mountains27
I'm looking for a reading program that uses letter tiles to make words. My son is almost 8 and having a hard time reading and spelling. He recently had an evaluation at the local school and the specialist he tested with recommended that I use letter tiles so that he has to see and sound out each letter in a word. She mentioned the program Making Words and that looks good but I want to explore other programs also as I am sure there are a few out there that use letter tiles. Any recommendations? hellen
All About Reading uses tiles. All About Spelling uses the same tiles.

BatmansWife
Right Track Reading (and Back on the Right Track) use tiles. But you make them. She explains exactly how. You get bathroom tiles from a place like Menards. They make wonderful letter tiles...nice and cool to the touch. ETA: Here is a little more info about the tiles, called Sound Tiles. And here's a page that shows pictures. Edited March 3, 2016 by BatmansWife
smarson
Logic of English uses tiles sometimes - you could use them for all the spelling. Barefoot Ragamuffin has a free download of letter tiles you can make yourself as well.
Guest
Simply Charlotte Mason's reading program does. So does Reading Reflex, to a lesser degree. But you can just buy letter tiles and use them with anything.
mountains27
Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and ordered this book making words for now as it seemed a less expensive way to try out letter tiles. I was able to find out the set of letters for the first lesson in this book by previewing the table of contents so I tried it out with him today. We have along way to go and I'm hoping this book will help me give him the guidance he needs!
City Mouse
For $10-12, Making Words is not a bad place to start. In fact, I use it to tutor some of my students who need a bit more practice, but it does not provide any instruction in phonics rules at all. If he is having enough trouble reading that you have already had him tested, Making Words is probably not going to be enough, so be prepared to move on to another program such as Barton.
