100EL...is the writing component necessary?

Recommended Posts

No, that's the way I've done it with all my kids. Oldest dd learned to read at 3, when she was definitely not ready to write. Dd5 is learning to read now, after she already taught herself to write, so we skip the writing part. Ds3 is learning now without the writing part. He already figured out how to write his name, and he's going to a private pre-K this year where they'll cover writing the alphabet and numbers thoroughly.

I assume you mean Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons?  (I thought it was abbreviated 100EZ!)  I have made notecards with the letters that I'm having my son trace when prompted by the lesson.  I usually show him where to start and correct him if he traces really wrong, but it doesn't require the fine motor skills of actually writing.  That's worked pretty well for us!
