northcoast
How long do you allow for the BJU homeschool chem labs, 3rd edition? We just finished the homeschool lab 2B. It took almost 2 hrs, some because we did play around with the dry ice. But still.....a lab report needs done. We are also doing MFW Ancients. School in general is taking a lot longer....But mainly what is reasonable time for chem labs?
Mom22ns
I haven't done BJU Chem labs, but I scheduled all Chem labs here for 2 hours. Most ran over. That didn't include any time for their write ups.
northcoast
I was figuring on one hour, like what a high school class would be. Guess I need to adapt. :)
Luckymama
I was figuring on one hour, like what a high school class would be. Guess I need to adapt. :) My two older kids attended two different private high schools. At each, their lab were double periods, so 88 or 100 minutes. nousername
I almost would schedule 3 hours, some of those labs seem time intensive. Setup and what have you. I have the lab manual, haven't used it yet. Being that experiments aren't everyday I was thinking of maybe doing them on a Saturday during an uninterrupted block of time. It may alter the flow and be done a little behind when the lecture part took place. Many high schools don't do hands on labs anymore. They watch a video. I did just check a few area high schools and they have 1.5 hour periods for classes.
Julie of KY
Most of the BJU labs can be done in 1 1/2 - 2 hours (not including set up and cleanup).

OK, I don't feel so out of line thinking of penciling in 3, as this would include the setup and cleanup time. Water always takes longer to boil when you are staring at it...lol
northcoast
Yes, a watched pot doesn't boil. :) Thanks for all the helpful replies. I didn't realize that many schools opt for a video rather than labs. I loved chem lab while in high school! Maybe I am remembering incorrectly that it was held in the normal 1 hr period....Thanks again!
PeterPan
You can do what you want obviously, but I don't think BJU specifies doing lab write-ups for all the labs, only a few. If it were AP, sure I'd have them doing it.
