bettyandbob
people first language. My child has down syndrom. He is a child. He is not a downs child. He is not a downs. My child has a disability, but he is not his disability. Additionally, he is not AFFLICTED. I say this for my ds, but I also know many, many adults who have disabilities. People are not their disability, but people may have a disability. When I talk about a person who happens to have a disability and the disability is relevant then I will say "X, who has -----." If the disability has no relevance at all then I don't mention it. I know news outlets have been perpetuating this. I also know national disabilities rights groups jumped on it right away and began asking all major news outlets to change their language as soon as the VP pick was announced. Laurie in CA
Betty:grouphug: I'm sure no one meant it in a bad way but I understand how you must feel. You are blessed with a "fearfully and wonderfully made child".
