steppingstonemomma Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 My son is taking Derek Owen's Calc 1 class right now (Junior yr). His plan is to retake it again at the local community college next fall just to solidify the info in his mind. Then he'd take Calc 2 the spring of Senior yr at the cc. The cc just posted the instructors for the Calc classes and there is not a single one that gets a good rating. He needs a solid understanding because he's going into engineering. So now I'm trying to see if there are any Calc 2 online classes that he could take that would be a strong class with a really good instructor... Any ideas? Quote
8filltheheart Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Not online, but Thinkwell's calculus is a good course. My dd finished the equivalent of cal 1 a few weeks ago (she has no desire to do the 2nd half of the course bc she is not heading anywhere near a STEM degree.) She took the CLEP exam last week at the local university and scored very high on test. (She wanted to stop math, so the CLEP made more sense than having to keep everything fresh in her mind until MaY.) 1 Quote
MarkT Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Are there other CCs in your state with online and well-rated Calc 2 classes? I also would look at the MOOCs (edX, coursera, etc) there must be something out there by now. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/542418-homeschooling-high-school-math/?do=findComment&comment=6191111 1 Quote
steppingstonemomma Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 There are others, but they are over an hour away and I cannot drive him (6 other kiddos need to be schooled!) and he doesn't have his license. I will check out thinkwell and coursera... Quote

I will check out thinkwell and coursera... I meant an online Community College class. Can this student do somewhat independent work? online Community College is usually well structured. http://www.ccconline.org/mat202-calculus-ii-ma1-2/ found this free one: http://educhoices.org/articles/Calculus_II_OpenCourseWare_Free_Online_Undergraduate_Level_Calculus_Course_by_Dixie_State_College_of_Utah.html Coursera offerings seem to be a little non-standard: https://www.coursera.org/learn/calculus1 https://www.coursera.org/learn/advanced-calculus http://freevideolectures.com/Subject/Calculus Edited February 23, 2016 by MarkT Quote
bugfree Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 (edited) I really need an online Calc 2 class too and I really understand your frustration. The closest thing I have is an in person cc class. :( We currently take all our math classes through AoPS. This doesn't really answer your question, but the counting and probability, number theory and group theory might be another way to go. http://artofproblemsolving.com/school Edited February 24, 2016 by bugfree Quote
stephinsocal Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Have you looked at MIT's open courseware? ocw.mit.edu Quote
Kinspired Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 My dd took this MIT OCW class, which she really enjoyed. It covers calc 1 and 2 and prepared her well for the Calc BC exam and calc 3. She enjoyed the prof so much, she even recommends the lectures to her friends who are taking calc at traditional schools. http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-01-single-variable-calculus-fall-2006/ 1 Quote
steppingstonemomma Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 Does the MIT OCW class grade the work for you? That's my issue... we need that.... Quote

No you would have to hire a tutor or someone like that to grade your work. If you would like do MIT OCW or similar I could probably hook you up with a qualified grader. (not me but person is a retired MIT grad, contact me via PM) Quote
