My 15 year old struggled through Saxon Math's Algebra 2 last year, and it looks like we're going to have to take it again. If this makes any sense, it's almost as if they "over complicated" the wording and explanation on how to do the problems. A friend of ours who was a high school teacher before she had kids even helped him out a couple of times and was perplexed as to why they would explain things the way they did. We also used Art Reed's DVDs to accompany each lesson (have been using his DVDs for 3 years now). He was able to get through Algebra 1 after much frustration and reworking lessons, but he didn't have much confidence coming away from Algebra 1. Better to back up and make sure the foundation is solid than to plunge in and have him frustrated. MUS/Demme especially would rather have the kids back up. kiana Posted August 18, 2015 Share Posted August 18, 2015 Whatever you choose, I would honestly start in Algebra 1 and plan on him testing through looking for gaps in his knowledge from algebra. It sounds as if he understood algebra 1 well enough to work the problems, but not well enough to really use it, so there are probably some parts that he just. didn't. get. MUS and TT have good reputations for students who struggled in other curricula. If you are getting a tutor, you might also consider Algebra: A Fresh Approach, or getting a college (Lial, Martin-Gay, Larson, or alternative -- they are all similar) Beginning and Intermediate Algebra (combined textbook).
