Jame
I think I remember this being an issue for us the last couple of years, but for those of you who use Math Mammoth, do you find the beginning of the year to be difficult? The mental math review always upsets my son and makes me think, "oh no! I hope this isn't going to be a problem for us the rest of the year!" We always start math a week ahead to ease into school, but my son is already having fits, lol. Next week we'll be doing all subjects and I really hope I'm right about this being an issue in the beginning and then things get better. Momto6inIN
My DD (currently in MM6) always struggles to get back into the groove of math at the beginning of the year. Today she was working on rounding and doing mental math with estimated numbers and she insisted she didn't know how to multiply 20,000 x 2,000 without using the standard multiplying in columns algorithm - even though she's been doing it easily since 4th grade 🙄
alisha
I've found that while the review is useful, it's more useful for me to move ahead to a chapter (we have done MM 1-5) where new concepts are taught so he has something "exciting", and then if needed go back and do a quick move through on the review part of the first chapter. (meaning not everything, but maybe only a couple problems within each section). Otherwise, we get bogged down with the review and math STARTS out boring--which is not how I want him to view math. PeterPan
Not a lover of Math Mammoth, but everything smooths over better with donuts. Or m&Ms. But seriously, maybe some nice pumpkin spice donuts to welcome the fall...

Yes, that's how it is for my son too. The first year we did MM (3rd grade) I remember switching to MUS right away because of how much he resisted. We ended up going back to MM to fill in some gaps and I realized it was a great fit for us. Once the mental math review is done he does much better. 13 hours ago, alisha said: I've found that while the review is useful, it's more useful for me to move ahead to a chapter (we have done MM 1-5) where new concepts are taught so he has something "exciting", and then if needed go back and do a quick move through on the review part of the first chapter. I may do this! I started math a week early and am having him do a page a day instead of 2. If there are still issues, I may just move him ahead and come back. Thanks!
