oliveview
We have found several really great bugs lately and I want to find a way to keep them. These bugs are already dead and are in perfect condition. One of them is a 4-5" dragonfly that got caught in our laundry room. So, do I just get pins and stick them into a board or what? Any great display ideas?
Jane in NC
Entomologists use long, skinny pins to mount their specimens. May I suggest that you give your county Extension Service a call? 4-H has some insect curricular materials that you and your children might enjoy. Best, Jane
Renthead Mommy
Check out http://www.homesciencetools.com and some of their insect collecting stuff. I'm sure you can find/make the things they have if you don't want to order them, but it will give you an idea of places to start.
3lilreds in NC
Oh, how neat! I've been thinking that would be fun, too. I'm glad you don't need instructions for how to kill them. :D Here is a link to an ehow article on starting a bug collection. They tell you what "bug collectors" use to display their
runninmommy
This is our bug collection. First, we pinned all the bugs to a piece of styrofoam the same size as the shadowbox. Then, my daughter put all the bugs in their orders and labeled them. It needs some TLC from a few moves. We are thinking of starting a new one. Thanks for the reminder. If the pic. is too small try clicking on it. It should open in a new window.
oliveview
These are all great ideas! Thank you so much everyone. I think we are going to try a shadow box and see how it goes.
AndyJoy
When I made mine in 8th grade I used a shadow box with a piece of foam core.
