Halcyon
I would like to learn more about these. I think they would work well with how my DS11 studies and learns. He has done a bit of Biology and is doing Chem this year, so my guess is I would start with Earth Science. I would download it to my ipad and import it into Dropbox so he could add highlights. Thoughts? Has anyone used these? Here's a link on Amazon to the Earth Science Honors Middle School book (there is also a non-Honors one): http://www.amazon.com/CK-12-Science-Honors-Middle-School-ebook/dp/B0042XA30S/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391304940&sr=1-3&keywords=ck12+earth+science
Arcadia
My kids didn't like the format of the CK-12 books. Here's the link to the CK-12 earth science page (need to click on the FlexBooks tab) which also have the workbooks and teacher's edition. http://www.ck12.org/earth-science/ Biology page http://www.ck12.org/biology/ Chemistry page http://www.ck12.org/chemistry/ Life science page http://www.ck12.org/life-science/

There are some typographical errors, but nothing terrible. ETA: okay wait. the links you gave me are different from what i tried last year. Have they improved the interface? I like it! I also like the questions they give at the end of each section. Hmmm. This might work.
My3girls
We are using the life science this year. Dd12 is not complaining about it so I consider that a success. She usually watches a brainpop video on the topic then reads the corresponding section in ck12 and does the review questions. The only thing is she would like more hands on activities so I'm now looking at supercharged science thanks to the want but don't need thread. But doubt I'll be able to afford it though. eeks! Brad S
My son's been using a flexbook for middle school chemistry/physical science. He's not complaining, which is a good sign, and in a quick look, it looked good. He reads the book, and it's discussed in an outsourced chemistry class which is labs and discussion -- the agreement is that the students read the book and class time is only for discussion and, mostly, lab work (no lectures presenting the material). It's working well and so the that book seems to work well. I have seen some other flexbooks (perhaps algebra 2?? was the most recent one I looked at) which I didn't think were very good or appealing. Halcyon
Thanks all. This may be a good solution, although my son prefers real books. Maybe if we weave in some living books.
Wildiris
Any thoughts on how CK-12 science compares to CPO Science?
Halcyon
We didnt like CPO Life Science here. We bought everything, including the lab stuff, and it just fell flat. I was SO sure it would be a hit, but even DH, a science-y guy, was like "this stuff is dulllll". For this age, I think in particular, I wanted something more exciting, more inviting, less textbook-y. Wait, maybe I just talked myself out of CK12. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
Wildiris
If CPO was dull, what did your DH think of the CK-12 science. Dull is not good, but textbook is not bad route if it is engaging. I am concerned about screen time. I just jumped off the K12 boat because of the screen time.

I am concerned about screen time. I just jumped off the K12 boat because of the screen time. He hasnt looked at it, but he'd probably think it was dull for the age. Funnily enough, we were thinking about using K12 science next year. But I am thinking that if I use living books, a bit of CK12 (picking through for the fun(ner) stuff) and Science Bits (we're using the trial now, and we like it) we might be okay. I just have to do some tweaking (me? tweak? nooooooo)
DragonFaerie
What about Connect the Thoughts? I am planning on using this for DD, but we haven't started yet. Looks like a different approach to science.

Will let you know. Thanks!!!

Wildiris
What a deal on Science Bits. We signed up for a free trial. One online resource is better than 6 or 7.
Halcyon
What a deal on Science Bits. We signed up for a free trial. One online resource is better than 6 or 7. We've only done some of the Physics Virtual Experiment, but DS liked them and they required him to THINK. I was impressed. We are going to continue to fool around with it this week, but I think it's a great addition to his science. We will probably mix and match and use a bunch of the resources there. Halcyon
Here's a list of Science Bits' lessons and goals, which was a bit hard to find (and would be useful when constructing a syllabus). https://s3.amazonaws.com/hsbc_image/images/stories/s3/bcuw7wzkz_r957_f6.pdf

Irishmommy
I wanted CPO to work too as I had heard so many good things about it, but it was a bust here!
