hsingscrapper
Fury just turned 15. I'm looking at the Rainbow catalog and trying to find something thorough but not intimidating and costs $50 or less for Pre-Algebra/Algebra. I've thought about the Painless or EZ or Power Basics. Have any of you used any these? Any other suggestions?
ChrissySC
Power Basics are not nearly comprehensive enough in my opinion. I say this and thought that I should also add that I am a Math Mammoth, Saxon, BJU user too.
hsingscrapper
BJU was a not a good fit for us. My personal upper math skills are shoddy and I felt like the Pre-Algebra course assumed too much skill on my part.
Chris in VA
I'd go with used Saxon from a personal seller. It's scripted sort of--written to the student but you can read it together. If you haven't used Saxon before and want to, take the placement test first.
Liza Q
I just got Lial's Algebra 1 (8th edition), the Digital Video Tutor cds and the Student Solutions manual, all for under $30. That price included shipping!! I got the text from Amazon and teh other components from Textbooks. com, all in excellent shape. The cds were unused - pkg still sealed!! My son liked how it looked and did not find it intimidating, but you can look at some of the pages here - http://www.pearsonhighered.com/showtell/lial_0321557123/lial_0321557123.html
hsingscrapper
I have a credit to spend at Rainbow. Ordering elsewhere is not an option financially. I might consider Saxon.
Kareni
I see that Rainbow Resource carries Life of Fred. Here's a link to the Life of Fred Middle/High School Series. Regards, Kareni
prairiewindmomma
Life of Fred pre-algebra is great for the right student. I'd look at the samples with your child; there are many online. Saxon would be my other choice (for the more traditional textbook). At $50 budget max, those are your best choices. Either paired with Khan Academy and a MUS worksheet (printable free from website) for additional support when needed should be adequate. hsingscrapper
What's the difference between pre-algebra and beginning algebra in LoF?
Kareni
What's the difference between pre-algebra and beginning algebra in LoF? What math has your daughter done previously? Pre-Algebra generally consists of the four basics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), decimals, fractions, percents and sometimes various odds and ends including probability, sets, etc. In order to thrive in Algebra, the underlined should be pretty solid.
