janainaz
I am attempting to put together a semester course for my ds15 who needs to have economics completed by next year. Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell has received some great reviews, but does anyone know if there is anything that accompanies that (tests, quizzes, etc.). I would like for him to read this book, but I don't mind supplementing with something else. He will be doing this independently and I'd like to gauge what/how much he is learning. Thanks!
marbel
Thomas Sowell's site has links to .pdfs of questions for the book.
janainaz
Would reading this book and using the questions on his website be enough to count for a half credit of economics?
marbel
I'm not very good at making that determination. I am aiming for a full credit with my son and he is doing/has done: - the Sowell book - Great Courses lecture series (36 30-minute lectures) - Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt - Readings from the Library of Economics and Liberty - Readings from DK's The Economics Book - News articles related to economics However he is not much of a writer so I am not requiring much in the way of output, just a few short essays here and there. We read/listen to the lectures and talk about it. If you go by hours, you can figure a half-credit is 60 - 90 hours, right? So you can have him keep a time sheet. (I know many people think this is unnecessary.)

(I know many people think this is unnecessary.) I'm on the tail end of my homeschooling journey and he has a few classes he must have completed prior to admission to a specific school. I know that studying economics will be something he actually enjoys, and because he will be doing this course independently, I'd like to ensure that he covers it thoroughly. I was just looking for input regarding using the Sowell book, and possibly supplementing with something else to fill any holes. My son is a textbook-lover, so the more worksheets and tests, etc. - the better. **I much prefer secular curriculum**
JoJosMom
I don't know whether this will help, but John Stossel's website has links to free resources. He also has curriculum available (some is free.) You might be able to find supplementary material there. HTH. :001_smile:
Julie of KY
I plan to add the Great Course lectures to Thomas Sowell's book and pdf questions.
Classical Katharine
I suspect Mr. Sowell would be very pleased to know his book is being used in this way. Would one of you like to try to let him know via his site?
Tranquility7
Ok, I have nothing to add to this discussion except to say, Ohhhhhh, how I :001_wub: :001_wub: :001_wub: Thomas Sowell! DH was an Economics major way back, and I knew nothing of Economics when we got married. I was kinda (halfheartedly!) interested, so he bought me Sowell's Basic Economics book for Christmas (so romantic, right?!), and I was glued to it for days!!! Seriously, I would stay up late reading it! It is so well written and clear and excellent in every way. A perfect intro to Economics. I intend to read it aloud with DS once he is in high school. DH and I jokingly consider Thomas Sowell to be my "celebrity crush", LOL.

MyHandsAreFull
I read the Hazlitt book for the first time in high school--it has stood me in good stead for many years. It is basic but really gives a common sense framework for evaluating all kinds of proposals/schemes and just understanding the fundamentals. Loved it! Big fan of Dr. Sowell, too. Deee
So which of Dr Sowell's books should I read if I read only one? Keep in mind this for me, not for school, that I'm a scientist and raving leftie (and thus really think economics is just a little bit dirty), and that I'll be "reading" it via Audible Thanks muchly D
Lovelymom
Would anyone happen to have any answers for the questions in the back? My husband is teaching my son and would GREATLY appreciate any answers that can be given. Even just a picture of the answers your own child has answered would be helpful so that he can compare and check faster. If anyone can help then please personally message me. historymatters
There's a Thomas Sowell Quotes FB page. Also, Memoria Press' Economics class uses his and Hazlitt's books: https://www.memoriapressacademy.com/catalog?pagename=economics
MarkT
Sowell Is this considered a "college level" textbook?
