Melissa in Australia
Hi guys, goggling is not helping us with this problem. dd16 and ds12 use to be able to play minecraft through LAN (offline) by logging in on one computer then joining in with the other computer in offline mode. They hadn't played in a while ( a few months) and now it doesn't work. we have tried everything we can think of. we have tried different computers etc. Does anyone have any ideas on how we can do this? All help would greatly be appreciated by ds12. Thank you
Um_2_4
Are they playing with 1 account? (ie one login on 2 computers?) That does not work on the latest versions of minecraft (DS THINKS that it might have worked on older version, maybe they had not upgraded their version in a while?), each person would need an account (we have 3 here). 1st player opens a "single player world" then press Esc and "Open to Lan" then 2nd player joins by clicking on "Multi-player" and clicks "Lan world" to join.
EndOfOrdinary
They just upgraded to version 1.9. This is your problem. With the Microsoft buy out many things have shifted and monetary holes are being plugged everywhere.

kirstenhill
Open to LAN should still work with 1.9 - we've done it here successfully - as long as you have a different account on each computer and each computer is running the same version. That being said, we have one of three computers that often has trouble connecting to other Computers' hosted worlds (this was both in 1.9 and earlier)...so I suspect that internal settings on the computer can mess with it too, though I haven't been able to figure out which specific settings. The computer that has trouble connecting to other worlds can more often be the "host" of the world with fewer problems. So if you've always been trying one computer as the host, maybe try the other?

From our experience (via DS12 who handles this here  ): are both on the same EXACT version? (ie 1.8.2 or 1.9) Any mods? (won't work at all with mods) Most times it happened with the laptop, the wifi connection was too weak. We upgraded our modem and it was much better.
ashfern
We had an issue with one computer and it's firewall. Also, we have two wireless routers (don't ask) and they have to be on the same router.
Sun
We've had that problem a few times. Do you have more than one wireless network available? They have to be on the same one, so check that they are. That turned out to be the problem at our house once. With DS's old computer, he had to manually turn the firewall off before opening it to LAN, or it wouldn't work. I'm sure that more tech-savvy types could have figured out how to change the settings, but we're not those people. He stuck a post-it note on the side of the monitor to remind him to turn it back on after each session. And, ditto to what someone said upthread about being sure that they're both trying to play on the same version number and/or snapshot.

We will give that a try this evening.
