people first language.

 

My child has down syndrom. He is a child. He is not a downs child. He is not a downs. My child has a disability, but he is not his disability. Additionally, he is not AFFLICTED.

 

I say this for my ds, but I also know many, many adults who have disabilities. People are not their disability, but people may have a disability. When I talk about a person who happens to have a disability and the disability is relevant then I will say "X, who has -----." If the disability has no relevance at all then I don't mention it.

 

I know news outlets have been perpetuating this. I also know national disabilities rights groups jumped on it right away and began asking all major news outlets to change their language as soon as the VP pick was announced.
