Hikin' Mama
We are taking a verrry long trip....about 20-24 hours of driving each way. I get carsick if I read, sew, knit, etc. while in the car, so I want to listen to a book or two, because I get sooooo bored just sitting there. However, when I listen to audiobooks I get sleepy. I'm really not much of an auditory learner, so that may be part of it, but I don't want to feel like I've wasted 4 days sitting in the car at the end of our trip. Do I just need to listen to the right kind of book? Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks for any advice you can give!
Aiden
I also get carsick if I try to read etc while riding in a car, and I can't focus on audio books to save my life, despite my absolute love of reading. However, I can focus on talk radio, podcasts, etc., things where the tone is more conversational. So maybe you could try that--not audio books, but podcasts about topics you find interesting. Suzanne in ABQ
I totally fall asleep listening to audio books, esp. with anything by Jim Weiss. :) I love him and his stories, there's just something about his voice. . . Personal rule: No Jim Weiss while driving. It's dangerous. I love listening to podcasts like "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and "Snap Judgment" both from NPR. There are many more. Perhaps you could load up your device with podcasts to have ready while driving. Personal DVDs are great in the car, as well (unless you're driving, of course). lailasmum
Maybe try a playlist comedy podcasts or lifestyle/interest type podcasts rather than a story you can lose yourself in.
Hikin' Mama
Hey, the podcast idea is great! I usually listen to NPR in the car, but it doesn't come in while we're going cross country. Thanks!
HSmomof2
I am not an auditory learner at all and really don't like audiobooks. Dh and DS love them and have many. Dh has several audiobooks that are dramatized. I find these more enjoyable and can pay attention better.
J-rap
Are you the driver? I usually listen to a good news program (usually NPR) and drink coffee while chewing gum.
Mrs Mungo
I don't have trouble when I am the driver, but I do find that the narrator makes a difference. Try listening to some different samples on audible, maybe?
