I've only ever done the stand alone kits, so I can't compare. But watching the dvd's and doing the kits has been a great 1st and 2nd grade science for my 2 younger girls!

I really wanted the kits to be great.  My kids loved the show and the books.

Mostly, they were pretty lame.  Maybe we just bought bummer ones, because I think we gave up after buying two or three.

Some of the kits just don't work well and aren't worth the money, like the microscope one. I ended up reading reviews and only purchasing ones that folks said included things that were pretty fail-safe.

Also, my second grader was barely interested in the Magic School Bus kits anymore. Unless you haven't done any science experiments with your second grader before, those might not hold the interest of the older child all year.
