NotesFromTheParsonage
What do you think? Essential part of learning grammar? Just trying to decide if I want to choose a curriculum that includes diagramming or stick to what is working right now for us.
RootAnn
IMO, always stick with what is working right now as long as you are getting good results.
PeterPan
Option 3. Continue your curriculum but add diagramming. That's what we did. We were using Shurley, so we just chose one of the 3 sentences for the day and diagrammed it on a small 17X20 whiteboard, boom done.
Kiara.I
Nobody in my area learns to diagram. It's not taught here. So, I have to vote not essential. That said, I think it's cool (having now seen it...), and am teaching it. You could stick with what's working right now and add a simple side section on diagramming at some point later. HomeAgain
I find the thought process for it to be essential, but not necessary in younger grades or even consecutive grades. When faced with complex sentences I tend to break them down in my head using diagramming method: finding the subject first, then the predicate and so on and so forth, eventually forming sense in my head by stripping it down to the basics and building it back up. It helps me to understand better.
NotesFromTheParsonage
I guess I should have said the kids in question will be 5th and 7th graders next year.
