homeschoolmom99
Can anyone suggest a book to use when teaching music theory? This would be used in conjunction with piano lessons. Specifically, I'm looking for something available via Amazon.com, at Barnes and Noble, etc.--not something from a homeschool resource catalog. Thanks :-)
Jen in NY
http://www.amazon.com/Kjos-Master-Theory-Books-book/dp/B002N3418O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281213124&sr=8-3 You could go with the tried and true "Master Theory" workbooks... I used them 25 years ago at music camp. :001_smile:
Melanie
We're using the first edition of Scales, Intervals, Keys and Triads: A Programed Book of Elementary Music Theory by John Clough. The latest edition is available on Amazon.
StephanieZ
Highly recommend Alfred's Essential Music Theory computer program. http://www.amazon.com/Alfreds-Essentials-Music-Theory-Assessment/dp/073906861X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281217882&sr=8-1 (Be sure to get the 3.0 newest version if you have Windows 7.) It is awesome. My dc 7, 11, 13 are all using it successfully. I love that I don't have to repurchase workbooks for all the kids, and I don't have to grade or check! Love it! FWIW, my ds's guitar teacher who is also a piano teacher and teaches theory at the college level recommended the Alfred's series for theory at the elem/high school level. . . and I found the computer version (he is a technophobe) and it appears to be inclusive of everything in the workbook/CD series. . . Anyhow, it's a huge hit here. Theory Time is the workbook series that also comes highly recommended, but you will need to buy the teacher/answer books if you aren't a theory whiz. JenneinCA
This is the music theory book my daughter's recorder teacher said to get when she found out my daughter had NO music theory at all. That was quite the day, "What do you mean she had no theory?" All I could say was that she self taught recorder from a recorder book. The teacher was mortified. http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Theory-Complete-Self-Instruction-Course/dp/0882842250/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1281238914&sr=8-3 Practical Theory Complete Self Instruction Course, it is available at amazon. WishboneDawn
My daughter's violin teacher has her use this series, Elementary Music Theory. I don't know where it ranks in quality but she's enjoyed it.
Gwen in VA
I taught a music theory class last year using Elementary Music Rudiments by Mark Sarnecki. Fabulous text! (Reasonably advanced -- students who have finished it go straight into learning harmonization.) http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/Elementary-Music-Rudiments-The-Complete-Elementary-Music-Rudiments/4942962
