RightStart user question- re: level E

I'm curious what age or grade your child was when they finished level E. We are finishing up fourth grade and will be lucky to make it half way through E by the end of the summer. (Level C took so long!) I feel so "behind" but when I talked with a RS rep at a convention they said we were doing just fine. If we finished level E in 5th grade and then began level G in 6th grade adding in VideoText, we would be good to go. Thoughts or experiences?

Thanks!

Jess

My understanding is that you aren't far off track. Level A is K, B is 1st, etc. So according to RS, E should finish up by end of 4th and go into G in 5th. You can see how RS notes the grade/Levels on their Homeschool FAQ page.

That's why I was feeling behind. They said this was true of the second edition not the first as those books are longer and not designed to fit into a year. Because they are breaking it up they will be adding another book to the second edition series. So then the end of E would be about 5th grade. Just wondering how it was working with other people out there. I should have specified we have the first editions though!

Dd2 is taking a long time getting through b. I imagine our will take her through 5th to make it through e. I didn't know rs was adding in another level in the 2 ed, but an glad to see it happen. (I'm ready to be d.o.n.e. with b.)

My older came to rs at level c. She will finish e in fourth this month. I have some concerns in completing g and vt at the recommended scheduling as she is set to finish alg 2 by 8th. I'm not sure she'll be ready for that sequence. We'll be taking it slow. All that to say, I don't think you're behind. I think you are on a normal track. And certainly if you are working where your dc are at, then you are right where you need to be.

If it is a real concern maybe work ahead by working through two "easy" lessons in one day (but ONLY if your kids is up for it and is still able to follow it).

My oldest will finish level E midway through 5th grade.  Level C took us a year and a half to complete.  I was also concerned that we were behind, but Dr. Cotter set my mind at ease when I spoke to her at our homeschool convention.

2nd edition...

A is K

B is 1

C is 2

D is 3

E is 4

F is 5

God is 6 and 7

1st edition was in theory the same, except most families found at least one level took 1.5- to 2 years. So most families would finish E at the end of grade 5 or 6.

The program has letters specifically to help you not feel behind, and there are ways to adjust after RightStart for ending at any point up to finishing E (or F 2nd Ed) at the end of grade 8.

So far our family seems to take 1.5 years for both level C and level D. (My 2 oldest).

Well, I will say that we felt behind enough in D and doing two lessons a day I just could not go fast enough to challenge dd. That's when we moved to MM for a semester and now are in BA. I love the foundation that RS gave her, I'll pull some of the principles from there still for her and later kids for sure, but I felt we needed to keep moving or else I would not be able to give her a good math path if she were interested in such a thing later on. That's me. We just got behind with babies, my health, etc., and even with skipping the last 1/4 of Level C (because I knew we'd hit fractions again and she wouldn't struggle with the concept) I just couldn't move her fast enough through the curriculum without feeling she was really missing something.

We have finished E at the end of 4th, but we skipped a few lessons in both E and C.

The geometry/drawing lessons are often fiddly and come out wrong because the student can't be precise enough to get it exactly right and we don't spend lots of time on them. Also the long division lessons at the end of E were terrible.

I have learned lots from RS, but am happy to have Dd moving on to MM next year. We are both ready for a change. Ds had about 10 lessons to go in B when we finished our school year. We will review math over the summer and pick up where we left off in the fall. He needs a slower pace than Dd to really get it. I didn't know about the additional book being added with the revision, good to know. Thanks, Scoutingmom.

I didn't have a problem with finishing each RightStart (1 ed) level in a year.

My son finished E at age 9 (end of 3rd) and my daughter finished D at age 8.5. She won't be using E because it isn't right for her personality (she does much better when she reads than when I tell her something).

My son loved the drawing in C. My daughter hated it. So I let my son do every drawing assignment and I let my daughter skip most of them. When my daughter understood a concept, I was perfectly willing to let her show her mastery and compact a few lessons into one day. Maybe I feel confident doing this because I feel comfortable with math? I'd have a much harder time modifying a writing curriculum.

I loved math in elementary. I remember great times in first grade math. I loved pattern blocks in preschool. I do math every day unless someone is deathly ill. I want my kids to have the positive math memories I do, so I prioritize daily math.

Thank you ladies for all your input. I had myself all relaxed about our current pace at the convention and then worked myself up feeling all behind once I got home and began planning the year end/next year. I'll try to go back to feeling okay with where we are.  I hope to do a few lessons a week over the summer but if we get too busy with life I'll come back here and read this thread. :)
