  1. So, I took DSD17 to the hair salon the other day. She was shocked by the lack of variety in the reading material - magazines filled with celebrities or fashion etc. She wants to do a study of some sort to see what women would read if given the chance. She'd like to supply salons with newspapers (both conservative and liberal), books filled with feminist essays etc. She thought she could develop a short questionnaire for women to fill out. So - what do you think of the idea? Any thoughts on how I can help her carry this out? Thank you! She wants to leave some Mary Wollstonecraft, but I'm thinking it is not accessible enough to the average person.
  2. Yay!!! Thanks for the update! Glad it was a success! I am using Ottolenghi's recipes for chicken and lamb shawarma for my wedding, although I use the NY Times one for the family sometimes. In fact, you inspired me to make it the other night! I grilled the chicken and it turned out just as good as always.
  3. Okay - I have to share my Allegheny story. It was the last of an 8 college tour. We were exhausted. Allegheny was not the best fit for oldest ds. But - we had a scheduled tour and interview. A pretty blonde haired, blue eyed girl took us on the tour. It was uneventful. We were tired. We got back to the admissions office to wait for his interview. I was honestly ready to start the final 6 hours home. I asked if ds just wanted to go home, without doing the interview. He was in a daze. I kept calling his name. In la la land, ds asked, "Did you see her eyes? I couldn't stop looking in her eyes." It was soooo unlike him and she was soooo not his typical type. It was a funny moment. I told him that her eyes were not a reason to consider a school and that he'd grow tired of them quickly and asked again if he wanted to skip the interview and go home. Eventually, he joined me - physically and emotionally. These days, he denies the entire event happened.
  4. A lot of times, I make eggplant with this dish. I just sautee in olive oil and garlic. Dessert: Pick up baklava somewhere!
  5. I am going to add...oldest ds got into ASU for grad school (physics). He is excited because they support the work of David Hestenes who is the architect of geometric algebra in use with physics. I think I said that correctly! And I don't think I posted about him yet. He is visiting ASU as I write this. :-)
  6. Another acceptance to Case Western with $33,000 in merit and $9,000 in grant money. He now has two choices. Choices are good!
  7. Oh Sabrina! Huge congratulations to you and your son! I am thrilled that your journey has landed you in the place you both desired. I am constantly in awe of this board and its unending source of love and support. Enjoy this moment with your son. And be proud of what you have accomplished.
  8. Just sending you hugs. We had the same experience this week. Crossing my fingers for your ds. It's a long wait, filled with many emotions.
  9. Thank you, Scoutermom. Your thread was just what I needed last night! Even if the OP was not meant in the way I took it. In fact, when I saw the title, I had just been thinking seriously about sending dd14 back to ps and getting a fulfilling full-time job. Sigh. Hugs to everyone for every reason!
  10. Ds said that the good news is that he has no clear top choice now. Of course, in the back of his mind, he will be waiting until the May decisions are released. Case Western is slated for tonight. Maybe it will give him a boost. Or not. ;)
  11. As adults, we all know things will be fine. But still... He is a quiet kid. He is especially quiet and reflective tonight. Hugs to you and yours, Quark.
  12. We are actually in limbo, which somehow makes things feel worse. Good day to you, Scoutermom!
  13. Yay! John McWhorter's Science of Linguistics is finally on sale!
  14. 8!! How did I miss your post? HUGE congrats and hugs and cries of joy for you and your dd. And to all of the other wonderful kids and parents who have recently posted... DS is on his way to Rochester for the scholarship interview. If he gets it, they pay not only 100% of tuition, room and board, but $5,000 for research. His heart is still set on a certain school, though....
  15. Oh, Bill! Thank you for sharing that wonderful story. I read it aloud to dd13 and it was just as magical the second time around! At the end, she said, "Dang. I thought he was going to end up marrying her." :) Please do share any menu ideas. I am officially sick of lamb after making so much of it yesterday. DD and SO had leftover kofta for lunch and I cannot even go into the kitchen due to to smell! I'll take some chicken and veggie ideas!
  16. Spy Car - I have never peeled the skins; it always seemed like a daunting task! I will certainly try your trick. My fave hummus recipe is Solomonov's in his Zahav cookbook. Yum!
  17. Kunafa with cheese sounds fabulous! The pastry chef at Zahav gave me her pistachio cake recipe. One of the best desserts I've ever eaten.
  18. I have made a good number of recipes from that Once Upon a Chef site. The pilaf shown in the chicken kebab pic is one of my son's faves. :) The tandoori chicken is one of mine. It has the perfect blend of flavors, especially with a good mango chutney. I am actually thinking about making it for the day before the wedding, when our out of town guests arrive.
  19. Well, do share! Any recipes you want to share? Wasn't making the pita bread super fun? So glad you had a good time!
  20. Oooh - I was planning to make two ground lamb recipes tomorrow for taste testing. Yotam's kofta! And Solomonov's lamb with pistachios. :) You've tried his kofta recipe and like it? Thought about fattoush salad and red lentil soup shooters! We are ordering the baklavas from my favorite Lebanese restaurant. He only does nuts, though! I already asked. ETA: Running to store now. Made Dal Makhani tonight and I have no cream!
  21. Pickled veggies are perfect to make in advance. Lots of mezze recipes; just not sure which are the most practical to make. Roasted chickpeas are perfect, too. I make those all of the time. Thank you!
  22. Totally agree and I get to cook something. The hummus bowls ARE awesome. Solomonov's other restaurant, Zahav, is amazing, too. One of our best culinary experiences eating at the chef's counter... Kung Fu - love the idea about the music!
