Favorite Lit for the Ancients?

Recommended Posts

I posted about this in another recent thread, but I can't find it.

Some books my 5th grader read last year for Ancients:

Ludmilla Zeman's Gilgamesh trilogy (picture books)

Gilgamesh the Hero by McCaughrean

The Golden Goblet

Tales of Ancient Egypt

Cleopatra by Dianne Stanley

God King

Tirzah

Seeker of Knowledge (picture book about the Rosetta Stone/heiroglyphics)

D'Aulaire's Greek Myths - the audiobook of this is good too, Audible.

The Children's Homer

Modern Rhymes about Ancient Times - Anicent Greece (silly, but fun)

Hittite Warrior

Beyond the Desert Gate

The Bronze Bow

The Aeneid for Boys and Girls

Julius Caesar - narrative version, Lamb's or Nesbit, I don't remember which.  And watched a movie.

Detectives in Togas

Our RA's were all Sutcliff:

Black Ships Before Troy

The Wanderings of Odysseus

      - both of these with Alan Lee illustrations!

The Eagle of the Ninth

We also added a few poems to our memory work list - a few stanzas of Horatius at the Bridge. I can't remember the others right now.

Also, lots of picture books from the SOTW lists in the AG.

We are using the list from The Classical House of Learning Lit blog again this year. Did it with odd when she was in logic ancients four years ago. I also second continuing to read lots of picture books from the SOTW AG or just others that you find. We read those aloud.

So far this year dd12 has read Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos and is in Tales from Ancient Egypt mentioned above. We are reading a couple of non fiction books aloud to go along too. And we are reading Maia of Thebes aloud. (Not a favorite, but it is set in Ancient Egypt, and is light reading to reinforce things we read in our encyclopedias.) Next up is a focus on the Golden Children's Bible. And after that, I'd have to consult my list, but I believe the blog is still up even if not active anymore. We bought many of the titles four years ago and saved the old lesson plans. It includes a lot of things often mentioned and some that I don't see mentioned much. I think it was a good mix.
