  1. That is a good idea! Thank you!:D
  2. Thank you! The book is at my library so I have put it on hold :001_smile:
  3. I am teaching a Kindergarten class @ co-op. I am pretty excited about it :-) I used to teach K pre kids and I have missed some parts of it. It is up in the air right now what themes, etc the children will be doing so basically I get to have a lot of input. I am trying to wrap my brain around no board, no center activities (unless I bring them), or toys. Classes are in a church. I think they do have basic art supplies and I get some money to buy supplies. I was thinking about calendar activities maybe........that is big in public school Kindergarten  The children have 2 other classes available to their age later in the day- one is a literature class (prob a craft plus story) and the other is an art class with recyclables or nature so I would not want to duplicate those things. If you taught something similar I would also be interested in your routine/schedule as well as if you know of any curriculum or ideas. I feel like I am not making sense :tongue_smilie:
  4. I am not sure what other posters have said but ds has it bad and the ped said no lotions- creams only.....2-3 times a day, immediately after baths. Keep it up too once the flare ups are gone b/c they flare back up really quickly and often parents stop before it is time (in her experience I guess). I read through the first page. I guess I need to ask about allergies. Is this odd- but ok, so if he has an allergy and this is the only symptom and it is controllable is there any point in getting testing? Do allergies get worse or better as you grow up? Is it harmful for person to be exposed to whatever they are allergic to? Hope that doesn't derail the conversation too much.
  5. http://www.multiplication.com/learn4x4.htm Maybe this one?
  6. Here is another thread for ideas. It is getting harder in the cold. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191271 ETA; We have been watching the letter factory a lot (ducking head)
  7. I would love ot hear ideas too! :bigear: I have a 3 year old who loves his bean box....at 2 he loved to play in the sink. It was messy but quiet. We also did/do school in the bathroom while he takes a bath  Playdough is a huge hit lately. Have you seen those preschool in a bag things? I would like to have them but am too lazy to make a bunch.
  8. The kids will be out at that time...darn! Do you know if it will let me record it to watch when they get home?
  9. But then what would they use to teach the class? They are going to have to have something when 30 plus kids show up in the class.
  10. When I taught we used the old Open Court. We really did love it!
  11. Thank you! The pages are online- Catherine Drown answered my email very quickly! We might try using our own like pp suggested. @ EKS- ds likes it so far but if that changes we might drop that part too.
  12. I bought the cds. On Page 21 on the side it says after we read this section, complete the Romulus and Remus as Children page in your own history of Rome book. What is she talkign about? I swear I looked and all I see is the title page, lessons, glossary, chants, dividers. In the answer key I see answers to each lesson and the other cd is an audio file. Thank you!
  13. Same experience here except we couldn't get it to work after a few tries :glare:. Love this thread! Ds8 wants the game Mindflex.....he really has visions of becoming a Jedi I believe . He asked for it last year too *sigh* but I still think it is a ridiculous price. ANy recs on a good starter set for snap circuits? They look fun!
  14. Thank you both! Traffic did not even occur to me :glare: I will check out that restaurant!
  15. Anyone been to DC on Thanksgiving Day and the next? What are the crowd levels like? Any ideas on where to stay? Thanks! ETA We are thinking of going to the Natural History Museum.
  16. I am not sure how helpful this will be but I have been trying to use some of Charlotte Mason's (I think??) ideas. You have the student study the sentence first. Go over any words you think he/she will miss, punctuation, etc. I tell him he will need to write it without looking and he does actually try to remember the spellings. THEN I read the sentence 2 times and have him write it. If he forgets he can ask me, no big deal but he really wants to be able to just do it. Ds is a terrible speller too.
  17. Anyone create your own set for their children? Would you mind sharing how many of each size you made, what the sizes were, how many connectors, etc? Do you know approximately how much it all cost?
  18. We chose one for the family last year and the children took tuns opening the boxes. That might work.
  19. Thank you all for your insight! It has been very helpful! I feel a whole lot better about his hesitations and inspired to try a few things to get him more comfortable/confident. Thank you!
  20. CAT- this was for elementary. I was in SC. I am not sure all schools used it. I thought it odd (and still do!) bc of obvious issues.
  21. When I taught we gave the same exact test each year. That was 9 years ago (!!) so things may have changed but it was the same test each year.
  22. I didn't want to take over the other post but I also have a question about reading out loud. My ds hates it and cries (really melts down) when I have pushed it. He is 8 and reads well. He has read the Narnia Chronicles, Inkheart trilogy, and many others. One book I looked up said it was an 8th grade reading level. He reads all.the.time. I am pretty certain he understands what he is reading- we talk about it, he makes connections, he asks what words mean sometimes. I do wonder if the harder books he is skipping words but he gets the story line. I only wonder since it is so far above his grade level.....I have no proof or anything :tongue_smilie: I was all set to force it this year because I was thinking it would help with oratory skills and it is just weird. He will not even read to his little brother! I would love for him to do this while I am making lunch :). I even tried to pay him but it was a no go. I think too if it something that he is scared of for whatever reason it would be nice to help him over that. So. I am wondering what people would do. Has anyone been in the situation? Do I let it go until he is older? Push it now? How would you get him to do it? I noticed today he was reading Calvin and Hobbes out loud to himself -stopped when Dad came in the room- and he will read game card type things out loud.
