If the river kayaking tour website says:

"This route includes a moderately challenging Class II rapid," how scared should I be? We've all been lake kayaking, but this "rapid" thing will be a first for me.

All I can think about is that disturbing movie with Kevin Bacon and Meryl Streep.

I have a friend who runs rivers all. the. time. (when he disappears for a weekend - we know he's on a river somewhere)  and is certified for class V (the highest considered navigable.)

class 2 is a 'higher waves' - but still beginner - rapid.

here's a list of the classifications.

iow: plan on getting wet, and some excitement, but should be easy.

No guide. We'll be on our own. Dh and my two boys have no fear of this. (And if I let them see the options on the website, they will all quickly start lobbying for the higher rapids.)

I've been watching videos on the site, too. I think I'll be okay. I hope.

For me -- Class 2 is fun. Class 3 is fun and challenging. Class 4 is challenging and scary. I won't go on anything more than that unless it's with a guide in an oar boat.

Are you taking inflatable kayaks or hard shell?
