Would anyone have an art history/appreciation lesson plan they would share?

I'd like to not reinvent the wheel, if at all possible, especially since I've used up most of the upcoming school yr budget buying 3! algebra 1 programs. This would be for my upcoming 9th grade dd, who is seriously looking into art schools, possibly for an animation? degree. I'd like her to have a solid study of art history. I've looked at the OM syllabus and it's ok, but it seemed heavy on paper writing, and right now, that's not what I'm looking for. I guess I am looking for a systematic study of art from cave paintings to contemporary works, major artists and their time periods, major (not to be missed) works of art, background stories of the artists and their work, general discussion of, "Notice this and that in this piece... it is significant because...." Does that make any sense or is it clear as mud?? I'd also like some guided ideas for projects she can work on that would be portfolio quality. I've considered using The Teaching Company videos too. ANY advice would be great and soooo appreciated, especially if you already have something designed and you wouldn't mind emailing it to me.:001_smile:

I've got one for a WTM-style one that uses the Annotated Mona Lisa spread out over the 4 years of Rhetoric. It was easy to figure out (unlike the WTM history & lit!), and very basic. My two oldest did this and asked for something different for year 4 because they just didn't like secular art from the modern era, so we used a Bob Jones art history book. We're not really into Bob Jones, but they have a very nice art museum on campus, and a lot of the works from it are featured in the book. I still have the AML plans for all 4 years, though.

 

I also have an AP Art History schedule that I worked out for my dd. This uses the REA AP Art History book (with CD) and the AML, and is a 35 week schedule. I really like both of these resources! They are inexpensive and easy to use. My dd ended up not using this plan because she changed her mind about which APs she was going to do.

 

We also have a bunch of other art books, such as The History of Art for Young People, Sister Wendy's, and one about the National Gallery. They are great for reference but not really necessary any more. IMHO one of the best resources for art is the internet. Whatever obscure artist you're into is probably on Wikipedia.

Thanks for posting this link. It is just what I was seeking for my dd. When the additional components are added (from the guide and online text), I think it will be just enough for 0.5 credit for us. Especially if our local museum or Nashville have exhibits related to the topics. I would dislike doing a class where I could never see works in person.

If you are looking for some serious guidelines, here is a list of artists with certain works to be studied for an "art history" specialization for end of Swiss high school.

 

Starting on page 62 they give all the background methods of studying but it is all in French. So starting on page 66, they list first prehistory and then go on the the following periods. Don't be scared off by the periods as the French might be too much. But after that, the artists names are standard. If you use Chrome, I think it will offer to translate the pages...

 

If you type in "Lascaux" or the page in the little "find" boxes at the top of this document, it will take you to page 66...

I just got their catalog. It is called "Art: Over 2,500 Works from Cave to Contemporary." The write-up says that it is a comprehensive art appreciation tool, includes works from the beginning of time to today, and can be used over a six year period?

 

The price is $50.00. I have not used this book but it looks very interesting and may fit your requirements.

 

I hope you find what you need.
