L'Engle was a devout Christian, and I'd say it's sci-fi/fantasy more along the lines of C.S. Lewis' space trilogy.  The whole series has a lot to unpack and is not for the faint of heart.  Dd19 has read the entire series and loves it dearly. It's consistently on the list of 100 most banned books.

Yep, I'm not a sci-fi or fantasy person either. Hmm, I'm noticing my preference in reading material is rather limited. I might need to work on that.

What time is it there? It's Saturday. Go to bed

A lot of things get pushed to the back burner during the week so we can focus on school. Saturday is my day to get it all done so I can rest (or at least not run around willy nilly trying to catch up on all the things) on Sunday.

I'm reading reviews on a couple of prospective literature books. All the reviews are either completely negative (1 star) or completely positive (all stars), with nothing in the middle at all. Strange. I'm going to see if our local library has them and I'll read them myself.

My library doesn't have either book so now I have to decide if they are worth buying.

How is A Wrinkle in Time? I haven't read it all. Per common sense media, it looks OK. Anything that wouldn't jive with a Christian worldview? I read the first couple chapters and don't like it much but dd wants to read it.

I had to read this in elementary public school and didn't care for it back then, but honestly can't remember why.

It's dark. Alternative dimension type of stuff and witches. I allowed it. Watch the movie for context if you want.

This is likely why I didn't like it as I did not like books that had a dark feel to them. Still don't.

    Good morning!

I am waiting for dd16 to finish her physics test (which I am proctoring) so I can go to Aldi.  Last week they had no sweet potato chips, macaroni, spaghetti, rice, or hamburger buns.  Hopefully things will be in stock today.  I might need to stop by Kroger.

Tonight I will take the two youngest and a couple of friends to a weekend scout camp.    I have no plans otherwise.  I'd better go find my grocery boxes.

    Coffee!

I remember Kroger always being so expensive compared to other grocery stores. I very much preferred Publix. Neither of those are an option here, though.

We have a reaction! No visible bubbles but realized the bottle was swollen. Opened to the pop sound but smells more beer than root beer like though. Hmm. I'll let it sit longer.

I did some research and if I'm reading correctly, the sugar you'll add to the bottles after fermenting is what will do the carbonating, not the yeast. Don't know how much this helps, but it was an informative investigation. I may have to buy a kit for Oldest, if it works well for you. I was surprised to see that by making the rootbeer via the yeast method, the resulting brew will have 1% alcohol, though, so that could account for what you're smelling.

Re my other post. I can't believe no one has made root beer. It's got to be one of the things every homeschooler should do like mummifying a chicken. I'm getting no help here. And still no bubbles.

I love the idea of trying to make rootbeer, but not mummifying a chicken.

Have you googled to see if you can find help with the rootbeer kit? Maybe you'll find others who have used it on YouTube.

You shouldn’t be able to see if I’m typing. I changed my settings so that my name shouldn’t show.

I cannot see when you are typing. I didn't know that was a changeable setting either. I only noticed recently when it started popping up as well as showing me what other members are on each thread in the forum.

  8. I'm reading some of the stories in R&S grade 6 reader. Some of these are very interesting and will lead into some great research and discussion of the time periods they were written in or about! I'm usually very cautious about Anabaptist-specific stories, but the story called The Executioner (an account from the Martyrs Mirror) really makes you think about the time period when being rebaptized as an adult (because they were first baptized as infants) was a criminal offense that was punished by execution!

I absolutely hate elderberry. It tastes like blueberries that hate you.

Elderberry syrup made with local honey is fantastic. My kids absolutely love it. Add a splash to fresh lemonade and it tastes like Snapple iced tea.

    Belated sweet elderberry syrup booyah!
