  1. My DD gets bored too but doesn't want to do more hands on math like her brothers. She is a workbook kind of kid. She had a love hate relationship with Singapore monotony so we staggered with Horizon. She did singspore workbook and textbook 1a, then Horizon 1 book 1, then back to singspore 1b and she is now finishing horizon book 2. Sometimes she would bounce back and forth between the two for a bit of change. She is my head scratching kid. I just haven't found the "just right" for her that I did for her brothers. I am even considering TT3 just to see if she enjoys it more but gets more interactive math while being independent.
  2. I didn't care for level A and felt like level B covered the material again so I put my kindergartener in level B and it has been perfect. It is a bit weird at first but having stuck with it I absolutely adore it. He begs to do math and is way ahead of his twin who is in MUS alpha and is also much more solid in concepts than his sister who is using a Horizon/Singspore combo. It works. I cannot believe what he can do mentally with math and my husband, who is a scientist, keeps trying to convince me to move all the kids into it. It is teacher intensive but I found after doing the first 15 to 20 lessons we found out rhythm and it is pretty straightforward.
  3. We have used God's Great Covenant and it is really a lovely curriculum with some meat but not too much meat. If you are doing history then Biblioplan is wonderful as well as it schedules the bible among with your history. We have also really loved "What We Believe" curriculum done by the Apologia group. It is an amazing curriculum and perfect at 12yo. It does have a Calvinist lean I feel so worth noting ahead of time.
  4. What worked for us: DD (7): Spelling you see B, her spelling is outstanding right now and I feel I owe it all to SYS. Math combination of Horizon and Singapore. She wasn't grasping story problems and Singapore came to the rescue. When she bounced back into Horizon book 2 she was much better prepared. Abeka language 1, has just been so outstanding. It is thorough and she loves it. First Language Lessons 1, has been a hit with her. She enjoys the time with me when we do it and her speech has also benefited. DS X2 (the 6 year old twins) Abeka language 1. I bumped them both into it half way through the year and it was the best decision. One is reading Magic Tree house now and the other is comfortably reading leveled readers. Math u see alpha and Rightstart math B. I put each twin in a different math based on learning styles. At first it was more work for me but now it is like nothing and I can easily do both. Either math would not work for the other if I reversed them. It is amazing how math is that subject where you really do need to find the right fit. This works and we are sticking with it. Subjects with all 3 that worked: SOTW 1 with Biblioplan Ancient. This was perfect. So so fun and every single one has eaten it up. I am going to be sad to finish it up. Mommy's homemade Africa continent study. We used Draw Africa as a spine, 10 days in Africa game, and Africa geopuzzle to focus on each country. Each week we would draw, trace or label 2 countries and I would get books about each country to read that week. They could be about people, myths, customs, animals, basically whatever we could find. It has been phenomenally successful. All 3 kids can rattle off each country using a blank map and tell things about each one. Eritrea was a favorite and they loved learning about the Mangrove Trees. RS4K Geology paired with Geology Rocks! This was a great science study and we all learned a ton. We did chocolate chip cookie archeology digs, made a homemade seismigraph, grew crystals in egg shells, made sedementary rocks and so much more. It was truly an outstanding time. What didn't work for us: Reason for Handwriting: my kiddos hated it. I thought it was cute but it brought the twins to tears and made my daughter's handwriting worse. We switched to Draw Write Now! and that was much better. All About Spelling:this was too confusing for the kids used alongside Abeka. I may revisit this at later levels as I really like it but it just didn't work for us. Abeka 1 writing. When my DD and I both started rolling our eyes during each lesson I knew it was time to abandon ship. Same goes for Abeka 1 spelling. Just didn't work. Nothing was being retained so we abandoned it.
  5. The Alphabet Series is really beautiful and amazing. There is a book for each state and they cover a good deal of history and interesting tidbits from each state. You can get them used on Amazon and I have found a few at the Goodwill. We are doing US history/geography next year so we are compiling books, a US History Cookbook and State by State cookbook, there are websites of state songs and creeds that work great for copy work, Cantering the Country is a really fun and useful resource as well.
  6. Oh wow! I have been happily using SOTW 1 and my kids love it and I was all set to put my vote behind it and then I listened to the samples of TAN...it seems incredible! I may just need to think about a change for next year ;)
  7. Another vote for RSO here if you like lots of hands on science. It has really been a hit for my kids. I wondered at first how much they were actually grasping but they really show a good understanding for their age. I also picked up RS4K just for some additional reading time with the kids. It has worked well!
  8. I am in the camp of having a 1st grader who loves to write. She is using Abeka language 1 for phonics (and she is currently writing multiple sentences in it), WWE and FLL has also really helped her get a sense of how a sentence feels. I have seen her writing really start to take off with this. However, hands down the curriculum that has helped her the most is Spelling You See. She is currently almost done with B book 2 and for whatever reason, the copy work and dictation each week has been the most helpful. On the 4th day they have the student do some creative writing (drawing a picture and writing some sentences). As the weeks go on her entries on day 4 have become outstanding.
  9. I am new to this board but have been using this curriculum all year with 3 kids. My daughter started with it in their Christian school and then I took over 6 months ago. I started my twins from the beginning with it. I was lucky enough to sit down with a teacher who had been teaching a class with it for many years which was so helpful! I would be happy to answer questions as you go along. I love this curriculum and cannot believe how my twins went from barely sounding out CVC words to reading really well after 6 months. It has been great! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have :)
  10. Hello all, I started homeschooling 6 months ago and have been lurking around this board for over a year. I have a 7 year old daughter and 6 year old twin boys. They previously attended a sweet little Christian school but financially it just didn't make sense to us. My husband and I have two grown sons and honestly, I never saw myself homeschooling but here I am! So far I am loving it! We are from Washington so there is definitely a large homeschool community here which is really nice. I am excited to pick the brains of all you seasoned homeschoolers!
