miss having everyone on the same history cycle. But then again it can be a pain to get them all to sit still and listen.
  4. I think one of these would get the job done for 2 fifth graders and a 7th grader. Can anyone share their experiences with either?

  6. @Green Bean how old is your youngest? This week is going better. DD6- I decided to stick to what I have…
  7. I’d stick the oldest back in rod and staff and call it a day 😂 Probably because all these ideas make my head spin and I don’t even have a newborn. The brain fog post partum was really tough for me for about 2+ years, also complicated by Covid. Do whatever can get done. I vote for Write with the best- I don’t think it is meant to take too long. It is meant for 5th+ since heart of dakota uses it in creation to Christ. Writing strands? Something open and go.
  8. For Berean builders- are you reading the stuff that goes with each lesson or paraphrasing? I found the reading really boring. Just curious.
  9. Thank you. My goal is to work on syllable division with megawords. Is megawords a lot more than the worksheets?
  10. Is the teacher manual needed for megawords 1? I think I’m going to use as a supplement to AAS. Is that too much? Also will have him read aloud to me.
  11. @forty-two what is this cursive phonics thing? I forgot we are doing dictation day by day in addition to AAS. I would like to add cursive but have not chose anything yet.
  12. @SFisher thank you, I think that is exactly where I am at. What kind of difficulty do you have them read out loud from? Or How many words per page do they need help decoding? Independent reading is always on the easier side. We are continuing AAS, likely through 7.
  13. Apologia chemistry and physics young explorers. This one is so different from the other books… you can get a kit for it.
  14. DS10 has finished AAR4. He is working through all about spelling 3. He is doing fairly well now. He sometimes skips small words or suffixes when reading. Guessing still happens occasionally. Can anyone relate and let me know what you did after you successfully finished phonics? Also he sounds a little choppy when reading. I am using a difficult text (original McGuffey reader 3, for grades 5-8) and wonder if that’s not a good idea for fluency. I thought the challenge of working on multi syllable words would be helpful, but he also needs to work on intonation and all that. Maybe do both easier read alouds to me and the McGuffey reader to challenge? He mostly understands what he’s reading unless it’s new vocabulary.
  15. I really need to just stick to what I have…. And just somehow motivate her to peel away from her little brother for a few minutes and do her school.
  16. Thank you countrymum. I brought beyond out with fresh eyes and really do like it. I was trying to do too many other things at once.
  17. Has anyone used this? The library has it, but to do it properly I’d need to buy my own. It says it’s geared for 13+, but I can see it working for my 10 yr old who finished AAR4, but still needs review/practice as well as working on more difficult words. Are workbooks like this common and I just haven’t noticed? It’s fairly thick ~300 pages.
  18. So you skip the history projects, science and all that? I might have to try this…
  19. Yes it sounds similar. So you have a specific time schedule though, not just a routine?
  20. Wow!! Wendy that is awesome… thank you! Is this a time schedule like MOTH?
  21. I’m seriously considering TGTB LA2 for my young 2nd grader. She just doesn’t want to sit still and is seriously struggling with that. She is young for second grade. Tgtb moves faster in reading than AAR which is good since she picks up things easily now. I just want to feel like we are doing something this year that’s also a little fun and colorful. Still doing math with confidence, but trying to condense lessons and have days where she only does the workbook to catch up to the lesson we are on. I also love FLL, but an All in one sounds really nice for her this year. @countrymum what are you doing for history? Just skipping the manual and reading the books? I have beyond set, but it looks like so much, especially since we have other manuals going. I also have Berean science in the beginning which she’d love. @Green Bean almost fell down Tgtb hole again 😂
  22. I also like math mammoth but it took more than 1 level to see the difference it was making. It also helps if I teach the lesson first and do one of the problems with them. Otherwise we have had to back track when one of them were TOO independent. Sometimes a concept is difficult no matter the curriculum, and it can help to pause a chapter and work on an easier chapter rather than slogging through. I haven’t had any children who could skip a lot of problems. I also prefer more color/fun for k-2.
  23. I also love FLL (especially the original combined 1/2 book, it’s also a smaller size which I like). I also skip whatever I want.
  24. I got my book in today. The condition is Much better than I expected. However with exception to the easy chapters, I’m a bit lost. Perhaps I need to do some brushing up on these things myself.
