Kareni
Purely for pleasure, I'd suggest the Brother Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters. Here's a link to the first A Morbid Taste for Bones: The First Chronicle of Brother Cadfael. There is also a wonderful series of DVDs featuring Derek Jacobi as Brother Cadfael. Regards, Kareni
Jane in NC
The Once and Future King--or has he read that one already? I second the Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mysteries, a personal favorite, for fun reads. Edith Pargeter (Peters' real name) also wrote The Brothers Gwynedd Quartet, four novels set in 13th century Wales, painting heroic battles against Edward. Lori D.
- Beowulf - Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (Pyle) - The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (Pyle) - The Sword in the Stone (White) 1st of the 4 books that were combined to make the book "The Once and Future King", the retelling of King Arthur's life and reign -- the remaining 3 sections DO cover Lancelot and Guinevere's long standing affair, though not in a graphic manner - Ivanhoe (Scott) - Cadfael mystery series (Peters) - The Great and Terrible Quest (Lovett) - Farmer Giles of Ham (Tolkien) -- short story - Smith of Wooten Major (Tolkien) -- short story (and certainly the character of Aragorn, and his land of Gondor, out of Tolkien's trilogy Lord of the Rings is very medieval Europe in feel and in the knight's code of chivalry) - The Canturbury Tales -- preview, as several stories are a bawdy - Don Quixote -- an abridged translation - The Samurai's Tale (16th century Japan, but their samurai period is in many ways very similar to Europe's medieval/feudal period) - Crown and Covenant series (definitely outside of medieval timess -- 17th century Scotland, but stirring, heroic tales) perhaps more for a girl, but also worthwhile: - Beauty and the Beast: And Other Classic French Fairy Tales (translator: Zipes) - Catherine Called Birdy (Cushman) - Mathilda Bone (Cushman)
Cedarmom
Rosemary Sutcliffe has a series on King Arthur that is really good. She also has some other medieval historical fiction, I can't remember the names, but if you search Amazon they should show up.
