The ice has melted just enough so that we have a thin sheet of water over the ice so that it's actually more treacherous than ever.

There is a travel ban here except for essential workers. The wind is making it so much worse than just the low temps. We're used to low temps in winter, but 70mph wind gusts?!

Dd13 made a cheesecake for dessert but sadly did not have any graham crackers or other cookies for a crust.  (Because I thought I had gotten a box last week but nope) So she used cheerios and cinnamon Life cereal.  It turned out really well!

That is awesome improvising! Way to go!

I taught mine to form 5 in one motion. Over (to the left), down, hook around. Less pencil picking up and faster. 7 gets a “belt” because I picked up doing that when I lived overseas. I love the one for 8: s curve down but do not wait, climb back up to form an 8 or something like that.

Make an S but do not wait, climb back up to make an 8.

I learned the number 5 as a continuous stroke, too, but the top line was curved like a smile. Middle attempts to start 5 as one stroke because he is used to drawing the letter S. Unfortunately, his 5 ends up looking like an S so I teach the way R&S instructs in order to avoid confusion and I correct him every time so he will remember the correct starting point. He loves making 7s and says the rhyme as he draws them: Across the sky and down from Heaven, this is how to make a 7.

That would be really nice. The closest thing we get to snow is frosty roofs and lawns.

Consider this a blessing. Shoveling the driveway, scraping and brushing snow and ice off your vehicle, and then actually driving in the white stuff is not fun at all. Also: grocery cart wheels do not roll in snow.

No, thanks.  I don't like either.

Snow is best enjoyed from inside a warm home in a snuggly blanket while looking out the window with a warm cup of coffee, tea, cocoa, or cider in your hands. Undisturbed snow is really a thing of beauty, especially if you can see it at sunrise or sunset.

Did you just admit to using boxed cake mix? The horror! 🤣

Yes. I can and do make cake from scratch but this was a special request from Oldest.

Yes, please. A medium snow and a regular coffee for here. Thank you.

Sorry, I can control the size of the coffee but not the snow, much to my children's dismay.

  7. For those who do not know, you can use 2 boxes of cake mix in one 9X13 casserole pan, but do not DO NOT beat the batter with a mixer. Stir the batter with a fork or you'll whip too much air into the batter and regret it when it grows to epic proportions in the oven! I learned this the hard way a few years ago and stumbled back across my notes reminding me and thought I'd share this knowledge with all who may find it useful in the future.

2 ducks in the pond and 3 in the grass. How many ducks altogether? 5

It’s the highly effective way 2nd edition introduced and practiced the fact families.

    That is adorable!

In the ABC preschool set, Middle just learned...

    Down the trunk,

        around a tree,

    Add a branch,

        it's 5 you see! 🤣

What’s all this about duck math?

That's what many people here call the previous edition of R&S grade 1 Math. Instead of counting crayons, ducks were used as the visual for counting. Cute as is it, I won't be using that edition, as I already have the current edition teachers manual.

  10. @Green Bean I'm glad we didn't jump ahead because we are right where we need to be and life is good. Oldest is in the 6th grade book and wow does the mental math kick up a serious notch, this year! Today's lesson was on finding prime factors of composite numbers. Way easier than it sounds, but I totally forgot what this looks like on paper and had to sit down and refresh my memory before going through it with Oldest. I do not ever remember using division brackets upside down, but it makes sense in this application.

Middle is in the preschool series learning his numbers with Youngest helping. We made our own number cards. Each number is underlined (so they don't get memorized upside down) and I drew dots on the back (like on dice) in case Middle doesn't remember or hasn't learned the number yet so he can just count the dots. Youngest picks a card and holds it up for Middle to tell him the number and then Youngest repeats back whatever Middle says. It's too cute.

3 pumpkin and 1 apple pie done.  Harvest corn salad dressing is made.  Apple pie and 1 pumpkin pie and a few other items have been sent away.  Guest bed has been set up.  Spaghetti dinner has been eaten.  Fancy table linens have been found.  Now sitting down.

    What is this?
