Filling in gaps/broadening education

Recommended Posts

Calvin has taken to downloading podcasts from the In Our Time website to listen to while he walks the dog.  I've mentioned them here before, but Calvin hasn't really used them up until now.  The format is a round-table discussion between the (intelligent but non-specialist) presenter and three distinguished academic specialists.  Each programme is free-standing, but the back-catalogue is enormous, so you could pull them together into courses, or just pick up something that interests you.

Calvin was listening to a programme about Chinese literature (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) last night.  It's not at all part of his core school courses, but he is enjoying broadening his knowledge.  The experts on that programme were: Frances Wood, Former Lead Curator of Chinese Collections at the British Library; Craig Clunas, Professor of the History of Art at the University of Oxford; Margaret Hillenbrand, University Lecturer in Modern Chinese Literature at the University of Oxford and Fellow of Wadham College.

ETA: There are over 800 episodes available.

Clueless question...how do you listen to these podcasts or something like teaching company lectures on audible during a walk or in the car? So far we've only listened to audio cds in the car or streaming audio via laptop but we need web access for the latter. I'd love to start downloading podcasts too. I'm guessing I'll need an idevice of some sort?

PS: thank you for the link!

Calvin received an iPod for his birthday, so he listens on that.  Some cars have jacks to plug iPods into, so that you use the car speakers.

It is possible to download podcast to the kindle. First thing I bug my hubby. However I prefer podcast on my ipod to use as lullaby for my kids.
I have a usb port car charger. Daiso sells them.

iTunesU is the one I have not found a kindle equivalent as I download OpenU UK stuff for my fun watching.

My car has a USB port, so theoretically I can just plug in a thumb drive - but I haven't used it yet because it is terribly inconveniently located (in the glove box! :confused1: ).

DH's car has a port too, which is more easily accessible.  He loves that feature and uses it all the time!
