Between the level of Alcott and Austen. 2 favorites, Alcott is enjoyable but Austen requires work.

Faves when younger:

Maud Hart Lovelace

Elizabeth George Speare

Enright, Melendys etc.

I thought of Bess Streeter Aldrich

Gene Stratton Porter, at least Limberlost

She is kind of sick to death of Ancient and MA historical fiction, but looking at her favorite authors, can you think of age apprpriate, quality and fun summer reads?

Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce books would be fun.

My Dd loves these! She also really enjoys Agatha Christie with Tommy and Tuppence being her favorite detectives.

She recently read P.D. Jame's sequel to P&P "Death Comes to Pemberly" and really enjoyed it.

One last idea are Mary Stewart books. Dd just finished "Moonspinners" which is a romantic mystery set in Crete in the 60's. Great pleasure reading. We have the Merlin series by her also but have not started on them yet.

Has she read Anne of Green Gables yet? Lucy Maud Montgomery

All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor (easy read)

Cherry Ames books by Helen Wells

Frances Hodgson Burnett -- a Little Princess, Secret Garden

The Five Little Peppers by Margaret Sidney

The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall

Madeline L'Engle's books, particularly the series starting with A Wrinkle in Time

** hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson

The Bronte Sisters works, perhaps? Though that is more Austen level

The Wizard of Oz books are fun. And there are quite a few

Margot Peterson Haddix's Shadow Children series

The Hilary McKay Casson Family books starting with Saffy's Angel

I've not ready it but heard good things about Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

E.L. Konigsburg (Yes from the mixed up files of Mrs. Basil E Frankenweiler. But she also has quite a few other books)

Dianna Wynn Jones

Diane Duane

quick fun and easy are the dear canada and dear america diaries.

girls of many lands series is excellent, and at a more difficult level than the american girl books.

from my 14 year old dd are these suggestions:

fantasy and scifi:

percy jackson, harry potter, kane chronicles, the beyonders, alchemist series, rick riordans' series, ranger's apprentice (she says this is one of the best in the list), brother band, the roman mysteries (flavia gemini), any of the star trek novels.

and a favourite over the years, the warrior cats series...

hth,

ann

Georgette Heyer

Jean Webster (esp. Daddy Long-Legs)

A Strong and Willing Girl (Edwards)

Contemporary:

Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett

Tamora Pierce

Stravaganza series by Hoffman

Diana Wynne Jones

Nancy Farmer

the Mennyms series by Waugh might look juvenile, but it transcends its Borrowers-like genre -- imagine having been an almost 15yo for 40 years

Michael Ende (Momo and The Neverending Story)
